Very spacious private River Suite ALL to yourself in authentic Hawaiian home near the Anahola river. The gentle sound of waves can be heard down the river from your back door. You can walk to the local secluded beach where you can swim, snorkel, boogie board, surf, bask in the sun or take a long walk on the beach. The Anahola beach is less than a mile down the river (3 minute drive or 25 minute walk). We are also walking distance to the local farmer's market every weekend, a convenience store for basic groceries, a Hawaiian shave ice stand and Kauai's best charbroiled hamburgers on the island.
The River Suite is tucked away in a quiet local Hawaiian town for those who want to get away from it all, especially the tourism, and feel like you're in old Hawaii yet perfectly located to see everything on the island. We are halfway between the wetter and more lush north shore (Hanalei Bay and the world-famous Napali Coast) and the dryer south shore which is hotter and sunnier, but more touristy. Here in Anahola, the weather is absolutely perfect – sunny and warm virtually every day with occasional 3-5 minute refreshing tropical rain showers to bring everything to life. You can have the best of both worlds staying here and see ALL of Kauai from one place using our home as your home base and choose which way to go depending on the weather and your interests.
The River Suite features your own private access, private outdoor patio, 1 queen bed (with memory foam mattress!), 1 queen futon couch (with memory foam mattress topper!), and 1 private bathroom with lava rocks and stone bathtub in bright bathroom flooded with natural sunlight streaming in. The River Suite includes private parking, free high speed Internet, full kitchenette with 2 burner cooktop, toaster oven (no oven), full size refrigerator, blender, coffee maker, full set of pots, pans and dishware, outdoor BBQ for grilling, boogie boards, snorkel gear (masks, fins, snorkels), beach mats and umbrellas, beach towels, beach chairs and coolers ALL included at no additional charge so you don’t have to rent, buy or pack these items for your trip. Washer & Dryer available on the premises at $5 each per load (due to the very high cost of electricity in Hawaii). Hang drying clothes on clothes line encouraged to save energy and money on dryer fees :-)
The River Suite is close enough to the beach that you can hear the gentle sound of waves in the background at night. Smell the fragrance of Plumerias (a favorite in leis), night blooming jasmines and gardenias that fill the air. Listen to the birds sing and coo all day long. Chickens with their baby chicks and scuttle through the yard looking for worms. Palm fronds and banana leaves flutter in the tropical breeze and dance in the rain. Banana trees burst with inflorescence producing an abundance of bananas. Coconuts drop daily so watch your head – if you’ve never had fresh coconut water, you’re in for a treat. Exotic birds of paradise mingle with the Papayas. My playful cats will entertain you and make you laugh. They are bursting with joy living in paradise and can’t help but show it. I feel the same way! I am fortunate to have found Airbnb to let other cool people know about my place with whom I can share a slice of paradise with. In every case without exception, everyone has one or more of the following experiences here: fun-filled, joyful, restful, peaceful, magical, memorable, spiritual, uplifting, life-inspiring and sometimes all of the above (especially if you sign up for one of our Epic Excursions (described in greater detail below) created just for our guests and those lucky enough to find us).
Epic Excursions: If you want to experience the most magical and beautiful parts of Kauai not open to the public or found in the guidebooks, please let me know. While living on Kauai and spending quality time with local Hawaiians, I have been shown the most pristine and beautiful parts of Kauai, places most residents living on Kauai still haven't seen. I can arrange for you to be guided to the most surreal places with by far the best scenic views of the island (Top of the World), or experience the magnificent power of the largest waterfall on Kauai by literally being taken inside and behind the waterfall (Waterfall Shower) or a day exploring Secret Caves and Coves frequented by turtles and dolphins, or rock hop up a river and hike through a green lush valley to the base of another stunning waterfall (Makaleha). These excursions vary in price depending on the number of guests and are not offered by anyone else. These are our discoveries and are only offered to our guests (or those lucky enough to find us). It’s very important to check available right away to plan this during your stay on Kauai around the weather and our schedules. Please inquire if this interests you.
I live next door and know the island well, so I'm an excellent resource for choosing what's best to do on your island vacation, including where the best hikes are located, best snorkeling spots, where the dolphins and turtles swim (including their caves), and where are the best secluded beaches, etc.
My partner is Swiss so we can assist you in three languages: English, German or French.
The only way Airbnb lets you inquire and write to me is to first find available dates in my calendar first (even if you have to make them up). I highly recommend that you check for yourself by clicking on the "Calendar" Tab above the photos. If it's already booked for your dates, please check the calendars on my other listings which are adjacent to each other on the same property (see bottom right hand corner of this webpage for the other listings).
FACTOID: Did you know that when the Dalai Lama of Tibet came to the Hawaiian Islands in 1994, he asked to see only two places. Both requests were on Kauai and surprisingly he did not even ask to see the world-famous Napali Coast on Kauai. Instead, he asked to see Anahola and Polihale. When his surprised hosts asked why, he said "We [the spiritual leaders of Tibet] know Anahola is a portal where the souls or spirits enter this world and Polihale is where the souls or spirits exit this world." So there you have it, Anahola recommended by none other than the Dalai Lama himself. This is more than just a legend. There is a sacred pyramid shaped mountain peak in the backdrop of our home. In recent times this pyramid was filmed in the movie King Kong, but it's importance to Hawaiian history and culture is of much greater importance. There is a sacred birthing temple thousands of years old at the base of that mountain which is still guarded today by a living Kuhuna (Hawaiian priest of royal decent). Anahola is one of the most protected places on Kauai by the Hawaiians hence why there is very little tourism here and its the only town on this side of the island where portions are reserved exclusively for Hawaiians. Our home is one of the few in this Hawaiian village that is allowed to be owned and occupied by non-Hawaiians. We hope that you enjoy this unique opportunity to stay in a Hawaiian village far away from tourism yet conveniently located to see everything on the island from our home-base.
P.S. I have a 3 night minimum on all my units, unless there's only 2 nights open between bookings, then I will consider making an exception.
DO YOU NEED A RENTAL CAR? Often I get asked if a car is necessary on Kauai. Unequivocally, the answer is YES, unless you don't mind missing out on 80% of the best sights on the island. All the sights worth seeing are spread out across the island and the local bus and hitch-hiking cannot get you to most of these sights. The next most common question is about discount car rentals. Without exaggerating 70% of discount car rentals are unreliable and have problems so you are likely to play car rally for your first few days and that's assuming they have another 'running' car to offer you. The best car rental choices are the national brands, e.g. Enterprise, Thrifty, Avis, Hertz, Dollar, etc.

Very nice studio, very well equipped and decorated with taste, and the bathtub is really amazing! Sean gave us some really good advice on what coud be done with a 4 year old child, and also lent us a guidebook full of good advices! I woud definitely recommand this place, quiet and away from more touristy places, exactly what we were expecting.
My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon, and the place was perfect!
The place is very romantic, as it is surrounded by a lush garden, close to the beach, and has a beautiful outdoor bath (which I think used almost every night)!
Sean was very friendly and accommodating as well. If you can, I would definitely recommend taking her private tour to the Nepali coastline... that view will stay in our hearts for a long time!
This place is paradise. Sean's BnB is perfect if you want to feel like a local on this beautiful island. Sean provided us excellent directions from the airport. You are tucked away from the touristy hotels and condos, which is exactly what we wanted. Sean warmly greeted us when we arrived and gave us some nice recommendations. The BnB is also right next to Ono Charburger which I highly recommend. If you go, ask for a side of teriyaki mayo.
Anyway, Sean's BnB is perfectly located on the island so you can get to the North Shore and South Shore very easily. The BnB was clean, organized, and has the best stone tub/shower I have ever seen or bathed in. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it with all my heart. Aloha!
It was really nice at Seans place. We got a lot of good tips, where to go, and you have to do the "Top of the World" hike, it is awsome!
Thank you Sean for the great time!
An amazing, peaceful, quiet place that feels like home right away. My wife and I were here for our honeymoon and LOVED it. Sean is a fantastic host - a gentle, sweet soul. If you are looking for serene, off-the-beaten-path, beauty, this is the place. Spacious and super comfortable, it's also centrally located so it's super easy to access other parts of the island. The "top of the world hike" will blow your mind and feed your soul.
Thank you Beverly and Shari for your deep appreciation and for your spirit. You both really shined and I enjoyed your energy so much. Excellent review that captures the features and essence of the River Suite. Happy to hear "Top of the World" blew your mind and fed your soul. This is a once in a life-time experience exclusively for our guests.
Our stay with Sean was more than we could've ever expected. Sean received us with open arms upon our arrival. She gave us tips on restaurants and sites to visit, and even where NOT to go. The grounds the river house lay made us feel at home. Why? Because we were immersed in all that Kauai has to offer. The amenities included are priceless. For example, the birds that chirp, the lush green gardens, the rustic feel of the decor, but most of all the wonderful host Sean.
The best part of our trip however was our "Top of the World" hike. Please don't deprive yourself of this. I promise you will miss out on really connecting with the island. It is SUREAL!
Thank you Sean for such an amazing 4 days.
Jenny and Massimo
Our stay was fantastic! Sean was very helpful in directing us to a wonderful place to snorkel where the kids swam with turtles and to a great hike.
We had a great stay! The apartment was clean, quaint, and had everything we needed for a short and simple stay. The outdoor stone shower is awesome, and we liked how quiet and private the property was. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others, thanks Sean!
We had an amazing week long stay here and can't wait to come back again! Perfect little mellow rustic island hideaway- between Kapaa and Hanalei with a neighborhood beach just down the road. We stayed in the river suite downstairs from the main guest house and made great use of the bbq as well as the giant tub- so awesome to take a soak in the tub after a long hike and listen to the birds and the rainfall, so relaxing! I'm in love with the bathroom's open tub / shower area- yurt-like with screening and bamboo- you feel like you're bathing in a jungle pool! Everything we needed was available to us there and we made a ton of great meals in the kitchen- so great to have while you're on a long stay. Sean is awesome- we love her!! She shared a couple of her favorite spots on the island as well as hooked us up with a local guide and a couple of the other guests from upstairs for an incredible off-map hike that was truly an amazing experience. Our guide Danny - the cacao mousse master- is such a special person and we are so happy we got to spend a day with him- plus we made new friends who we spent more time with during our trip. Can't wait to come stay again!
Sean was a very good host with plenty of beach gear and local information that we used throughout our stay. We made use the kitchen and we're very happy to have a full fridge and the grill as we were able to make most of our meals during the stay. Very spacious apartment and really liked the pseudo-outside shower.
