Clean and nicely decorated accomandation. Nice bay directly in fornt of the hotel with stunning sunset sea view!
We had a great time staying at the Murray unit. The unit is right on the beach and the beach was much more than we could have expected! We enjoyed swimming and relaxing at the beach, we rented a paddle board from a local rental shop and had a great time with that, and we watched turtles surface on numerous occasions both from the lanai and from the beach. The local people were very friendly, always helpful, and we felt safe. The unit is located on the upper west side of the island and the only drawback to that is the traffic problems at certain times of each day, we quickly learned how to maneuver that and planned our days accordingly. (The info book in the unit gives advice on this)
The accommodations were adequate and clean, but the unit is definitely dated. The hide-a-bed was broken and we were not able to use it, however there was a full size mattress in the closet that we were able to put on the floor for our youngest daughter that accompanied us.
Overall we had a wonderful time and would definitely consider staying here again!!
I believe I mentioned this before ;-) but - wow - the beach!!! If you are looking for a quiet beach vacation this is the place!!! We kept wondering where all the people were!
Unfortunately had a pretty bad experience at this place. We got here at night after a full day of traveling only to find nothing had been cleaned: no clean bed linens, dirty towels on the floor, sand everywhere. Really unpleasant welcome for the first night of our honeymoon. We talked to Rob and it was apparently some sort of miscommunication on his part. Thankfully Rob got some maids to clean it the next day. But there are also cockroaches everywhere, even in the linen closet! Gross... The mattress felt too mushy and cheap (but maybe some people like it that way...). To top things off, 3 days before our checkout, the bathroom light went out. I contacted Rob about it, but there was absolutely no response. So we stayed there for 3 nights without a bathroom light.
The only good thing about this place was the view from the lanai. That is pretty unbeatable. But still would probably recommend staying in another condo unit.
Just got back from a wonderful week in Oahu! Rob and Paula's condo was perfect and was in a truly beautiful, low-key area. We didn't want to be in the heart of the city-we could have stayed home for that-and this condo provided perfectly. We had beautiful sunsets every evening and enjoyed them from the lanai. We walked out to the point and were able to watch dolphins swim and had several turtles surface near shore. When we come back we will definitely be back to Rob and Paula's beach cabana!
There were pros and cons to the condo, but our overall vacation was wonderful. We were informed before check-in that the hide-a bed was broken but that we would have an alternate mattress available for our two kids. Unfortunately, the inflatable mattress had no air pump (no way to inflate it) and there were no other places for the kids to sleep so we set them up on the available furniture in the living area for the first night. Rob was responsive to our call to him on that first night and he had a foam mattress delivered to the unit the next day and compensated us for the first night, which was very appreciated. While the condo was adequate, and well appointed with a fully functioning kitchen, beach toys/equipment, etc. it should be noted that the unit was in need of maintenance. A kitchen drawer was broken, the kitchen sink leaked, and furniture was worn and in some cases broken. We notified the owner and he indicated that the issues would be addressed before the next guests arrived. In spite of the challenges, we LOVED the beach and could not imagine a better view or access to the water. The beach was private, uncrowded, perfect for "boogie boarding" and we saw rays, dolphins, a sea turtle and other wildlife. I can't imagine anywhere else on the island where we could have had such a great beach experience! The beach and water were just feet from the building. Terrific! The neighborhood is not touristy, a bit of a drive from Waikiki, and is rather poor, but we had no trouble. We met friendly people and enjoyed Makaha. We also found a terrific restaurant just up the road from the condo, Coquitos, which served fabulous Latin food. Starbucks and other fast food is available, as well as supermarkets. If you want a great beach/view this would be a good choice, but if you are hoping for an updated unit with nice furnishings, you may want to look further.
We stayed for 5 nights in the condo. The host was quick to respond and made sure we had all the information we needed for a smooth arrival and departure. Don't be deterred by the lack of air-conditioning, for the condo stayed nice and cool with a great cross breeze with the aid of ceiling fans even in hot and muggy July, when we stayed. The condition of the condo was ok. There is definitely some deferred maintenance that needs to be done (broken outdoor furniture, doors sticking, broken drawers, sofa bed was broken-- for our family of 4 this was crucial as the air mattress offered as a replacement was a hassle and in the way in the small living space) but the condo was clean and well appointed. The neighborhood is a poorer area of the island, but we felt safe in the condo and had no issues, only kindness from the local neighbors. There were a couple of grocery stores close by, and it was easy to use the well-stocked kitchen. Though the condo itself was not perfect, the experience was! We would stay here again in a heartbeat! For the price it gave us exactly what we were looking for, an area outside of the tourist hubs with a beautiful, uncrowded, velvety sand beach, and pristine water for boogie-boarding, snorkeling and body surfing. We saw dolphins and sea turtles along with a plethora of tropical fish from the completely private 8th floor balcony. The view at night was just as amazing with stars filling the darkness, and the sound of waves crashing below. It is impossible to get closer to the water without living on the water itself. The beach is the backyard. This may not be the place to stay for people who plan on spending a lot of time indoors or in town, as it was remote ( it took us about an hour from Waikiki and the North Shore.) However, for those who want to be outside enjoying the surf and sand without having someone doing the same within 2 feet of your beach towel, the condo is an amazing getaway!
The instructions to access the accommodations given by Rob and Paula, while brief, were all that were necessary. The suite is very simple, but was well appointed for our needs. The fact that virtually every amenity is in place to ensure the ability to stay comfortably was wonderful. The pluses, including wake boards, snorkel accessories, beach chairs and mats only added to the overall experience. We were looking for a location away from the hub of tourists and Turtle Cove absolutely filled our wish list; right on top of the beach yet far enough away from the crowds that we could enjoy both at our leisure. We discussed whether we would return to Turtle Cove, Makaha Cabanas and our absolute answer was YES! We actually swam with turtles, right there, three feet away from us! And finally the view, never in my wildest dreams did I ever think the view would be better than described.
I am a surfer and lover of the ocean. I have lived in Hawaii off and on for the past 15 years. I lived in this condo for 2 years and loved every minute of it.
I met my wife and we spent the early days of our relationship in that unit, on the beach and in the water. We have been married for 3 years now and we have a growing family.
We return to Makaha as often as possible. Nothing changes. The sunsets are magical, the beach is calming and soothing. The locals still greet you with a big smile and Aloha!
If you are into surfing, diving, snorkeling, or just relaxing under coconut palm with a good book, this place is for you.
