Interaction with Guests
We try to assist guests who may have questions or want advice about places to eat, sites to see. It is up to our guests how much interaction they wish to have with us as hosts.
Hilo has a 'retro vibe' that is charming to many who come here. Hilo has a more than average number of artists & creatives.
There is a fusion of cultures and cuisines which make for some interesting small restaurants around town and there are several places to eat and listen to live music.
Browsers might enjoy the thrift stores or vintage stores.
You can get a great introduction to the sacrament of Polynesia if you go by and see 'Kava Dave' at 'The Bayfront Kava Bar' on Keawe street.
Hilo, rain or shine. You find it as it is.
A bus will get you to many parts of the island but it's a slow ride. There bus tours to the Volcano or Mauna Kea mountain and taxi drivers that will arrange to take visitors sight seeing.
A lot of rules don't seem necessary. Like most Hawaiian homes, guests take off their shoes before they come inside.
We encourage recycling.
Smoking isn't allowed inside but smokers can be in our garden if they want to light up providing it isn't bothering any other guests (so your good sense is required.)
We have a very friendly cat who may come by to visit you. If you enjoy cats, she will love to be petted on the porch but she isn't allowed inside out of consideration for guests with allergies. Please don't feed her.
We just left the Lotus Cottage yesterday and I miss it already. This was such a unique, lovely experience. It was different than I expected, but pleasantly so. From the street, you walk into the community through a red gate and walk through a community area that is *incredibly* decorated. Buddhist sculptures, candles floating in water, string lights... in this area, tucked away where the street can't see, are 3 - 5 separate living areas that Megan rents out. I got to know some of the other guests in the communal outdoor hang out area, and they were all very friendly.
The Lotus Cottage is wildly vibrant and decorated in a very eclectic way, which I loved. The kitchen didn't come with an oven or microwave, but it did have a stove top, so it wasn't a big deal. The downstairs shower area was my favorite part about the house. See for yourself... words can't do it justice.
We were a bit concerned when we drove up to the property because it is very much an inner city/downtown location but Megan and Jasper have done a fantastic job of creating a little walled oasis of peace in that location. The location is very central so we parked the car and were able to walk to various sites. The Lotus is a lovely place to stay. The rooms are nicely decorated, the beds are comfortable and the entire place is spotless. Megan and Jasper were great hosts, available and helpful and my son loved the opportunity to play with the family cats.
The lotus was a perfect stay for a few days in Hilo. The apartment is beautiful and clean - well represented by the photos. The rest of the property is serene and relaxing - such a lovely setting right in the heart of downtown.
Kitchen is not a full kitchen - no oven, microwave or dishwasher, so if cooking a lot this may not be the place for you. Perfect though for preparing breakfast and lunches which is what we used it for. Megan keeps it stocked with the incidentals - oil, salt, pepper, etc - which is really handy. Great sized ap[apartment for 2, might be a little cozy with more for any length of time.
Location is perfect - supermarket and nice restaurant literally across the street. Hawaiian Crown pineapple are 2 doors down and make the best acai bowls and pineapple juice you will ever have.
Megan was a great host - very helpful and super friendly. Very relaxed about check in and out which was really appreciated. She lives on the property so is always available.
The icing on the cake was the super friendly cat who spent both evenings purring on our laps on the porch :)
The lotus garden is a perfect location to stay in Hilo. It is situated right in the center of that charming city. A bakery and a supermarket are just across the street.
The apartment has three beds which made it easy for us to life and sleep with our two little boys. The kitchen is fully equipped for everyday cooking.
Megan and Jasper are full of good tips where to go and made us feel home immediately.
And the best thing is the shower..
We enjoyed our stay very much and would recommend it to anyone who wants to stay in Hilo.
There's not much better than listening to the coqui frogs as you drift to sleep, and being dimply aware of the rain on the roof at 3 AM. It's really relaxing. The gardens surrounding the rooms are reminiscent of our time in Thailand, and walking out of our room into that was a great way to start the day.
Let's get this part out of the way: in case you didn't notice: there is no A/C. Most of the time, this won't matter because the night-time rains cool things off. We happened to be there during a hot spell, so it was pretty warm in there even with all the fans going. To be fair, some of the windows don't have screens, so we closed them to keep the mosquitoes off. You can always take a cool open-air shower to cool off and relax before bedtime. Highly recommend that! It feels fantastic.
The best advice I can give is Hilo is not the same as your town. For example, I'm used to fighting for parking downtown, and hoping that I don't get a ticket. This is not something you need to worry about. Just relax, enjoy your stay, and take it all in.
We weren't fortunate enough to meet Megan (she was traveling), but Jasper is the best. The world would be a much better place is there were more people with his enthusiasm and kindness. He was very helpful, and was a wealth of information. We'd stay there again if only to hang out with him.
The point is, you should stay here. It's a great starting point for seeing the rest of the east coast of the big island, and the hosts are wonderful.
We stayed two night and it was a wonderful experience. It's an adorable secluded cottage right in the middle of downtown Hilo. Very clean and cozy. Perfect for 3 people. The kitchen seemed adequate (we didn't do much cooking, just some fruit prep). Our 4-year old daughter walked in and said "I love this house. I never want to leave." Which sums up the experience overall.

Aloha I'm Megan. Meet Jasper also. We've been working to create a colorful atmosphere for visitors that reflects the beauty of the tropics. Both of us enjoy helping guests feel comfortable so that they can relax and enjoy all the magic of this wet and wild side of the island.
Hilo could become known as 'the town that time forgot' because it has the flavor of an older, slower Hawaii. In that way we are pretty easy going and relaxed ourselves. We have two guest cottages and a romantic 1 bedroom apartment here at The Lotus Garden. This is a property that features two garden courtyards, stone Buddha statues, a fish pond and an abundance of tropical plants and trees. . The Lotus Garden is reminiscent of the former 'sugar cane plantation days' when houses were clustered together so that there was a sense of community in the way people lived. Here Travelers meet other travelers in passing. Another wonderful feature of The Lotus Garden is that we are right in the center of town. Guests enjoy being a block away from the Farmer's Market and within walking distance of our cafes, restaurants, galleries and even Hilo's own Kava Bar.
Just ask us. .. we know some great little beach parks close by and some special things to do around Hilo..
... Our latest creed to live by? "Now is a really good time!" And so it is..
