About this listing
Faces South with magnificent views over the valley from the private garden. Just 15 minutes from Mont Dore ski station in winter with superb walking, cycling and swimming in the local Plan d'eau in the summer. Perfect for family holiday holidays
Although little known to Brits and Americans, the Auvergne in the Massif Central has long been popular with the French. In the winter there is downhill skiing at the nearby resorts of Le Mont Dore and Superbesse. Plus plenty of cross country skiing, snow-shoe walking and climbing.
In the summer there is great walking, horse riding, road cycling (the Tour de France went almost past the house in 2011) and mountain biking plus swimming in the lakes or at the superb new swimming pool in La Bourboule, There are also lots of sites to see and special events. And there's also a great golf course at nearby Le Mont Dore.
Throughout the year the food is great and includes local specialities such as Truffade and Potée.
Our house is in 'Le Bourg' the central part of the village, a collection of beautiful old Auvergnian houses with roofs of stone or the traditional oval shaped slates arranged around the village church. However because it's on the edge of the Bourg it's extremely quiet and well away from the road. It is at an altitude of just over 1000 metres and has fantastic views, from the very sunny south-facing front garden, across the valley.
The house has been completely refurbished and tastefully furnished with good pictures, nice old furniture and solid oak floors, staircase and doors. Downstairs there is a very spacious kitchen/diner with French windows giving out onto the sunny front garden. There's also a sitting rom (with 100cm flat-screen TV, DVD player and wifi), a double bedroom and a ground floor bathroom with a walk in shower. On the first floor is the large ensuite master bedroom, a family bathroom and two other double bedrooms including one with access to a balcony and steps down to the back garden. On the third floor are two charming bedrooms under the eaves together with a toilet and wash-basin.
The well equipped kitchen has a 6 burner hob, a large fridge freezer, a second fridge, coffee maker, kettle, toaster etc.
Full access to the whole house and front and rear garden. We just have a couple of locked cupboards in the attic.
Interaction with Guests
We know the area well and are available by phone and email before you arrive and during your holiday if requred
Do not miss the Parc Fenestre in La Bourboule if you have young children. Older kids will love the Mont Dore Adventures just outside Le Mont Dore.
L'Amuse Bouche, our favourite restaurant is not to be missed. Otherwise there are lots of places serving local Auvergnian dishes.
The walking, cycling, running and VTT is fantastic in this region. But you can also swim in the Plan D'eau, 10 minutes walk from the house or at the luxury new indoor pool in la bourboule (2 km away)
The local Mont Dore ski area is great for beginners but also has challenging off-piste when the snow is good
You can fly to Limoges (2 hours), Bergerac (2 1/2 hours) or Clermont Ferrand (less than 1 hour) and then hire a car. Or you can get a train to Clermont and hire a car there. There is a station in La Bourboule (2km away) but the trains are not very frequent.
Maximum capacity of 12 people.
Strictly no smoking in the house but you can smoke outside. Gas, electricity, tax and logs are included. There is a £60 for cleaning added on. The hire of linen (sheets, towels, etc.) is 8 euros extra per person to be paid locally. The house is semi-detached and we ask you not to play loud music late at night.
Director of a holiday cottage agency called West Country Lets in Devon. We specialise in hand-picked cottages and apartments in the South Hams and Devon areas.
I moved out of London in summer 2010 to Devon. Married with two teenage sons and in my spare time into cycling (on and off road), trail running. skiing and the occasional triathlon.
In the past I worked as a journalist & magazine publisher but more recently have run my own companies: a dating company, a travel company and now my agency.
I'm happy with lots of styles of travelling. I have particularly fond memories of cycle camping around Europe. But a bit of luxury can be good too.
