  • We found this hostel by accident -- we needed to be close to the bus station to go on the next leg of our trip. I wish we had time to stay longer so we could have explored more of this historic neighborhood and enjoyed more of the live samba and forró music nearby. Next time we want to go see the stilt-walkers at their theatre a block away, we saw a few coming back from an event and it was quite a sight.

If you are a curious and adventurous traveler who avoids the typical tourist route, it will be a breath of fresh air to stay at Plain & Simple and enjoy real cotton sheets, high ceilings, wood floors, and feel as if you have stepped back into the old Rio. These days most of Rio is one chaotic construction site --but fascinating. And especially the port area will soon be changed forever, who knows how long you have to see it like this?

  • I really enjoyed my stay at Plain and Simple. The room was clean and freshly painted and the shower was first class. The surrounding neighborhood was vibrant with many local samba events giving you a feel for the real Brazil.

It is exactly as advertised; plain, simple, clean, safe and affordable.

  • WOW what a great time thank you Jane & Tomi for the accomodations.
It was exactly what I needed - reasonably priced and clean - I loved the location too - off the path of touristic Rio - The location made me feel like I was part of the fabric of the city . I'll be back next year and will def stay with you again.

  • Just right! I needed a comfortable place to spend the night in Gamboa and it was perfect. Good location on a rough but safe neighborhood street. Very clean. Comfortable bed. Nice hot shower. Good wifi. GREAT VALUE. Thanks! I'll be back.

  • I had been several times in Rio before, but this hostel allowed me to discover a very different city - a fascinating city as well. In Gamboa you are in the middle of a very alive zone, that is linked to the past, the slavery port of the XIX century, and to the future, which is an area in a big urban transformation. The atmosphere of the neighbourhood is incredible, and we could walk all over the streets beside the center, the heart of the old city. The hostel has also a very good relation quality/price. And Tomi and his family give to the place a fantastic energy.

  • Great place and location! I enjoyed staying in Gamboa. As Rio's port zone, the neighborhood has lots to offer in terms of history and nightlife all the like. Not the usual South Zone Rio/Copacabana joint, yet highly recommended for anyone traveling on budget and willing to explore a different side of Rio de Janeiro.
