Get off Duval and experience natural Florida Keys! My house is located in a quiet neighborhood on Big Pine Key on an acre lot and the three lots adjacent to mine are owned by the Department of Environmental Protection and so will never be developed. Lots of wildlife can be viewed, including key deer, box turtles, lizards, geckos, snakes, and many species of birds. There are also lots of places to go nearby for bike rides and long walks. I am a biologist and I’d gladly talk to you about the local wildlife.
I have two rooms to rent out. This listing is for the flower room, but check out the bamboo room in my other listing. The flower room has a full sized bed. The two rooms share a bathroom (bathroom now has a big beautiful open shower- there is no tub anymore); I have my own. You are welcome to use the fridge, cook in the kitchen, and use the laundry facilities, but keep in mind that I live there too, so please clean up after yourself. Available to you are my spices, condiments, and other basics like sugar and olive oil. I will provide bagels, bread for toast, and coffee for my guests to prepare at their leisure. You are also welcome to borrow my two bikes, two kayaks and a kit to transport them (fits most cars), 2 beach chairs, two yoga mats, and snorkel gear for a medium sized woman. Although I am not on a canal, there is plenty of room in the yard for a boat/trailer. * I fully intend to return deposit, but it's just in case I need to replace something due to carelessness (without I have no recourse). Also, I probably won't take 2 day reservations many months in advance- to make hosting easier on me, I prefer to take longer reservations and then fill in with shorter reservations a month or two out. Lastly, I've had a few complaints about the AC being noisy, so that's something to consider if you are a very light sleeper.
Interaction with Guests
I'll be around.
you pretty much need a car to stay at the house
-Shut the gate and ensure the posts are securely in the fence post holes, otherwise the key deer will break in and eat all my plantings! This is the most important rule!!
-Equally important rule- DO NOT TAKE THE KEY WITH YOU. Leave it where you found it so that guests of both rooms have access to it. **violation of either of the first two rules may cost you your deposit.
-No party people...beer and wine are fine as long as it's not excessive.
-I will take care of washing towels and sheets and vacuuming; beyond that, please clean up after yourselves.
-Please turn off all lights if you are the last one in.
-Recycle (blue bin on porch) and compost (white container next kitchen sink) as much as you can and only use biodegradable laundry soup
-Wash your sandy feet with the hose outside, not in the shower- it's a total pain to clean a sandy shower.
-Fireplace is capped off and not intended for use- smoke WILL NOT flow out. Do NOT use fireplace.
Key-West.
Our stay with Kerry could not have been better. The house and gardens are beautiful and well kept. Kerry's list of suggested activities, dive shop and restaurants was great. This is a place we would like to visit again. Thanks again Kerry for everything.
We enjoyed our stay with Kerry a lot. We loved the house and the area, the nature and everything. Kerry e-mailed us all the instructions to her place as well as all the info we need staying in the Keys. (great recommendations!) All in all we had a great experience.
Very nice and private location. Short commute to Bahai Honda state park, and to Key West. Kerry offered advice prior to our trip since it was our first time in the Keys. Would definitely stay again !
What a wonderful, yard, house, room, host and even the other guests were great. Kerry was very welcoming and thoughtful, letting me know her availability for questions about the area and her experience buying here. Sending info ahead of my stay about the area, was great and the amount of info and reviews on area businesses was really helpful.
We had a great Keys experience staying at Kerry's. Her list of helpful tips are almost worth the room price alone! So follow her lead for a great trip. Her home is on a beautiful acre of land and easily accessible from the U.S. 1. Her home is beautifully decorated and clean. We visited several Keys on our trip, and even though it's a quiet one, we'd highly recommend staying on Big Pine with Kerry. It's a memorable experience and ecologically fascinating. One thing to note is that you sleep in close quarters with Kerry and the other room's quest (if there is one). This wasn't a problem for us, but you do feel that you have to be considerate about the amount of noise you make at night. But if you just take to the nice balcony for your late night conversations, you're all set. Thanks Kerry!
My wife and I had a great time and Kerry was very accommodating. She has a very lovely house in a quite neighborhood. We didn't really stay there much as we celebrated New Years in Key West and spent the next day there as well, so it was mostly to have a place to sleep and have our bags. All around, great and will recommend her place to anyone. Cheers and have a great 2015.

I am a marine biologist living in the Florida Keys. I love it down here and recently bought a house...so I won't be leaving any time soon. I hope to share my home with others. I trust they will enjoy the Keys as much as I do! I have been really enjoying meeting all of my lovely guests and sending them off to my favorite restaurants, bars, and tourist destinations. I love to travel to a location where someone I know can help guide me to have the best possible vacation, so it's fun for me to try to do the same for my guests. A few of my favorite activities include ultimate frisbee, SCUBA diving, biking, jogging, kayaking, gardening, traveling, and making dinner with friends.
