Art Deco BR Suite in Cole Valley

House - Private room · Stanyan St, San Francisco, CA 94117, United States

The Space

Welcome to my comfortable Edwardian home and garden sanctuary. Centrally located in the geographic heart of San Francisco with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Walking distance to GG Park, UCSF, N Judah line and Real Foods market. Cole Valley is a safe, charming, neighborhood with an approachable feel. It's unique with its abundance of green open space: parks and trails nearby. The neighborhood borders the Haight, Twin Peaks, and the Castro. It is a 25 min MUNI train ride downtown or to the beach. Enjoy a variety of restaurants, cafes, and cultural attractions at your feet.

The master bedroom is spacious and peaceful with a private bath and walk-in closet. Typical of homes of this era, the loo is in its own separate W.C. The house is located uphill on a quiet block with minimal traffic. The host's living quarters are upstairs on the second floor of the house, which lends to greater privacy. Sleep on a full-sized firm mattress. Enjoy your morning cup on the patio or in the cozy kitchen.

I'm a native San Franciscan and I'm happy to offer my perspective to make your stay comfortable and memorable.

  • Vera was a wonderful host for my father-in-law's visit. An impeccable home in a wonderful residential neighborhood. I cannot recommend Vera and her suite enough.

  • Vera is a very nice host. Her house is beautiful and in a very nice part of the city. The room is very comfortable and has its own bathroom, toilet is actually a separate water-closet. Vera has a very fun cat named Rumi that would great me each time I returned home. Over all a wonderful stay.

  • Very nice and quiet place to stay in Cole Valley! The room is spacious and the house very clean. The shower is next to the bedroom and the toilet is around the corner. Both are used primarily by guests. It's practically a private bathroom. Fresh towels and fresh linens.

Very was great! She was extremely nice and considerate. There were breakfast stocked up prior to my arrival (eggs, orange juice, yogurt, milk, and bread). Rumi the cat is adorable. He's very curious and it takes a little time for he to get used to new guests but when he does, he's adorable.

I was relocating to SF and stayed here for about 2 weeks as a base to search for a permanent home. It was a great experience. Note that being in Twin Peaks can be a bit cold with SF micro climates. Would definitely recommend the place to a friend!

  • A very lovely house. We were very comfortable. Vera was great. A sweet neighborhood in SF. Very quiet, very private, very clean and with everything you need.

  • Vera is a great host with a beautiful home. It is immaculately clean and decorated very tastefully in homey, eclectic style with great attention to detail. Also, it is immaculately clean. Fresh towels and nice soap are provided, and in the morning the coffee is ready to go with the pressing of a button, with fresh fruit, juice, yogurt, toast, etc. Most every detail is thought of and provided - and if one has a need, Vera is very responsive. The room itself is of adequate size and decorated nicely with antique dresser, wardrobe, etc., and plenty of closet and drawer space. The bed is very comfortable. The only negative for me (and the reason for 4 rather than 5 stars) was that the room is somewhat dark without any sense of "outside coming in," which is something that happens to be important to me (somehow I had a different impression from the photos). There are two narrow windows, neither of which let in a lot of light. However, this is a minor issue for most people. Also, the living room, which Vera invited me to use, has plenty of light.
Located almost at the top of a high hill, the location is very quiet. If one does not have a car, be prepared for the trek back up at the end of whatever excursion you have been on. However, I did not mind this. Also, if you walk UP the hill to the very top - about another 50 feet - you discover a whole other world, including nearby a park with a phenomenal view. Cole Valley is a nice neighborhood with many beautiful streets to traverse (and don't miss Cole Street itself, which has a charming couple of blocks of sweet eateries and other businesses).
Also, Rumi the cat is beautiful, curious, soft and very pet-able.

  • It was great staying at Vera's place. I was there in Dec 2012. The room was spacious and clean. You would have your own bathroom and a separate toilet outside but it was still entirely for the guest only. Plenty of cupboard space for your belongings. There was a cat and a dog in the house and they were really adorable and friendly. The house is at one end of Stanyan street (almost the top of the slope) and if you don't have your own car, the slope would probably be a challenge for you. There are buses and Muni at Parnassus Av and Irving St. 30 minutes ride to either downtown San Francisco or Ocean Beach. There are lots of restaurants along Irving St especially near 9th Av. It is quite convenient to get around San Francisco via public transport.

  • Vera has a beautiful house in a really nice location. She was a very considerate host, so quiet that it almost felt like we had the place to ourselves. Great food and shops within walking distance, and also just a few blocks from the N line which can take you right downtown to the end of Market St.

  • I stayed at Vera's for a few days while I was in SF for work and it was a great experience. The location is off the beaten path in a good way–it's easy to get to other parts of the city, but it still feels like you've found your own hidden corner of San Francisco. The house is beautiful and well appointed and Vera and the cat, Rumi, were wonderful hosts.

  • Vera is a lovely hostess and our stay in her welcoming and beautiful home could not have been more comfortable. The location is great and has a real neighborhood feel; the home is charming and obviously well-loved and thoughtfully decorated. My daughter and I had a wonderful time here, hope to return, and can't recommend Vera and her charming, warm home high enough! Thanks, Vera!

  • This is a lovely home in a quiet neighborhood on one of the steepest SF streets I have ever seen. Vera says she used to skateboard down this hill...and I am amazed! The house is really charming and filled with architectural details typical in homes of the period. You can even see the tip of the GG bridge from her living room, where we'd monitor the fog or lack of it each morning. Vera tipped us off about a row of restaurants nearby on Cole Street, and she was spot on. Lots of healthy food choices just around the corner or down the street; a french bakery, too. And one of SF's most storied bike shops down the hill...American Cyclery. Golden Gate Park beckons, as does the cross-town flat biking route called the "wiggle," which you can pick up from the bike path along the Panhandle. Vera was cool with our parking a rented tandem bike in the garage at night (thank you!). Each morn, courtesy of Vera, a coffee machine all set to go waited for us to push "brew," while other breakfast items waited for us in the fridge. It's a perfect setup, with access to kitchen and a private bathroom steps away, on a leafy hilltop overlooking SF. Take it from a former SF resident: this is a great place.

I'm a native San Franciscan who has lived most of her life here. This family home was originally owned by my grandparents. He was a philosophy professor and she an artist. Her art adorns the walls and his books the shelves. I am completing the requirements to become a licensed MFT currently interning as a school counselor. I love to travel. I especially like seeing America by train. New Orleans is one of my favorite destinations. The things I can't live without are freshly brewed coffee, acoustic music, big screen movies, good friends and James Lee Burke novels. Currently wrapped up in the TV series Madmen. I enjoy living in a harmonious home and meeting world travelers.
