Jalatlaco was named Mexico's first Barrio Mágico for a reason. Marimba practice in the afternoons, local bakers selling goods all the way through to 11pm, calendas whirling through the cobblestone streets on weekends, murals around every corner, speciality coffee to-go for a wander in Parque Llano and street-side tacos all day long. It's a neighbourhood with real daily life — and Aldea Tuya sits right in the middle of it.

The space
Three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and handmade furniture by Iván, the historic centre a 10-minute walk away, and a rooftop terrace with a hammock and mountain sunsets. Our house is ideal for a group of friends, two or three couples, or a family looking for space.

Each room has its own character — local textiles, hand-made ceramics and bedside lamps that cast warm, cosy light.

Upstairs, the terrace looks out over the Guelaguetza Auditorium and the Sierra Norte; it's where mornings with coffee and evenings with mezcal tend to happen. When the mood calls for staying in, dine under a disco ball (you'll understand when you arrive), settle in with a movie and enjoy fast Starlink WiFi that reaches every corner.

Mercado de la Merced is a 10-minute walk, ideal for stocking up on fresh fruit and veggies, and is worth the trip for a hearty local breakfast.

Marisol and Sarita, who take care of the house, have been with us since the beginning and are part of what makes it feel like home.

Guest access
You'll have the whole house to yourself. Each bedroom has its own front door key, and there's free street parking right outside.

Other things to note
Aldea Tuya is a real house in a real neighbourhood — lively, walkable, and occasionally loud in the best way. Nearby cafés and bars close around 11pm; however, during the Guelaguetza in July and Día de Muertos in late October, the streets fill with comparsas and live music until late. We kindly ask that noise on the terrace stays low from 11pm out of respect for our neighbours.

The staircase to the rooftop is spiral and open-sided, and the second-floor stairs have no railings — worth knowing if you have mobility concerns or are travelling with very young children.

For water pressure, showers one at a time work best. Note there is no hot water in the sinks, but the sun takes care of that during the day. We're in an old house with old pipes in a drought-prone city, so towel reuse goes a long way too.

Not sure if the house is right for your group? Send us a message — we're happy to help you figure it out.

Neighborhood highlights

Barrio de Jalatlaco is one of the most lively neighbourhoods in Oaxaca and Mexico's first "Magic Neighbourhood", adorned with colourful facades and murals. This area comes to life during Día de los Muertos, where comparsas (parades) dance down the cobbled streets, accompanied with a live band and calendas (parades) whirl down the streets during the Guelaguetza (July).

We're Sophia & Iván, the duo behind Aldea Tuya: a welcoming space full of local textiles & ceramics, so you can experience Oaxaca from your bedroom. Most recently, we spent a year in our 1975 VW Combi, travelling Central America, selling coffee and meeting producers - the start of a new adventure, hopefully! Ivan is from Oaxaca City and is full of local tips and recommendations, mainly for tacos and mezcal - reach out for any suggestions! Follow along on IG: aldeatuya.oax
