This rustic cottage is perfect for the frugal traveler, and those who love the wild outdoors, but want to be warm inside. Lovingly hand crafted with natural earthen plasters and re-purposed elements; off-the-grid with a small solar power supply. Phones and computers can be charged via USB port only. Spend some time exploring the sandstone outcroppings. Follow the loop trail. Chill out on the shade porch.

Covid Notice: We allow 1 day between bookings to allow for airing and cleaning.

The space
This rustic cottage is called the Flicker House, named after the birds that nest under the eaves. It is perfect for the frugal traveler, and for those who love the wild outdoors. The specialness of this space is that it has been lovingly hand crafted with natural earthen plasters and re-purposed elements. Hang your hat on the tree that supports the sleeping loft. Quench your thirst with delicious filtered rainwater. The passive solar cottage heats itself through harvested sunlight. Sometimes you might want to light a fire in the wood stove. The ample shade porch is made of twisted tree branches.

This place has just the essentials for an opportunity to get away from it all. Come here to enjoy the natural environment, and the warm earthen interior of this handcrafted space. A great place for folks who want to get some dirt under their fingernails.

There is a two burner propane stove, a small counter top, and the most essential kitchen ware. There's no plumbing but there is water, soap, and a basin provided to wash up with. The cottage is also stocked with filtered rainwater for drinking. Usually we just make up the double futon on the loft but if you book for 3 guests we will make up the second sleeping space on the small futon that can be pulled out below.

This cozy cottage has just 180 square feet of indoor space. There are lights and usb plugs but no refrigerator. We can provide a cooler which works great in the winter. In the summer you may want to bring ice from town. Phone reception won't be good in the house, but may work if you hike uphill a little ways, depending on your service.

Where you’ll be

Madrid, New Mexico, United States

We are in an off-grid area, a mile and a half down a dirt road, where the neighbors all wave to each other upon passing. But they don't like trespassing! Cell phone service is spotty in these hills and valleys. The land is beautiful and has a peaceful cozy feeling. You can take a daytime hike 40 minutes into the funky artist village of Madrid to get a coffee or a beer or check out the galleries and shops. There is plenty of land to explore here. We explain during your orientation the best places to go and not go.

The first thing you will notice about us is that we are pretty into sustainability. We love living the life we have created here at Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center. We love the land all around, and we love sharing the joys of this life with others by offering this experiential opportunity. We also both enjoy a lot of time on our own to get lost in creative activities. Andy likes writing, playing guitar, making mead, and composting. Amanda is into native and edible plants, designing appropriate technologies, and creating inspiring spaces. We can also be fun loving and a bit silly. During your stay
The tiny hous is located at Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center, where we experiment with and demonstrate solar designs, wise water systems, permaculture, land restoration, natural building and other aspects of self sufficiency. Our guests may wander the site to have a look. In the summer the outdoor community kitchen is open and could be a great place to connect with others staying on site. Sometimes we host classes and events, sometimes we are working hard on a project. Sometimes we have interns. The nearby Tipi may also be booked for a retreat. We are happy to chat with you a bit about our work and the general area. Some guests arrange to stay longer as as part of our Sustainable Living Residency program. We give tours of the sustainable systems in our demonstration site that last an hour and a half. You can find us on airbnb experiences(Tour a Sustainable Living Center). If you are interested, let us know. We may be able to find a time that works with your schedule. You can easily find Ampersand Sustainable Learning Center's website to get a better sense of our place.
