The apartment is located in quiet and peaceful part of the island, benefits its a shallow beaches just two minutes' walk, close to Homers tomb-within walking distance, yet only fifteen minutes by car from the the village Chora.
The area Plakoto is about 13km from the port of Ios so you will need to rent a car.
Getting to Ios: Depending on where we are coming from, we take one of two means of transport:
1. From Athens' port Pireaus - Fast ferry - about 4 hours
2. Fly to Santorini and then take a 50 minute ferry to Ios
We had the mot wonderful time at Plakoto. The apartment has everything you need and Maria is a very thoughtful host. The isolated location can feel a little overwhelming at first as someone said in an earlier comment but after you got used to it, you'll never want to leave that magically peaceful place. Not only would we recommend that place to fellow airbnb travellers, we also wish we'll be back some day.
Our stay in Ios was incredible, and Maria was a fabulous host. She met us at the port, even though our ferry was delayed until 11pm. She showed us to the house, helped us rent our ATV, and gave us a tour of the town. The house had everything we needed, and was only a 5-minute walk from the beach, which was effectively private. We felt at home, and would absolutely recommend Maria's house to anyone looking for a peaceful stay on the Greek Isles.
With regards to the correspondation; Maria responded very friendly and fast on my messages via airbnb
She made a reservation for us for a car ( i'd recommend a 4wd for making trips to seccluded beaches), a car is very much wanted for your stay on Ios. Maria picked us up from the port herself and drove to the appartment with us. Maria is very friendly and made us feel welcome. The appartement is simply decorated and lies on the (very) quiet Northern side of the island, but in fact its only a 15 min drive from the village. The view from the appartement is amazing, you'll get your private sunset every evening while lying in a hammock. The whole experience of being alone within a 5 kilometer radius is a bit overwhelming at first but it grows on you and soon you want nothing else. We loved our stay at plakato and would go back any time.
Maria is a great host and helped us with renting a car and with directions on the island. If you like quietness and nature, this will be perfect for you. The view from the house is amazing, you can see two islands on the horizon. The shores are beautiful and the sea is as blue as advertised ;). The house is isolated, on a small hill over the sea (sea access is very easy though), without any neighbors. You're likely to be the sole living soul in a 15km radius, short of the occasional encounter with goats or sheeps. The house is mostly off grid, using a mix of sea water and soft water for shower and tap, and uses solar electricity. You'll get a cell signal with fair data rates if you're not willing to completely disconnect ;). We spent our week there playing boardgames we brought, reading books and snorkeling (if you're coming in Autumn, a small wetsuit might be best).
As the house is mostly off grid, it might be best to bring eco-friendly soap, shampoo and washing powder (there is no washing machine in the flat). In Autumn the weather was a bit windy but not very cold.
Once again, this was a great stay and we had a wonderful time. Thanks Maria, hope we get to come back one day :).
My wife and I were lucky enough to spend 19 nights at this wonderful Oasis on Ios.
From the start, Maria was very helpful in all her communication and arranged to meet us at the port and assist in the rental of a 4WD and purchasing supplies.
She even had a delicious home made cake and fruit waiting for us :)
The apartment is beautiful and has an amazing outlook over the sea.
This place is very secluded - which is exactly what we wanted and is at least 20 minutes from the village, so you must hire a vehicle of some sort to get yourself around. We hired a pair of scooters from Road Runner (highly recommended) at the port, then later switched to a car (to get our luggage back to the ferry), even though Maria offered to come and collect it for us.
This place had everything we needed, especially the hammock and the serenity on one of the most special islands in the world.
Greatly enjoyed our stay and would love to do it again some time.
Thank you for your outstanding hospitality Maria and family, hope to see you again one day.
P.S. Got to see the seals on our last day, which was a real treat!
Our stay in Plakatos was wonderful. All the description made by Maria are truly accurate. We spent 2 weeks in September and it was still warm enough. Also we were happy to discover the beach just 5minutes walk from the Plakotos house. If you want a quiet place with nobody around , that is the place to go. If you want to travel in the island and visit Chora (the village), you should definitely rent a ATV, bike or a car.
We are more than happy about our stay in Plakotos. Also Maria was really helpful and we will remember her kindness.
Garance & Philippe
A simple life... in the midst of northern Ios, surrounded by some seals to share breakfast with, some goats who may join you for a pre-dinner drink, and Maria who pops in every 5th day to change the sheets.
Otherwise you are not likely to meet many people in Plakatos - note the alliteration with Paradise.
Maria is a fabulous host, willing to help with everything you may need. Thank you for this unforgettable stay!
