This apartment offers a unique opportunity to experience some of Richmond’s rich and diverse history, right in the midst of some of the area’s oldest architecture. Constructed before the Civil War, circa 1855, this newly renovated boutique apartment in Richmond’s historic Shockoe Bottom is filled with modern amenities and mid-century modern decor. The past is evident in its high ceilings, exposed brick walls and multi-paned windows.

The space
The word “Shockoe” is derived from the Native American Powhatan/Algonquin “Shacahocan,” meaning a flat rock at the mouth of a creek. Shockoe Bottom is east of Richmond’s downtown area, near Church Hill and the James River. The new pedestrian mall on 17th Street is almost right outside your door, and some of the area’s most popular restaurants have plenty of outdoor dining on the mall, the site of America’s first farmers’ market.

An interesting and quirky aspect of this second-floor apartment is that its private entrance is located in a restricted-access alleyway. Two restaurants share the alley with the apartment, which is located directly above an authentic Mexican restaurant, Tio Pablo, owned and decorated by the same people who are offering the apartment. The apartment’s owners have shared an eclectic mix of antiques, collectibles, original artwork and contemporary furniture in creating this special getaway, and you’ll find that it offers spaciousness, comfort and character.

There’s a seating area on a small deck outside the apartment, which opens to a spacious open-plan kitchen/dining room with a well-appointed kitchen and a massive hand-painted table capable of seating 16 diners, should you decide to host a meal for friends. The room has high ceilings, a fireplace, (non-operational), a portable bar, plenty of windows and a skylight.

The single bedroom has a queen-size BioPosture mattress, complete with quality linens. The bathroom has a tub and shower, and vintage tiled floors, and a separate laundry room has a washer and dryer.

A large living room overlooks East Franklin Street and has a fireplace (also non-operational), leather sectional sofa with additional seating, a large-screen Smart TV and windows overlooking the street.

Amenities
Our guests have access to free Wi-Fi Internet, Smart TV, fully equipped kitchen, dishwasher, A/C, heating, washer and dryer, hairdryer, cotton towels and high-end sheets.

Guest access
You have free reign over this apartment while here. There are no shared spaces excepting the access to the stairs up

Other things to note
Since there is a restaurant operating below this apartment, you may hear music playing during business hours, and restaurant deliveries are made in the shared alleyway. While the apartment is private, it is not silent and it boasts the pulse of city living. Also, be reassured that Richmonders tend to be very COVID-aware, and they take the current cautionary protocols seriously.
