  • Mari was quite nice and welcoming when I arrived. She was also very accommodating to my late arrival (~11pm). It was concerning however that we were not allowed to lock the front door, only our room doors. As a traveler who was not familiar with the safety of the area, this was a bit troubling. Otherwise, the apartment was functional and the linens were clean. It was approximately a 10-15 minute, uphill walk to the shuttle stop that takes you into manhattan.

  • A descent rate for a very private and a clean room. Easy transportation to Manhattan (there is a mini-bus every 5 min in ave. , 5:00am to 1:00AM, 7days a week).
Neighborhood is pretty quiet; I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

  • The place is quite good. Not as clean as it looks on the photos but it is not bad.

The location is very convenient too. 25/30 minutes by bus and the bus stop is just less than 5 minutes away. Hoboken (where you can get a wonderful view of NY) is 40/45 minutes away on foot.

Few bad points, be careful if you plan to stay there for long time: lots of kitchen stuff missing. Only one plate, few glasses etc. for about 8 people capacity in the house. Not a big deal if you plan to eat out all the time, but it can be a bit inconvenient if you decide to cook at the same time with some other people. Also the washing mashing didn't work but there is a laundry place not far away and you can wash and dry your stuff for 3$.

North Bergen is a "Spanish speakers" city. I don't mind about it. Actually I even like it. But honestly you will hear more spanish than english if you hang out and do shopping there.

Overall I would recommand that place. Mari sounds nice (actually I didn't meet her cause she was in vacation). If you expect a real "host" experience, you might not like it, but if you want to have your privacy and not have an "overprotecting" host, go there it's a very good place!

  • • Stayed Here March 28 to April 1 2013, great location 2 blocks (5 min) to bus stop (bus to Manhattan are across the street of the Coach dinner), from there the small buses will take you to nyc for $3 a person in less of 20 min You are 42th street. Room was just what we needed spacious and clean, there are 2 full bathrooms. Hosts were helpful and available on the phone, and gave us a key to be able to enter house when we returned so we wouldn’t disturb anyone. Our Room also locked so felt very secure. Neighborhood felt very safe. The Coach House Diner is not bad restaurant but we discover The Ricky’s Steakhouse two corners for the coach dinner and it was amazing! There’s 4 room in the apartment and all 4 of them are for renting Mari and her family are living just above in there’s house so don’t be surprise to chaired living room, kitchen and bathrooms with other renters and not the host family. Thanks Mari was great and if I come back to Manhattan I will probably get back to your house!! If you are looking for a budget friendly place to stay that has easy access to the city this is a good choice.

  • Mari was such a great host. She was super nice and friendly and always helpful whenever I needed anything.
There are bus stops 5 minutes away from the place and you can easily go to Manhattan using public transportation.
If you have a car, plan to get a visitor parking which is $2 per day as street parking is not allowed without permit. Here is the website:

Overall, I had a good experience staying at Mari's place and will definitely go back to her if I need a place near New York City.

  • Very nice host family. We arrived at the airport close to midnight on Wednesday, and the host was available on the phone and via text to guide us to the house. They even offered to give us a lift to Manhattan the next day. A+ family.

The apartment is spacious, with three private rooms sharing an expansive living room and two full bathrooms, all with a private entryway. The neighborhood feels safe, and getting to Manhattan from this house is a breeze. Don't expect anything fancy though; just the basics.

The bed creaks a bit, and the walls and ceiling don't provide much noise insulation. The host provided enough blankets, but extra pillows would have been a nice touch. Overall, the room is perfect for someone who wants just a place to sleep at night.

There is a full kitchen in the apartment, but we did not use it.

    Some Tips:

    1. Bring your own toiletries.

    2. The house is not ADA accessible, and the narrow alleyway and steps to get down to the apartment (a daylight basement) may be tricky for some folks with lots of luggage. Not a big deal though, but something to consider if you have challenges with steps or very heavy luggage.

    3. The buses to Manhattan stop only two blocks away from the house, right across from the Coach House Diner.

    4. The Coach House Diner is TERRIBLE!

    Thanks Mari!!

  • Very nice host and super value! Easy access to NYC at a terrific price. Off street parking a big plus. Host was very nice.

  • I've seen worse, but that was in the outskirts of Lagos, Nigeria.

First of all, my hosts were nowhere to be found. They sent a young Eastern-European woman who did not speak English to unlock. The room was as uninviting as a prison cell - four bare walls and a bed (which seemed clean, though), and an empty bookshelf. No wardrobe, no table, no reading lamp, NO TOWELS. The shared bathroom was not very clean.
The area is very run-down, and public transport is very difficult for the uninitiated. (This is where it would have helped to be able to speak to my hosts.) A taxi from Manhattan was almost 60 dollars.
The photos on the website are probably of the host's own house, definitely not of the guest part. (Pity I can't post my own photo here.)
I had another 5 nights booked, which I cancelled.
Mari did not answer my e-mails (before my arrival).
