About this listing

The space

We offer budget travel accommodation with a tropical touch. A comfortable hotel full sized mattress with clean linens and a hot shower awaits the traveler here at our 'Sugar Shack.' We have a great wi-fi signal in The Sugar Shack and the home is cleaned in readiness for each new guest. We also set out fresh flowers for our guests to enjoy. You will love being in the same block as some great budget restaurants, two supermarkets and the Hilo Farmer's Market. Travelers who wish to do without a car can easily find what they need in our neighborhood.

NOTE: 13.466% TAX IS TO BE COLLECTED ON ARRIVAL. Payment can be via (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) or cash.

You will love our bright colors and our wild jungle garden and you will be charmed by this old timber home. There is an open and light feeling to the home with old style sash windows, views to the garden and a bright yellow wall that gives the home warmth and a tropical feel. This house has been refurbished with bamboo flooring and a tiled kitchen and bathroom which you will share with one or two other guests from the other room in the house. The kitchen contains the basic utensils, appliances and condiments for simple cooking and for preparing tea and coffee. Our tiled bathroom features a shower, bathtub and toilet on the ground floor level.

Our garden features tropical flowers, trees and statues. It is walled on all sides giving it a very private and secluded feeling like one could be a world away. The appeal for our guests is that while they can enjoy the peace and quiet of our garden setting, they can step onto the streets of Hilo and find great places to eat, shop or browse..

We have enjoyed creating a place for people to rest. We love to help travelers enjoy their visit to Hilo and always encourage them to stay and see a little of this quaint old town. This is a town for people wanting to stay away from 'The Mall.' It's a town with plenty of small stores to browse in and some very affordable restaurants serving delicious food with all kinds of ethnic flavors. Being downtown is very convenient. You can enjoy a vacation without very much time in a car. There is a supermarket right across the road and you will be a block from the farmer's market where you will find great fresh fruit and produce, flowers and snacks. There are galleries, museums and parks to visit that are a short walk away. For the budget or adventure minded traveler there is an irregular but very inexpensive bus that will take you beaches around the island. You can also borrow a bike from us and ride to the beach and the bus stop is one block away. For those with a rental car, there are snorkeling beaches and surf beaches as close as 10 minutes drive away.

This is a very clean, cozy and charming cottage with tropical garden and water ponds. It is conveniently located in the center of Hilo with walking distance to restaurants, cafes, shops and the Farmer's Market. Jasper is a great host and friendly guy. He gave us some flexibilities for our check-in and check-out time and made our stay very comfortable. We will definitely recommend to our friends and will stay again next time.

This is a very unique house painted in bright colors in the city close to everything. There was privacy although the next house was quite close. A kitchen is there as well (and a large table) and thats good use of since breakfast is not included (Owner said that Airbnbs in Hawaii usually do not include breakfast). Used the washer and dryer there but it seems that this is not usually allowed. The bed in the room on the ground floor was a bit small for tall people.

Response from Megan:
Chritopher it appears your a bit new to Airbnb, because the name of the company implies there is breakfast, it is a name not a condition of sale, there is clearly marked box if breakfast will be provided, Best to read room description clearly stated what the bed size is in each of our accommodations, we provide rooms with larger a beds, it is your choice, i did inform you that a laundrymat is a stones throw away, yet did grant you permission to use ours. Please Christopher do your home work read the hosts description of your accommodation before you book it,

Don't even hesitate booking with Megan and Jasper. Seriously. The home is very clean and they give you everything you need for a comfortable stay. The owners have also worked hard to give their guests a restorative and peaceful environment just steps away from the town center. Book a stay with these guys if you want a home with Om. I can't wait to come back here - thanks again M & J!

The sugar shack was a great spot for my sister and I's vacation. Beautiful area, centrally located. The house itself was colorful and unique. The vibe was very relaxed and laid back, which was exactly what we were looking for. We highly recommend!

Aloha I'm Megan. Meet Jasper also. We've been working to create a colorful atmosphere for visitors that reflects the beauty of the tropics. Both of us enjoy helping guests feel comfortable so that they can relax and enjoy all the magic of this wet and wild side of the island.

Hilo could become known as 'the town that time forgot' because it has the flavor of an older, slower Hawaii. In that way we are pretty easy going and relaxed ourselves. We have two guest cottages and a romantic 1 bedroom apartment here at The Lotus Garden. This is a property that features two garden courtyards, stone Buddha statues, a fish pond and an abundance of tropical plants and trees. . The Lotus Garden is reminiscent of the former 'sugar cane plantation days' when houses were clustered together so that there was a sense of community in the way people lived. Here Travelers meet other travelers in passing. Another wonderful feature of The Lotus Garden is that we are right in the center of town. Guests enjoy being a block away from the Farmer's Market and within walking distance of our cafes, restaurants, galleries and even Hilo's own Kava Bar.

Just ask us. .. we know some great little beach parks close by and some special things to do around Hilo..

... Our latest creed to live by? "Now is a really good time!" And so it is..
