A blacksmith's forge near the Bride River in the heart of rural Cork complete with vegetable garden and free range hens - leave the rat race for a day or two and put your feet up, or explore the Rebel County and beautiful West Waterford.
We are 40 minutes northeast of Cork city, between the rivers Bride and Blackwater, in a beautiful recently restored 200 year old stone blacksmith's forge on the edge of an Irish rural village. Our home is fitted with eco technology including geothermal underfloor heating and solar panels, and with two wood burning stoves. We have a very large enclosed back garden complete with separate fruit and vegetable gardens, and hen enclosure with fresh eggs daily.
The double guest bedroom has been newly decorated (travel cot also available), the children's bedroom (when available) will suit up to three children and your bathroom contains a Victorian rolltop bath and shower. The kitchen/dining room is at the heart of the house with sofas and easy chairs around the wood burning stove, and there is also a sitting room with TV and piano. The kitchen opens up on to large south facing patio with table and chairs.
We are 15 minutes walk from our local village, where there is a small grocery store, post office, three pubs, two churches and a cafe. Cork is 40 minutes drive away, and is the second largest city in Ireland, on the south coast. Cork is renowned as the food capital of Ireland, containing the world-famous English market as well as great bars and restaurants. We are a 20 minute drive from Ballymaloe House, home to three generations of famous Irish cooks (all women!). The nearest large town is Fermoy, 15 minutes drive away for larger supermarkets, shops and restaurants. We are 15 minutes drive from the historic and beautiful town of Lismore, with its beautiful castle and gardens.
We have bicycles that you can use whilst here, and everything that you would need for a picnic when you're on a romantic walk or cycle in the area.
If we're away, up to five people can stay here, as up to three singles are available in the second bedroom. Also, we'd welcome couples travelling with a baby/toddler as we have a travel cot that will work perfectly in the double bedroom.
We like to exchange a few messages before we confirm your booking, so we look forward to hearing from you! Typically we need a few day's notice of your visit, but it's still worth asking even if it's last minute and we'll try our best to accommodate you.
No smoking please and no shoes in the house please. Feel free to feed our hens your food scraps (except chicken!) during the daytime but not at night, and help yourself to their eggs the following morning. If you're in their enclosure, please use our garden shoes or wellies and close the gate after you. Thank you for leaving our home as tidy as you found it.
We had nice two days at Carolines home. The room was very comfortable and we enjoyed the breakfast ecpecially the fresh laid eggs from Carolines hens. It´s to bad that we had no time to meet Caroline, Peter and Daniel. This B&B is absolutely recommendable and we would stay there again.
We enjoyed a two-night stay with Caroline, Peter and their little son Daniel. They were great hosts, relaxed and very welcoming. Peter cooked some lovely meals using eggs from their own hens as well as produce from their garden. The bed was very comfortable and they even turned on the electric blanket for us.
Conna may not be on the main tourist trails, but if you look for an authentic rural home with interesting places to explore nearby (lots of info, maps, etc in the room), then this is for you.
Again, thanks for having us and best of luck for 2014!

I had a terrific time staying with Caroline (and Peter and Daniel). The room was super-comfortable and their hospitality exceptional. We had lots to talk about, especially music and theatre; and I really enjoyed playing the piano too. Coming from urban Islington, I was particularly impressed by Peter's vegetable allotment and enjoyed the eggs provided by the chickens. An excellent place to stay.
We had a lovely time with Caroline, Peter and Daniel. They were so welcoming and we felt very comfortable in their home. The food was exceptional! Thank you.
I reserved a room in Conna because it is my ancestors' birthplace. My experience was so very enhanced because of the lovely place and wonderful hosts. The house is a renovated blacksmith's forge full of beautiful antiques from Peter and Caroline's families. Being in a home with an Irish family just approaching a youngster's first grade in school was an event in itself. I loved chatting with them about nearly everything and learning from Peter how to access the ordinance survey land maps online. The food, the gardens, the hens, the cemetery behind the property were all added delights. I WILL return for many reasons!
Such a pleasure to meet someone whose family lived up the road in the 1850s - it truly is a small world, and Kathy was simply a delight to host - generous, kind, a font of information about the place we live in - you could not ask for a nicer guest and we do hope to meet Kathy (on either side of the pond) again!
My husband and I are on our belated honeymoon, my birthday and our one year anniversary trip all combined into one magical 18 day journey through Ireland. It is my first trip to Europe and my husband's first trip to Ireland. We are discovering this beautiful country together and loving every second! Our first stop was Caroline & Peter's lovely home. We arrived late since we were still getting used to the driving and directions in this country, which there are no street addresses! Caroline and Peter served us dinner the first night we stayed there and we talked for hours! We stayed two lovely nights and we could probably talk for hours and hours with Peter & Caroline since we had much in common. It was a great way to kick off our journey through Ireland! Thank you for such a warm welcome! It was also a pleasure to run into Peter in the camera store when in Cork, felt like we belonged in this country! Thanks ever so much!
Thank you Jen & Arnold for being such great guests and hope you are continuing to enjoy the gorgeous weather - you couldn't have picked a nicer time to come to Ireland and it was a pleasure to host you - we'll check out those GPS co-ordinates which sent you around the houses - enjoy the rest of your trip!
We stayed with Caroline, Peter and Daniel for two nights. Upon arrival at their home we immediately felt as though we were part of the family. They had contacted us before our arrival and offered to share their next day's evening meal with us. This was most welcome after a long day on the road. Their home is a lovely restoration and our room was very comfortable. We were offered the use everything their home had to offer. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the charming village of Conna. We have no hesitation in recommending a stay with Caroline, Peter and Daniel.
Loving living in rural Cork with my husband Peter, toddler Daniel and 5 laying hens. We enjoy the good life, but without the hair shirt! We share a keen interest in the arts, food and drink and our family. Whilst almost no public transport in this part of the world unfortunately, there's plenty of parking out front, and good road connections to the rest of Cork, the south west and nearby Waterford, the home of the beautiful crystal.
