Interaction with Guests
We try to assist guests who may have questions or want advice about places to eat, sites to see. It is up to our guests how much interaction they wish to have with us as hosts.
Hilo has a 'retro vibe' that is charming to many who come here. Hilo has a more than average number of artists & creatives.
There is a fusion of cultures and cuisines which make for some interesting small restaurants around town and there are several places to eat and listen to live music.
Browsers might enjoy the thrift stores or vintage stores.
You can get a great introduction to the sacrament of Polynesia if you go by and see 'Kava Dave' at 'The Bayfront Kava Bar' on Keawe street.
Hilo, rain or shine. You find it as it is.
A bus will get you to many parts of the island but it's a slow ride. There bus tours to the Volcano or Mauna Kea mountain and taxi drivers that will arrange to take visitors sight seeing.
A lot of rules don't seem necessary. Like most Hawaiian homes, guests take off their shoes before they come inside.
We encourage recycling.
Smoking isn't allowed inside but smokers can be in our garden if they want to light up providing it isn't bothering any other guests (so your good sense is required.)
We have a very friendly cat who may come by to visit you. If you enjoy cats, she will love to be petted on the porch but she isn't allowed inside out of consideration for guests with allergies. Please don't feed her.
Megan and Jasper were excellent hosts; they called ahead of our arrival and then met us as we walked up. Their location is the best; walking distance to bars, shops, and restaurants. The sugar shack is adorable and was adequate for the four of us guys. Be prepared for the Coqui, they are in Hilo. I would highly recommend staying at the Lotus (website hidden) Mahalo Megan for the coconut, after my epic adventure on the uni!
Megan and Jasper are great! They made us feel welcomed right away. The space is cozy and inviting, with a very mellow vibe. We all wished we could spend more time (we only had one short day), and will definitely be back. I don't doubt that anyone in our party of six would hesitate to recommend The Lotus Cottage to anyone, ever.
We spended 4 nights in the Lotus Garden in Hilo. The pink house - so called by our 4 years old girl - was a beautiful place of peace and we had a real Aloha-feeling! Thank you Megan and Jasper for the time we could spend at your Lotus Garden
My 2 adult daughters, my husband and I stayed at the Lotus Cottage in early March 2015. The directions Megan gave me, to find the location, were perfect. As I walked in the main gate, Megan was there to greet me! Walking through the gate made you feel like you were in a tropical forest and not just off the Hilo town streets! The cottage was very clean and the white sheets were perfect. The downstairs outside shower was so refreshing and "fun"! It too was spotless and Megan and Isaac even provide shampoo, shower gel, etc, just in case you forget yours. The cottage is a perfect location to walk downtown and get a nice dinner and listen to a local Hawaii band. We actually ate across the street at Pineapples (amazing fish and chips and Happy Hour) then walked down Kilauea Ave to the Hilo Town Tavern for a most excellent evening of music and dance! (We were there on a Tuesday evening and understand they only played music on Tuesdays, lucky us.) There is a KTA (grocery store) across the street too!
I highly recommend the Lotus Cottage. When making my reservations, Megan it easy as we corresponded back and forth regarding our arrival time. I wish we would have been staying longer, in Hilo, as we had a lot more of the eastern side of the island to explore and would have loved to spend more time in our paradise cottage, the Lotus Cottage. I highly recommend staying with Megan and Isaac. They make you feel like you are family! Mahalo!
Megan and Jasper were very responsive and helpful in the weeks leading up to our trip, as well as when we were in the cottage. The house is as beautiful and unique as it looks on the site. We really enjoyed our stay.

About the Host, Megan
Aloha I'm Megan. Meet Jasper also. We've been working to create a colorful atmosphere for visitors that reflects the beauty of the tropics. Both of us enjoy helping guests feel comfortable so that they can relax and enjoy all the magic of this wet and wild side of the island.
Hilo could become known as 'the town that time forgot' because it has the flavor of an older, slower Hawaii. In that way we are pretty easy going and relaxed ourselves. We have two guest cottages and a romantic 1 bedroom apartment here at The Lotus Garden. This is a property that features two garden courtyards, stone Buddha statues, a fish pond and an abundance of tropical plants and trees. . The Lotus Garden is reminiscent of the former 'sugar cane plantation days' when houses were clustered together so that there was a sense of community in the way people lived. Here Travelers meet other travelers in passing. Another wonderful feature of The Lotus Garden is that we are right in the center of town. Guests enjoy being a block away from the Farmer's Market and within walking distance of our cafes, restaurants, galleries and even Hilo's own Kava Bar.
Just ask us. .. we know some great little beach parks close by and some special things to do around Hilo..
... Our latest creed to live by? "Now is a really good time!" And so it is..
