The room-darkening shades and extra bedding are loved by guests.
Pet friendly, air conditioned cabin with private fish pond (catch and release). Swimming is allowed (at your own risk). Miles of trails, and a million dollar view, total privacy, and glittering stars! Dark Sky area! Hiking, birding, x-country skiing, mt. biking. Near Genesee River. Fully furnished kitchen, deck with gas grill, H-Def TV/WiFi, campfire pit (wood provided). Sleeps eight.

HUNTERS: 75 acres for deer & turkey hunting, 6 hunter max. Must sign waiver and check boundaries with us.

The space
Well behaved pets are welcome, but do let us know as we like to set out dishes and a special quilt in case your furry friends like to sleep on the couch (like ours do!) and a canine first aid kit in case of skunk or porcupine encounters.

Tours of Fred's permaculture plantations, his four-season hoop house, shitaki mushroom farm, and our organic garden can be arranged. He teaches a mushroom growing class every spring. My signed books are available on request. I am always happy to personalize one for a gift and chat with you about writing. You can check out my books on my suebeckhorndotcom website.

While it is just two miles from the village of Whitesville, "The Crow's Nest" enjoys a pristine rural setting. It features some of the best dark skies for star gazing in the east, good birding, and lots of critters, especially deer. We keep trail maps in the cabin.

The cabin sleeps eight with two bedrooms, each with a queen bed and a spacious loft with four twin beds upstairs. The kitchen has up-to-date appliances, a microwave, coffee maker, and all the utensils you will need. The cabin has knotty pine cathedral ceilings, red oak flooring, hickory cabinets, and a beautiful gas heater/fireplace. The view of the Whitesville Valley all the way to Pennsylvania is gorgeous.

The cabin has Hi-Def TV, Internet, and a DVD player, books, games, puzzles, paper and crayons, and a few toys for the kids. We are seldom too hot in the summer, but there is a ceiling fan in the living room and portable fans if needed. It's a good idea to leave the ceiling fan on to circulate heat in the winter.

There is a gas/charcoal grill on the deck and an outdoor fire pit. Propane is provided (spare tank in shed out back) but please bring your own charcoal. Firewood for a bonfire is behind the cabin.

The Crow's Nest is very private with a good driveway with parking space for several vehicles. (No parking on the lawn--save our septic!) Our fabulous, property of hilltop forest, fields, pond, and wild gullies is open for your enjoyment by foot, mountain bike, ski, or snowshoe (2 pairs of snowshoes provided).

We live a quarter mile down the hill and won't bother you unless needed, but you may occasionally see Fred working in the field below the cabin. If we are travelling you will be provided with emergency contact information.

There are catfish, and koi in our pond. (Catch and release please.) They love to be fed! (Food in bin in cabin.) The pond is lovely for swimming, but swimming is at your own risk. We are just a few miles from the headwaters of the Genesee river, so bring your fishing pole and kayak.

This is Amish Country! Slow down for buggies, and look for vegetable stands, woodworking, maple syrup, and quilt shops. There are potters, jewelry makers, a candle maker, and many other artisan studios nearby. Check out the Allegany Artisans website. They have an open-studio tour each year the third weekend of October.

Alfred is home to a world renowned ceramic college and museum. Swain Ski Resort is an hour to the north, the Finger Lakes Wine country an hour to the northeast. There are also a number of great antique shops in the area.

Getting away from it all means you are in the country! Be prepared that gas and groceries are eight miles away, just over the PA border in Genesee. Beer can be purchased in Whitesville and Rexville, but Genesee is a dry town. Laundry services are in Wellsville and Hornell.

“The Crow's Nest" is easy to find, but cell service is spotty as you get close. Directions from GPS may be funky! If you are directed to go up MAHONEY GULLY ROAD, that's WRONG (and not maintained in winter!) The Crow's Nest is located at 267 Irish Hill Road, off Shamrock at the Allegany/Steuben county line. I have also posted a map in our photo collection. The two best ways to get to Irish Hill Road are from Co. Route 98 (first left just south of Rexville) and Shamrock Rd. (second right north of Whitesville).

Guest access
The Crow's Nest is all yours for your stay. There is s good driveway with parking space for several vehicles, SAVE OUR SEPTIC-PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON THE LAWN. Our fabulous acreage of hilltop forest, pond, and wild gullies is open for your enjoyment by foot, ski, mountain bike or snowshoe.

Other things to note
We are just a few miles from the headwaters of the Genesee river, so bring your fishing pole and kayak. This is Amish Country! Drive slowly and look for vegetable stands, maple syrup, and quilt shops. You may like to stop in at Fred's Natural Form Furniture workshop or chat with me about my children's picture books and novels. There are potters, jewelry makers, a candle maker, and many other artisan studios nearby. Alfred is home to a world renowned ceramic college and museum. Swain Ski Resort is an hour to the north. My work: Children's author
Fun fact: I'm a birder!
I write and illustrate children's books. Fred used to build rustic furniture. These days he is involved with tending his extensive organic permaculture plantings of nut and fruit trees and shrubs. He loves to give tours! We hike and ski, watch birds, and play with our dogs, Georgie and Curry. We can't live without clean water, fresh air, good food, family, and friends. We try to live life to the fullest and by the Golden Rule. To learn more about us, visit: (website hidden) or (website hidden).
