This cottage has a lot of romance; a feel of 'Old Hawaii' and a great location right downtown.
This makes a romantic couples retreat, a restful stay for someone on business trip or a great rental for a group.
Because it is a great little retreat for a couple we have a special rate just for two people. This price is kept reasonable because we are very clear with guests who reserve with us that they are expected to leave everything clean and tidy when they check out. We provide cleaning 'stuff' and ask guests to strip beds, sweep and wipe down surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom. So far our guests tell us that they appreciate the lower rates we offer!
If you are a family or group, the price will reflect a higher rate because it is also listed as a vacation rental elsewhere for groups of up to 5 or 6 people. Hit us up though! We may be able to make you a special offer (depending on the size of your group and the length of your proposed stay).
Because we have this listed as a vacation rental elsewhere we don't usually take reservations more than two months in advance. For bookings more than two months ahead you can look for our other listings on airbnb.com: The Lohi Apartment and also our 'Sugar Shack' (two rooms listed separately that can sometimes be rented as an entire vacation cottage).
The decor of this home features bright colors that reflect the tropics with a mix of restful neutral tones. A queen pillow top mattress and linens awaits our guests here at The Lotus Cottage. Inside the home are bamboo floors and a tiled Kitchen and bathroom. Downstairs our 'Bali Style' shower is tiled and filled with plants, It is accessed via a private (outdoor) staircase. Wi-fi signal is available for guests and the kitchen is stocked with condiments and the basics for tea and coffee.
Those making a reservation for 2 or 3 guests can also make use of a single bed in the 3rd bedroom which adjoins the master bedroom.
If you reserve this cottage for more than 3 guests, you also have have access to an additional queen bed in a room with views to the garden. The price of $120 per night is for 'double occupancy.' Please specify the number of beds needed at the time you make a reservation. In some cases a linen surcharge applies. After 2 guests, for each additional guest add $15 per person. For this rental a cleaning fee of $10 is added to the total fees charged.
TO THE TOTAL COST OF THE RENTAL FEE PLEASE ADD TAX CALCULATED AT 13.42%. THIS IS PAYABLE DIRECTLY TO US UPON CHECK IN. PAYMENTS ARE ACCEPTED IN CASH OR BY PAYPAL OR CREDIT CARD.
We think you will love Hilo. Our trade winds keep it pleasant on even the warmest days and there are plenty of things to see and browse around. We are blocks away from the colorful and bustling Hilo's Farmer's Market. Visit 3 great museums downtown, sit in a cafe and watch people going by or see a movie at our 'Dollar Cinema' or the Historic Palace Theater. We have beautiful parks and gardens within walking distance. For fans of seafood there is a little seafood cafe 15 minutes walk away. Set by a river and the lovely Liliuokalani Gardens it is a place to visit and eat a meal or pick up a fresh fish catch to bring home. 10 minutes drive away there are beautiful beaches for snorkeling and also a surf beach. Another 10 minutes drive takes you to the Imiloa Center, an award winning museum dedicated to astronomy which is of interest to children and adults of all ages. Hilo is also the wettest city in the USA..with over 200 inches of rain per year. No wonder the flowers and trees grow so well here. There are rainy day things to do here in Hilo... venture out with an umbrella and go and see a movie or take in one of our museums until the rain passes... Or 'local style' just get out there and get wet :)
Where ever you decide to stay, we hope you enjoy your visit to Hilo. Thank you for visiting this page.

Great host, perfect location, and a wonderful stay! Megan made us feel right at home and was very accommodative. Highly recommended for these reasons.
Loved staying in The Lotus! My friend and I had a very comfortable stay and wished we could have stayed another night. Megan was very sweet and friendly and we felt right at home. It's a great space for doing some cooking! The outdoor shower is adorable, it feels very exotic. I would definitely recommend staying here :)
My sister and I stayed at the Lotus for two nights and it was fantastic. The cottage is just behind a row commercial buildings in downtown Hilo. This might sound like the place would be noisy, but all you hear are the tree frogs. We were able to sleep with the windows open and heard no noise from town. Totally peaceful place to stay. The house is clean and modern and beds are great. Wi-fi, coffee press, and a gorgeous outdoor shower. That's all you need in Hilo. We needed nothing from our hosts, but extra towels and those were delivered promptly. I HIGHLY recommend the Lotus.
The only reason I am providing three stars is because we didn't actually get to stay at the lotus. My wife and I booked the house a couple of months in advance for our honeymoon and ended up getting double booked somehow. We found this out four days prior us heading to Hilo. Meghan is lovely and was gracious enough to book us a room at a local inn. Fortunately my partner and I are super understanding and easy to accommodate so we just went with the flow. The Inn was nice enough but we were pretty bummed that we didn't get to drink coffee on the Lotus lani and stare at the awesome Buddas. It would have been nice to have had the option for the other booking to have moved instead of us, alas we wanted to keep things easy for Meghan as well. It also would have been nice to have had more notice so we could have found a different place to stay that was more along the lines of what we were looking for. That said, these things do happen and we made the most of what we were dealt. Thank you for resolving the issue and finding us other accommodations :)
My two friends and I arranged to stay at The Lotus in Hilo, HI months in advance of our visit. Three days before our visit, I emailed the host (Megan) to confirm our reservation (two queen beds and a single). The following day, I received a phone call from Megan explaining that she had mistakenly overbooked the room and could no longer accommodate us. She urged me not to cancel the reservation because she said she would be penalized by Air BNB, and then offered to arrange a comparable room at the nearby Pakalani Inn. Since we were only three days out from our departure date, we were grateful for her offer and amenable to the idea of rooming somewhere else. Our only concern was that all three of us would have beds. We didn't know each other that well and I am pregnant, so sharing beds didn't seem like a great idea. Megan later called again and explained that she could not get a third bed at the Pakalani Inn, but suggested that our third person sleep on an air mattress. I asked if she could just book a second room so that we could all have beds and she said this would be too expensive and reiterated that she could provide the air mattress. I told her this would be fine, but that I would not pay any additional money over what Air BNB had already charged to my card.
Megan then called me while we were in the airport enroute to Hawaii and told me that the owner of the Pakalani Inn had not yet confirmed that he would allow an air mattress. Megan also asked that we pay an additional $20 fee for having a third person, which I had to challenge and explain that since she had overbooked us and had NOT provided three beds as promised, we did not intend to pay any additional money to her.
Long story short, my interaction with Megan was not great. We didn't know what our accommodations were going to be until arriving in Hawaii at 10 p.m. at night, had to fight against paying additional money, and overall I felt like I was being taken advantage of, when in hindsight, I could have (and probably should have) just walked away. I cannot say how The Lotus accommodations are like, but can say that working with Megan was a displeasure.
The Pakalani Inn was lovely and Neil, the owner, was very responsive. I would recommend that property over The Lotus anyday.
The cottage is tucked away but still in a centrally located part of downtown Hilo, walking distance to everything. When we arrived Megan was there to greet us and gave us a tour. The flat is simple, sweet, and clean, with lots of light throughout the day. We only stayed one night and we had everything we needed for a great night's sleep before going to the volcanos.
We had a great time here on our Honeymoon. Total garden Oasis in the heart of Hilo. Also, a great little apartment to hang out in. Also, Megan hooked us up with beach towels which was appreciated.
The Lotus is wonderful, I'd highly recommend staying in this clean and charming cottage in downtown Hilo. It's very near to lots of nice restaurants, groceries, farmers market, movie theatre, etc. I loved falling asleep listening to the rain and musical frogs! I wish I had more time to stay longer, but hope to be back next year.
