You will love our bright colors and our wild jungle garden and you will be charmed by this old timber home. There is an open and light feeling to the home with old style sash windows, views to the garden and a bright yellow wall that gives the home warmth and a tropical feel. This house has been refurbished with bamboo flooring and a tiled kitchen and bathroom which you will share with one or two other guests from the other room in the house. The kitchen contains the basic utensils, appliances and condiments for simple cooking and for preparing tea and coffee. Our tiled bathroom features a shower, bathtub and toilet on the ground floor level.
Our garden features tropical flowers, trees and statues. It is walled on all sides giving it a very private and secluded feeling like one could be a world away. The appeal for our guests is that while they can enjoy the peace and quiet of our garden setting, they can step onto the streets of Hilo and find great places to eat, shop or browse..
We have enjoyed creating a place for people to rest. We love to help travelers enjoy their visit to Hilo and always encourage them to stay and see a little of this quaint old town. This is a town for people wanting to stay away from 'The Mall.' It's a town with plenty of small stores to browse in and some very affordable restaurants serving delicious food with all kinds of ethnic flavors. Being downtown is very convenient. You can enjoy a vacation without very much time in a car. There is a supermarket right across the road and you will be a block from the farmer's market where you will find great fresh fruit and produce, flowers and snacks. There are galleries, museums and parks to visit that are a short walk away. For the budget or adventure minded traveler there is an irregular but very inexpensive bus that will take you beaches around the island. You can also borrow a bike from us and ride to the beach and the bus stop is one block away. For those with a rental car, there are snorkeling beaches and surf beaches as close as 10 minutes drive away.

Hawaiian homes usually are 'no shoe homes' and this applies here. Noise should be at a minimum after 10pm. No 'extra guests' are welcome without checking with us first. Please sort your recycling from your trash and leave the place tidy when you check out to avoid extra hassles or fees. We try to cultivate a relaxed and friendly atmosphere so we aren't too big on rules but those are just a few that pass for 'common sense' around here. Thank you for taking the time to read this. We hope you have a great stay in Hilo.
Megan and Jasper were fabulous hosts and kept in communication with us during the whole process. They provided excellent directions to their place, provided heaps of great places to eat, and overall showed us the true meaning of aloha. The room itself was ideal; super clean, lovely and airy, and great cooking and lounging facilities within the house. Would highly recommend this listing.
We had a perfect, but all too short stay at the Sugar Shack. What a great little building with an interesting history. The location really couldn't be better with the Farmers Market, restaurants, and shops all so close. The place itself is in a building on a tranquil courtyard that lets you forget you're in town at all. Megan and Jasper were great and though we didn't need for anything, they were always just a shout away. The house is fully stocked to make meals in and everything is very clean and well organized. Definitely staying with them again the next time we are in Hilo.
Megan and Jasper were awesome hosts - absolute pleasure to chat with and extremely nice to us during the stay. Loved the place, loved the location, would definitely recommend!
A perfectly located house centrally perched in Hilo, we had a comfortable nights stay here. The hosts were extremely easy going and a pleasure to chat with, knowledgeable about Hilo itself and I would stay here again if passing through for an overnighter:)
This is a great Sugar Shack house has a character and decor (orchids galore) that will make you smile and put you at ease! The location is perfect - right in restaurant district of Hilo. Hilo is such a cool little town! We were safe and comfy and only heard the birds and the frogs as well fell asleep right in the heart of the city! Megan is warm and attentive, but no too much :-). We ate at Kanpai and I highly recommend it!
We stayed two nights at Megans colourful and clean place.
Megan is very nice and helpful.
The location is downton Hilo, so it's near to everything you need.
Megan was very kindly, but the room was very noisy.
Taxes are not included in the airbnb-price.
Aloha to this guest and thank you for this feedback. We are located 'downtown.' Most of the time we enjoy quiet nights but sometimes there is noise from the street.Because the guest didn't choose to communicate very much with us directly we don't know what noise was disturbing to her.
Tax is payable to us directly. This is an agreement we have with airbnb and we have tried to post it clearly in our listings to avoid any disappointment or surprise.

Aloha I'm Megan. Meet Jasper also. We've been working to create a colorful atmosphere for visitors that reflects the beauty of the tropics. Both of us enjoy helping guests feel comfortable so that they can relax and enjoy all the magic of this wet and wild side of the island.
Hilo could become known as 'the town that time forgot' because it has the flavor of an older, slower Hawaii. In that way we are pretty easy going and relaxed ourselves. We have two guest cottages and a romantic 1 bedroom apartment here at The Lotus Garden. This is a property that features two garden courtyards, stone Buddha statues, a fish pond and an abundance of tropical plants and trees. . The Lotus Garden is reminiscent of the former 'sugar cane plantation days' when houses were clustered together so that there was a sense of community in the way people lived. Here Travelers meet other travelers in passing. Another wonderful feature of The Lotus Garden is that we are right in the center of town. Guests enjoy being a block away from the Farmer's Market and within walking distance of our cafes, restaurants, galleries and even Hilo's own Kava Bar.
Just ask us. .. we know some great little beach parks close by and some special things to do around Hilo..
... Our latest creed to live by? "Now is a really good time!" And so it is..
