  • So I guess it really depends on what you are looking for in Kauai. Jeff and Jennifer greeted us upon arrival and were very gracious and helpful in showing us the room, and offered their cell phone numbers in case we needed anything during our stay. The room was nicer than the photos show.

If you are looking to do Kauai on a budget, this room is an excellent value and nice location on the south side of the island. After exploring the whole island during the week, we felt that the south side was the best for us. Access to the Grand Hyatt property was a bonus, and we walked to Shipwreck Beach many times during our visit.

However, if we were to do this trip again, we would opt to spend more money and get a place where there was a view of the ocean, because the area is so beautiful and we now realize that it would have been worth the added cost to be able to sit out on a patio or deck and enjoy it more during our stay.

The room is comfortable, clean, and the bed is good quality. There is a small refrigerator in the room that we used a lot, and a coffee maker that Jeff and Jennifer supplied with enough coffee to last our stay.

There are a few things that were (email hidden)me that Jeff and Jennifer can easily fix.

For those that they can address, the main feedback we would offer is that, while the attached bath is very nice, the fixtures in the shower should be of better quality than they are. The shower heads are not good, and the main water control handle is so tight that we had to use two hands to turn the shower water on and off, often aided by the additional grip of a wet washcloth. There was no shelf to put shampoo or soap, so one had to reach down onto the floor of the shower to pick those things up. A simple, inexpensive shelf bracket that hangs over the shower head would be an easy way to fix this problem.

There is another review here that suggested that the room be supplied with some silverware, and we would echo that, versus the plastic ware that was provided in the room.

But there is one problem that I don't think Jeff and Jennifer can fix. The unit backs up to the Hyatt employee parking lot on one side, and sits on what can be a pretty busy street on the other side. Even with the windows closed, during a shift change there is a constant drone of vehicles exiting the parking lot, making a turn onto the street next to the unit, and accelerating out into the intersection and down the road as they pass by.

We found this problem to be a source of disappointment that I wish other guests had pointed out in their reviews.

    Response from Jeff & Jennifer:

I do appreciate the kind words and noting that the room is appointed nicer than the photos capture. We take pride in this home that we built ourselves and continue to work on it continually striving to make improvements. The Mauka room is appointed with a very nice carpet from France on top of Indonesian Tiger Wood floors, granite counters, cherry wood cabinets and very high end plumbing fixtures from, Jado, Toto, and Porscher. Given all that, we regret that we were not a good match. We recommend that guests thoroughly read the features and details on the unit and that once they make a choice that they review it based on what was promised. We do not promise an ocean view so we should not be judged negatively when we do not have one. To have an ocean view you would need to book the Alii Suite. To be right on the ocean you need to pay 3 - 4 times more per night. You did not choose to do so. Indeed our next door neighbor offers his rooms for $350.00 per night and the Hyatt offers their garden view rooms at $480.00 per night. We are more than fair with our pricing. Regarding some of you other comments: you expressed difficulty using the shower controls, indicating that we used cheap plumbing fixtures. I wish you would have called us and we would have demonstrated the use of the Jado multi-head shower controls. The shower controller can control up to 4 shower heads. We only have two, therefor, 50% percent of the radius is not to be used. It appeared that the controller was forced into the unused region, making it difficult to force it back out. You mention there is not shelf for shampoos and soaps. but there is. you have multiple options. First, there is a block tile window in the shower which has a deep window ledge that can hold full size bottles of shampoo and cleanser; In addition to that on the tub we left a shampoo and soap holder that you can move to the shower and use there. We do not keep silverware in the suite as there is no access to the kitchen to clean them or any other dishes for that matter. Note we do not promise a kitchen or access to the kitchen in this suite. The Hyatt can be the quietest and nosiest of neighbors. They can only benefit by being quiet as their garden rooms look over the ballroom and it's parking as well. That being said there are times when they fall short in the quiet category. We have built the house with 2x6 fully insulated construction. That with the Mitsubishi ultra quiet split system AC allows guests to block out the occasional noise and stay comfortable. As I mentioned earlier we continue to improve the property and plan to put in water features to mask any noise. Unfortunately, once that is in our prices will go up.

  • Our stay was fantastic. The suite was impeccable...A short walk to the beach, whale and turtle watching. I would definitely come back!

  • We stayed at La Mauka suite February 22-27, 2014. The suite is located directly across the street from the Grand Hyatt Kauai, which is absolutely beautiful and a great place to walk around, have dinner or just a few drinks. The street between the suite and the Hyatt is actually the Hyatt's employee entrance which is busy at most times of the day/night but does not pose any real noise issues as the suite has air conditioning and the windows can be closed at night. The area has great beaches, some harder to find than others, plenty of dining choices and lots of shopping close by. Jennifer is a great host with lots of useful information on the area. We spoke with her when we arrived and my husband had a chat with her in the backyard when she was cleaning up. Other than that we had no contact with her but she was available by phone if we needed anything. We didn't meet Jeff during our stay. The suite itself is quite spacious with a beautiful bathroom. There is a small refrigerator and coffee maker in the walk in closet which is very nice to have available. The only suggestion we made to Jennifer was the addition of a small couch or have other seating available as it would be nice to have some where to sit other than the bed. Overall, we would highly recommend La Mauka suite as a great place to stay while in Poipu, Kauai and we hope to be back soon!

  • Our stay was perfect. The rooms were quiet, clean and very pleasantly decorated. We had all the amenities needed for our convenience, and it was steps away from the Hyatt, We are returning next year!

  • Based on location, based on budget, based on cleanliness, based on hospitality of the host, we give our stay at Pukana La Mauka Suite an enthusiastic thumbs up! Jennifer was there to greet us upon our arrival and was so helpful in sharing her knowledge of the island. While we didn't need her assistance after settling in, she made it clear to us that she was available if we needed anything at all. Mahalo, Jennifer!

  • Could not beat the location for attending a conference at the Grand Hyatt! New, clean, spacious, quiet place. Met Jennifer on our way in- very friendly. Only missing 1 star because the bed was soft for our preference.

  • Elegant studio, very pretty surrounding, kind hosts, good deal, I"d definitely recommend it. The Hyatt resort and the entire neighbourhood is a beautifully kept tropical garden, and the sunny sandy beach is really close. In particular we've enjoyed bodysurfing on the boards provided and appreciated the small things prepared for our convenience: coffee and muffins. Our suite was by the road, but thanks to the closed fence we did not even notice it after we stepped in the gardens.

  • This was a wonderful stay. Booked this Airbnb room during a convention meeting that was held at the Grand Hyatt, across the street. I was surprised at the luxury, cleanliness, and quality of the room, looks better in real than in pictures!
The hosts were great also, easy to communicate with and always present.
    Overall a wonderful experience

  • I had a fabulous stay at Jeff and Jennifer's. The suite was extremely comfortable and private. They have clearly gone to a lot of effort to think through all the possible information and support that guests could need and catered to that. They graciously let you use their beach stuff, and even found me a snorkel set and fins for use during my time there. I would thoroughly recommend staying here and will try to come back if I'm Kauai again!

  • Our stay at Jeff and Jennifer's suite was spectacular. The suite itself is perhaps better than advertised. Very modern, clean and well laid out for visitors.

The location is basically on the Hyatt grounds which is perfect. You have all of the benefits of the guest suite and huge price advantage, along with the full amenities of a top resort within a 3 minute walk.

We wouldn't go to Kauai and stay anywhere else.

About
I have a wonderful family and we live full time on the Island of Kauai. My husband and I are engineers. Since starting with AirBnB, we have had many members from wedding parties stay with us and suggest that we provide wedding / event planning. Check us out on poipuweddings! We live with our youngest son, Connor, who is 16 and our family dog (princess) named Porsche. We love Kauai for it's nature and beauty. We love to hike, swim, board, bike and zumba. We love to travel. Our next favorite area is Telluride / Ouray Colorado.
