The room is very spacious and tranquil, just as described! It is a much different feeling from staying at hotels whose rooms all begin to look the same. It feels authentic and relaxing. The beach is very peaceful as well, and from the front of the house you can see the sea two blocks away. In the room you can enjoy the sea breezes and sounds from the jungle or close the patio doors and turn on the A/C. The ADO bus station and the ferries to Cozumel are located close to the entrance to the gated community in which the B&B is situated, as are restaurants and shops, and the walk to the entrance is pleasant with many beautiful houses and opportunities for views of the beach along the brick-paved way, or if you prefer, a side path with jungle and wildlife. A beautiful stay and rounded out our vacation nicely.
The pictures do not pay justice to the size of this room... it is quite something else - the size of a small London or Parisian flat.
Mariano is an excellent host, always with a good story to hand but will also respect your privacy.
There is a great atmosphere in the house and it is an excellent place to relax, unwind and forget about the world.
The place is great, exactly as in the pictures, very clean, huge and luminous room and bathroom, large and comfortable bed (and yes, the hammock is there!). Mariano is always available to answer questions about anything (both in english and in spanish). The ladies preparing breakfast are so nice! And the breakfast is great, everyday a new mexican breakfast dish (ask them for the flautas de pollo, they are AWESOME).
Our second stay was just as wonderful as the first! – We so enjoyed our time at Mariano’s last year that we were eager to return. Casa Tambuuco is a handsome Spanish-colonial 4-story house in Playacar, a lush green neighborhood of architect-designed residences in the south end of town, just two short blocks away from the beach. Mariano is a very interesting semi-retired civil engineer/architect from Mexico City who speaks very good English and has traveled the world. We greatly enjoyed our morning conversations with him, as well as with other guests.
Casa Tambuuco is truly a lovely house, both elegant and simple and very comfortable. Mariano designed and built this “new old house” about 18 years ago in a traditional style: thick walls of rubble stone, white-washed throughout the interior, and 12-15 foot ceilings supported by natural logs over spacious rooms with concrete floors that have incised divisions and embedded tile borders. The floors are partially covered with antique oriental carpets of random dimensions, the furnishings are also antique, and each room has multiple sets of French doors leading out to terraces or balconies. Ceiling fans move the air coming from these openings; the rooms also have air conditioning available, but we found no need to turn it on and spoil the experience of being indoors and outdoors at the same time.
Adding to the luxurious experience, Bella the cook prepares wonderful breakfasts for the guests each morning, something different each day – creative main dishes of eggs or enchiladas or quesadillas, freshly made salsas, fresh fruit and yogurt and granola, and breads. Both Bella and the housekeeper Gladys are warm and friendly, and our minimal Spanish and their limited English did not interfere with cheerful communication between us. We also enjoy playing with Mariano’s affectionate (outdoor only) cat, who helps us with our kitty separation anxiety.
We hope to come back to Casa Tambuuco next year, and every year!
Our stay at B&B Tambuuco was absolutely perfect in every way! It was such a special experience to live in Mariano's beautiful home.
Our room was gorgeous, and kept spotlessly clean by our lovely maid, Gladys. With 3 balconies to choose from we had a fresh breeze circulating around the room and never needed A/C. The bed was huge and extremely comfortable, and the hammock was a real treat.
Although there were other guests staying in the house, we never would have known, as it was always so quiet and peaceful there. However it was nice to meet the others and have a friendly breakfast each morning. Bella the cook was a real sweetheart and cooked something different every day. There was also plenty of delicious fresh fruit, juice, cereal, yoghurt, and croissants.
The location was excellent - just a few steps away from a beautiful safe beach, in a lovely quiet residential area. Close enough to walk into town (around 15 minutes) to explore the neighbourhood, which felt totally safe and had many great restaurants and bars.
It was a real pleasure to meet Mariano, who is such a charming and fascinating man. Our stay in Playa del Carmen was truly unforgettable, and I hope we will be back soon!

After living in the post-jet set Acapulco, I wanted a change of sea.
And while I was searching, I found this corner of the Caribbean; this place that bewitched me with its history and its air of mystery. And here is where I built my new “old” house. I made it of stone and very spacious, and I brought with me memories and my old family furniture.
I hired a good cook so I could lavish attention on my friends and the friends of my friends. And that is what I have been doing here for the past 15 years.
