The Space

We offer budget travel accommodation with a tropical touch. A comfortable hotel full sized mattress with clean linens and a hot shower awaits the traveler here at our 'Sugar Shack.' We have a great wi-fi signal in The Sugar Shack and the home is cleaned in readiness for each new guest. We also set out fresh flowers for our guests to enjoy. You will love being in the same block as some great budget restaurants, two supermarkets and the Hilo Farmer's Market. Travelers who wish to do without a car can easily find what they need in our neighborhood.

You will love our bright colors and our wild jungle garden and you will be charmed by this old timber home. There is an open and light feeling to the home with old style sash windows, views to the garden and a bright yellow wall that gives the home warmth and a tropical feel. This house has been refurbished with bamboo flooring and a tiled kitchen and bathroom which you will share with one or two other guests from the other room in the house. The kitchen contains the basic utensils, appliances and condiments for simple cooking and for preparing tea and coffee. Our tiled bathroom features a shower, bathtub and toilet on the ground floor level.

Our garden features tropical flowers, trees and statues. It is walled on all sides giving it a very private and secluded feeling like one could be a world away. The appeal for our guests is that while they can enjoy the peace and quiet of our garden setting, they can step onto the streets of Hilo and find great places to eat, shop or browse..

We have enjoyed creating a place for people to rest. We love to help travelers enjoy their visit to Hilo and always encourage them to stay and see a little of this quaint old town. This is a town for people wanting to stay away from 'The Mall.' It's a town with plenty of small stores to browse in and some very affordable restaurants serving delicious food with all kinds of ethnic flavors. Being downtown is very convenient. You can enjoy a vacation without very much time in a car. There is a supermarket right across the road and you will be a block from the farmer's market where you will find great fresh fruit and produce, flowers and snacks. There are galleries, museums and parks to visit that are a short walk away. For the budget or adventure minded traveler there is an irregular but very inexpensive bus that will take you beaches around the island. You can also borrow a bike from us and ride to the beach and the bus stop is one block away. For those with a rental car, there are snorkeling beaches and surf beaches as close as 10 minutes drive away.

  • We chose to stay in Hilo one night during our week stay on the big island. Megan was very nice, the accommodations were perfect for what we needed and our housemates were also very friendly. Megan recommended the restaurant across the street called "Pineapples" for dinner and live music, and it was great! Definitely recommend checking out the botanical garden off the old scenic highway just North of Hilo as well as Akaka falls. Great experience.

  • Really lovely place, located right in downtown Hilo, within walking distance of a lot of businesses and restaurants. The property itself has a funky Bohemian/Buddhist vibe, which works quite well in this corner of Hawaii. Megan was very friendly and easy to work with before and after checking in.

  • Megan and Jasper were great hosts and made us feel so welcome. We felt immediately comfortable. Great to hear how they landed in Hilo, also about the history - very colourful - of the neighbourhood. This was a perfect spot to explore the Big Island from, and to explore downtown Hilo, including a farmers market.

  • Convenient to everything in Hilo. We had great neighbors and an amazing time at waterfalls nearby. Also check out Kathmandu trading company which has unreal Tibetan imports.

  • Megan was a fantastic host. She has a real aesthetic eye. I loved the space and the location! Sugar shack felt like a sanctuary amidst the hustle and bustle. Fresh avocado from their tree, and lots of tips on things to see and do. I highly recommend this one!

  • The guest house was beautiful. The entire house is painted in bright colors which makes it lively and difficult to miss. The house is surrounded by greenery on all sides and during evening Megan lights up the place with earthen lamps. The rooms are spacious and clean. She provides you with a set of towels. We enjoyed it more because we have the entire house to ourselves. The house had two rooms and the other room was unoccupied.
Megan is very gracious host. Upon arrival she helped us with the area around and told us about the spots worth visiting in Hilo. It was very informative because locals know about the area and the information is accurate. The house is located in the heart of downtown Hilo and restaurants, farmers market are all walking distance. Great place!! If I visit Hilo again I would definitely like to stay here again.

  • Megan's place in downtown Hilo is among the best AirBNB accommodations we've ever had. It's colorful and clean, and located right in the middle of town among restaurants, coffee shops, and a farmer's market. Megan is a great host and helped us find a nice tea room to catch up on correspondence (and drink great tea!).

Hilo was the perfect location for a relaxed escape. Megan's hospitality was outstanding; providing recommendations and always making sure I was happy. Thank you!!
    Will definitely stay here again!!!

Aloha I'm Megan. Meet Jasper also. We've been working to create a colorful atmosphere for visitors that reflects the beauty of the tropics. Both of us enjoy helping guests feel comfortable so that they can relax and enjoy all the magic of this wet and wild side of the island. Hilo could become known as 'the town that time forgot' because it has the flavor of an older, slower Hawaii. In that way we are pretty easy going and relaxed ourselves. We have two guest cottages and a romantic 1 bedroom apartment here at The Lotus Garden. This is a property that features two garden courtyards, stone Buddha statues, a fish pond and an abundance of tropical plants and trees. . The Lotus Garden is reminiscent of the former 'sugar cane plantation days' when houses were clustered together so that there was a sense of community in the way people lived. Here Travelers meet other travelers in passing. Another wonderful feature of The Lotus Garden is that we are right in the center of town. Guests enjoy being a block away from the Farmer's Market and within walking distance of our cafes, restaurants, galleries and even Hilo's own Kava Bar. Just ask us. .. we know some great little beach parks close by and some special things to do around Hilo.. ... Our latest creed to live by? "Now is a really good time!" And so it is..
