The Space

1905 Beach House adjacent to all things Santa Cruz! The Beach Boardwalk is a stone's throw away as is the Mike Fox Skate Park, The BMX course, Boardwalk Bowling, Arcades, Laser Tag and the Big Dipper!

We are a ten minute walk from Pacific Avenue and more adult pursuits or jump on your bike and cruise the river and the ride is 3 minutes! Power walk up East Sea Cliff Drive to Betty's Burgers or the Seabright Brewery. Walk in a different direction and in a half mile you will get to my favorite lunch/breakfast destination, THE BUTTERY. UCSC has a local bus that cruises past the house if you are headed that way or take your car and see the local sights from the Roaring Camp Railroad to ziplining through the Redwood Forest.
Our house has wood floors so a little sand following you home from the beach is not a problem. We have an outside surf shower to clean off the wetsuit before peeling it off. Lock your board and bikes in the basement next to the driveway that parks 3 cars, no need to pay for parking.

She's a 3 bedroom, one bathroom house. There are four full-size beds and one Queen and a twin.(kid sized). They are all dressed with 100% cotton sheets so you can sleep well, following long days at the beach! The kitchen has service for 8 and includes all basic kitchen ammenties and tools, blender, microwave and a gas range with five burners. This is not the house for fancy dinner parties but the house to bring your family and friends and enjoy all that Santa Cruz has to offer!

We have Comcast Wi-Fi and one centrally located TV/DVD player with a selection of family friendly movies but between the free Friday night concerts at the beach or live music downtown, it's hard to imagine watching it?

This is a summer rental only and summer 2014 looks to be starting around June 20th and wrapping up around the middle of September. Otherwise our house is home to UCSC students.

The $10 surcharge after four people is simply to cover water usuage. As with most of California, Santa Cruz rations water. We wash our linens, beach towels and bath towels onsite and the $10 covers the difference between what we use at a regular rate and what we use at a higher rate because we are over our allotment. If your party number changes, simply leave the difference on the dining room table, it has worked well for us on the honor system.

***NEW FOR SUMMER 2014***If you are (email hidden)-union, party, in town for a wedding I would encourage you to try and also book the rear apartment, Called the SURF SHACK. It not only gives you an extra bedroom(queen) 2 cots for kids or spry 20 somethings but the coveted EXTRA bathroom and two additional parking spaces.-if you let me know you are interested in booking both when you put your reservation request in I will give you a deal on the SURF SHACK.

SUMMER of 2015:The City of Santa Cruz levies a 11% tax for the privilege of occupying a room or rooms or other living space in a hotel, inn, tourist home or house, motel or other lodging wherein living accommodations for periods less than thirty days are customarily offered for hire. The tax is paid by the occupant and collected by the operator. The operator then remits the tax to the city. You will be given a receipt for this tax at the time of your stay. It will add approximately $15.95 a night to your stay, to offset this my prices will not increase from their 2014.

Guest Access

In addition to the house: Locked storage for bikes and surfboards, washer and dryer. High speed internet/wifi/TV/DVD player and BBQ.

Interaction with Guests

I don't live in Santa Cruz but closer to SF. Most of our transactions are done electronically. I will be in town the day of your arrival and probably your departure as well. I have missed some guests because they arrive late and depart early but we have a system that allows you to check in anytime after 4pm and depart anytime before noon. You also have a cell number for me which is on and with me 24/7 during the summer. I like my guests to enjoy all Santa Cruz has to offer and will leave you suggestions in addition to my electronic guidebook.

The Neighborhood

We are in Beach flats and two blocks from one of the last Boardwalk Amusement parks that I think is ranked #1 in the country? The summer is bustling with people, there is a lot to do within a few blocks of the house! Surfing at Cowell's Beach, riding the roller coaster, splashing in the surf, bowling, laser tag, skateboard park, walk ten minutes in the other direction and there is downtown and Pacific avenue, full of places to eat, shop or catch a movie!

Getting around

The bus to UC is across the street. It is a ten minute walk to the main bus termil in Santa Cruz that runs buses from all over the Bay Area and to SJ Intl. Airport.

  • Our stay in Santa Cruz was great! Sydney gave us all the info we needed for a seamless stay. She even left us chilled wine and ice cream in the fridge! The house was perfect. It was spacious, clean and had lots of charm. There were toys for the kids, movies to watch and all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. The location was amazing. From the front porch you can hear the screams of the people on the roller coasters and you can watch interesting passerbyers for ages. It is literally a hop, skip and a jump to the Boardwalk, the beach and more. We will definitely be back here next year!

  • We had a wonderful time at the beach in Santa Cruz. Just like the other reviews mention, the home is large, open, friendly, and LOUD. We were aware of this going in and really didn't have any issues with it - but if you are renting here be aware that the street noise is notable, as is the noise if there is someone renting out the back part of the house.

Overall we were so happy with the home, and are already discussing another trip there! We especially loved being able to walk to everything - we hardly even moved the car! Oh - and having access to free, safe parking for 1-3 vehicles was such a huge blessing.

  • The house was perfect for us and just a quick 2 minute walk to the Boardwalk. Plenty of space...and not having carpet anywhere in the house was a bonus! We will definitely try to book this again the next time we are in town.

  • My family went to Santa Cruz for my brother's wedding. This was the perfect location. It is literally just blocks from the Boardwalk, restaurants and the beach. The house was spacious and beds comfy. There is even a little park arouond the corner if you have little kids. This is a perfect beach house. It was clean and had everything we needed. (even an iron) Sydney was very helpful throughouot the week as needed. She even left us delicious wine. My only regret is that we didn't have more time to enjoy the location!

  • The house is great for a large number of people since there are 5 beds in three bedrooms. This is much better than staying in a hotel since it's cheaper, more spacious, and more comfortable. She had some nice touches such as having some pantry items stocked and leaving a bottle of wine in the fridge. The place was cutely decorated. We could tell she put time into making the house nice and homey. Also, it's nice being a 3 minute walk from the boardwalk and beach. The driveway is long and skinny, and at one point we were able to fit 2 minivans and another car in a line, which was nice since the parking around there is very restricted (due to the close proximity to the beach).

  • This beach house was the best part of our trip. It's a short (couple minute) walk from the Boardwalk and beach and as close as you can get basically without living ON the beach. It was so convenient to walk back and forth to the beach; there's a hose outside for rinsing off, and there's also a washer/dryer for quick laundry loads.

The house is super cute and nicely updated with wooden floors and three spacious bedrooms (five beds total!). We loved having the convenience of a kitchen, and Syndey really stocks the house: there's cleaning supplies, pantry items, towels, sand toys, kitchen pots/pans/utensils, cosmetic items, etc., basically everything you need (even food in the fridge!). It was amazing how much is in the house on a purely honesty-based system (take what you need, leave what you don't), which seems to be working quite well.

We had an issue with the wi-fi not working and an issue with the alarm going off (our fault), and Syndey was incredible at responding. She was on vacation at the time, and she texted and then called me back right away, which I really appreciated. Great communication is a must in a good “landlord,” and Sydney is awesome!

The house is very close to downtown Santa Cruz, so we walked to get dinner, pick up groceries, etc. I also ran in the mornings on the bike baths that are just a couple minutes from the house.

Our 3-year-old loved the house so much he still talks about his beach house; that was by far the highlight of the trip for him (even though we went to the aquarium, beach, etc.). At one point, we saw someone loitering in the driveway (it’s a beach town after all), and our 3-year old shouted, “Hey, get out of our beach house.” :)

One note because I think it’s important to keep in mind if you’re not a partier and won’t be staying up all hours of the night (we have young kids, so that was not in the cards): Riverside Ave is the main street down to the boardwalk, and it’s LOUD all the time but especially at night. This is NOT Sydney’s fault obviously, but you have to close the windows to sleep, since even with ear plugs in I could hear the blaring music of the cars driving by (I’ve never been anywhere where people blast music so loudly! It literally made the house windows shake!). I do think nearly anywhere you stay in Santa Cruz that’s accessible to the beach would be like this, though.

This house is an amazing deal, probably about the same price as the crappy motels where you only get a room. We would definitely stay here again!

    Response from Sydney:

Dani-I'm glad you had everything you needed for a good trip. We have lucked out with our guests and yes the open pantry works out pretty well. We'll pass your noise complaints onto the city, they are always working to keep the Boardwalk safe and appealing to families. Sydney

  • We were very happy with this charming, cozy, yet very large house. Sydney was very easy to work with and left exact instructions for making our stay comfortable and convenient. Not only do I highly recommend the house, but I would not hesitate to stay here again.

  • The Beach House was perfect for our family! The proximity to the boardwalk and beach could not be better, and Sydney was a great hostess. The house was good size for us (9 in total, including toddlers and a baby) and Sydney was kind to leave a pack n play for the baby and all. We hope to come back next year! thanks so much Sydney!

  • This home was absolutely perfect for our family reunion. My six year old niece captured the emotion perfectly when she walked in the house and said "this is like a dream come true". We brought things we thought maybe the house wouldn't have, and we regret that now, because Syndey has everything you need. When I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING. Toys for the beach, beach towels, books to read, spices, crock pots, rice cooker, just everything. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook for a family. We spent a week in this home and each night we all cooked together and sat at the table together - we all fit! Seats 8 and it was perfect for game nights (games are also provided). We also grilled outside on the 22'' Weber grill, we made pizza and delicious steaks. As I said, this was a family reunion and all of my family said everyday how great the house was. We walked to beach together, walked along the San Lorenzo to downtown or Trader Joes too. It was truly the best vacation we have ever had as a family. Thank you Syndey for sharing your home with us.

About
Lucky enough to have lived in France for a few years and traveled extensively throughout Europe. Many of my adventures were with three small children in tow so I'm fairly well versed in all things children and how to vacation with kids successfully. I still have two boys underfoot(11&13) so while we were putting our beach home together I was trying to make it comfortable and functional. I spent many summers in a lakeside cabin in Michigan and never once worried about whether I had sand on my feet as I traipsed through the house. We have a slew of furry friends and while WE DON'T TAKE them to Santa Cruz, not a dog friendly town, we do travel with them. Therefore, I understand folks who schelp their four-legged friends along. To that end most things in my house are washable and we simply ask you to keep your furry friends off the furniture and beds. My idea of a perfect vaction is to be able to walk everywhere, life as a mom requires far too much driving! Our girl in Santa Cruz allows me to stroll to Pacific Avenue(groceries, restaurants and movies) as well as a one block stroll to the sand. In my opinion if I can avoid getting in my car, it's a WIN! Currently I'm outnumbered and live with all guys so my movie habits seem to involve a lot of exploding robots or superheroes. I'm also more apt to be found at the pizza place with the Samurai wielding pizza thrower than I am at the "new place." My youngest is an avid hamburger fan so currently we are eating are way through the Burger Joints. Currently, Betty's Burgers are ranked the highest in Santa Cruz. (one location up the hill and one on Pacific Avenue) Keep in mind the food critic is an 11yo boy-he will agree that the Buttery on Soquel Ave. with their outside picnic tables is still our top ranked destination to eat breakfast or lunch in the Cruz.
