You will love our bright colors and our wild jungle garden and you will be charmed by this old timber home. There is an open and light feeling to the home with old style sash windows, views to the garden and a bright yellow wall that gives the home warmth and a tropical feel. This house has been refurbished with bamboo flooring and a tiled kitchen and bathroom which you will share with one or two other guests from the other room in the house. The kitchen contains the basic utensils, appliances and condiments for simple cooking and for preparing tea and coffee. Our tiled bathroom features a shower, bathtub and toilet on the ground floor level.
Our garden features tropical flowers, trees and statues. It is walled on all sides giving it a very private and secluded feeling like one could be a world away. The appeal for our guests is that while they can enjoy the peace and quiet of our garden setting, they can step onto the streets of Hilo and find great places to eat, shop or browse..
We have enjoyed creating a place for people to rest. We love to help travelers enjoy their visit to Hilo and always encourage them to stay and see a little of this quaint old town. This is a town for people wanting to stay away from 'The Mall.' It's a town with plenty of small stores to browse in and some very affordable restaurants serving delicious food with all kinds of ethnic flavors. Being downtown is very convenient. You can enjoy a vacation without very much time in a car. There is a supermarket right across the road and you will be a block from the farmer's market where you will find great fresh fruit and produce, flowers and snacks. There are galleries, museums and parks to visit that are a short walk away. For the budget or adventure minded traveler there is an irregular but very inexpensive bus that will take you beaches around the island. You can also borrow a bike from us and ride to the beach and the bus stop is one block away. For those with a rental car, there are snorkeling beaches and surf beaches as close as 10 minutes drive away.

Hawaiian homes usually are 'no shoe homes' and this applies here. Noise should be at a minimum after 10pm. No 'extra guests' are welcome without checking with us first. Please sort your recycling from your trash and leave the place tidy when you check out to avoid extra hassles or fees. We try to cultivate a relaxed and friendly atmosphere so we aren't too big on rules but those are just a few that pass for 'common sense' around here. Thank you for taking the time to read this. We hope you have a great stay in Hilo.
The Sweet Room in on the ground floor level and offers a Hotel sized double bed and views of the garden.
Megan is a very friendly and welcoming host. The Sugar Shack was every bit as charming in person as it is in the photos and description, plus a sweet little kitty who never came into the house but greeted us at the front porch each time we came home. Pineapples was a great landmark for finding this place and I also highly recommend them for dinner. They mix a perfect Margarita.
Just got back from Hilo and must say that Megan and Jasper's place is a dream! I stayed in the Sweet Room in the Sugar Shack house... It was absolutely magical! The place looks just like the pictures posted! You can go grocery shopping across the street at KTA market. I didn't rent a car so I walked everywhere in Hilo... Had coffee at Shark's down the street, went to Farmer's market everyday for fresh foods and went shopping too! Wonderful and perfect hosts and peaceful environment. I will always stay here if I am in Hilo. Mahalo nui for creating such a magical environment Megan and Jasper!
Megan's place in Hilo was the best! It was so well put together and so close to everything downtown- we loved it! Would definitely stay again!
The Sugar Shack was a great spot for my weekend trip to the Big Island - an easy drive to Volcanoes National Park, as well as convenient to jump on the road and drive up the Hamakua Coast. Megan was a great host and was always available for any questions that I had. I hope to make it back to the Big Island soon - and will be sure to choose one of Megan's properties again!
Thank you Megan and Jasper,
The Sugar Shack was as advertised. Great location in Hilo, very accommodating and terrific suggestions for local excursions. Really enjoyed, "first Friday" in Hilo and would stay again. Thanks again!

Beautiful hostess Megan, her candy or sweet hut hut, not a cottage, but not a small one yard, elements from the courtyard to every corner of the yard is full of China and Southeast Asia, so I feel a thousand miles other than cordial. The band lived in a hospital room, the door of the small courtyard, the house also vanity plants and flowers decorated the bathroom, people feel the owner very carefully, both intimate and practical layout, towels, paper towels, ceiling fans, sofa, the house is also equipped with cooking corner coffee table and a small wash sink, coffee cups and cutlery sugar neatly stacked very clean, especially the practical, we at the farmers market to buy the papaya avocado is in this process of to get on the small courtyard to enjoy coffee table, watching the raindrops crackling hit the transparent roof, too comfortable, really make people feel warm, it should be the result of a couple well-kept Megan gave us plus a folding bed 2 nights receive 10 knives feeling pretty fair. Unfortunately, only I lived in Hilo 2 nights, and from morning to evening every day, one day the stars, one day see the volcano, did not enjoy everything here. Megan easy to find here, I was under GPS guidance from Kona directly to the open door of the court, but the hostess very long on the guiding text can not. Car can be parked in the courtyard in front of the street, day 2 hours, 6:00 am to 8:00 am Any long parking are free, that is to say just stop from 16:00 to 10:00 in the morning without spending a penny, parking came back late enough not to worry no place to come back from Mauna Kea 10 o'clock, roadside stopped one car. Megan's yard on the other side there is a side door, usually locked, I told her to come back later, she told me to go side-door with a key, really very close, do not worry about coming home to influence others. Megan out of the hospital is a crossroads, opposite the angle bar restaurant, tried large taste okay, more than 10 points pretty lively. Intersection of diagonal is home big supermarket. Ipsilateral front row is a farmer's market, we ate two days of avocado, papaya is here on the goods, fruits and vegetables, macadamia nuts and coffee memorabilia everything, the most eastern side of the head of the family and his son opened the Chinese water stalls. Out of the market across the street is the beach, and can not play in the water and waves, the coast of the south is a park, there is a pier. In short live here too convenient access from the airport, say 15 minutes. The first time with so many words written evaluation just want to be worthy of Megan detailed guiding text for each guest, and I want to thank Megan for a free room upgrade and a warm embrace, and my English is not good, either, and should be very interesting exchange Megan couple They are passionate happy, my mom and I write from their excited expression on the face can feel before we go just left Beijing guests may feel. Thanks also to the printing of Megan mention car voucher. In conclusion, I would like to see this text, the choice Hilo accommodation hesitant helpful to you, if necessary telephone (phone number hidden)
Megan and Jasper were fabulous hosts and kept in communication with us during the whole process. They provided excellent directions to their place, provided heaps of great places to eat, and overall showed us the true meaning of aloha. The room itself was ideal; super clean, lovely and airy, and great cooking and lounging facilities within the house. Would highly recommend this listing.

About the Host, Megan
Aloha I'm Megan. Meet Jasper also. We've been working to create a colorful atmosphere for visitors that reflects the beauty of the tropics. Both of us enjoy helping guests feel comfortable so that they can relax and enjoy all the magic of this wet and wild side of the island.
Hilo could become known as 'the town that time forgot' because it has the flavor of an older, slower Hawaii. In that way we are pretty easy going and relaxed ourselves. We have two guest cottages and a romantic 1 bedroom apartment here at The Lotus Garden. This is a property that features two garden courtyards, stone Buddha statues, a fish pond and an abundance of tropical plants and trees. . The Lotus Garden is reminiscent of the former 'sugar cane plantation days' when houses were clustered together so that there was a sense of community in the way people lived. Here Travelers meet other travelers in passing. Another wonderful feature of The Lotus Garden is that we are right in the center of town. Guests enjoy being a block away from the Farmer's Market and within walking distance of our cafes, restaurants, galleries and even Hilo's own Kava Bar.
Just ask us. .. we know some great little beach parks close by and some special things to do around Hilo..
... Our latest creed to live by? "Now is a really good time!" And so it is..
