About This Listing
Welcome to my home! I look forward to having you as my guest. My home is very comfortable, clean, well-cared for, and tastefully decorated. It's a very pleasant, safe, & quiet space for women travelers.
The guest room where you'll stay is about 11' x 11' in size. It is furnished with a nice double bed with a good mattress, a comfortable upholstered chair, a small bookshelf, a desk, and a full-length mirror. The bed has a down comforter for colder nights, a ceiling fan over the bed for hotter nights, & room-darkening blinds on the window. The guest room is right across the hall from the shared bathroom.
I provide all bedding (clean sheets, blankets & pillow) and fresh towels, of course. There is also a variety of reading material (books & magazines) in the guest room. There's even a luggage rack in the bedroom so you don't have to put your suitcase on the floor. Free wireless is also available for your use.
I live in North Buffalo, at the edge of the city of Buffalo (about 6 miles from downtown) & just three short blocks from the suburb of Tonawanda. My house is also within 2-4 miles of the suburbs of Kenmore, Snyder, and Amherst & just 16 miles from Niagara Falls, New York. Buffalo is a college town. My house is in walking distance of the University at Buffalo (south campus) & within 3-5 miles of Buffalo State College, Canisius College, Daemen College, & Medaille College.
My house is a great location if you're a visiting professor, attending a conference or other event at one of these colleges, or visiting a son or daughter attending one of our colleges. For an excellent overview of Buffalo, view the video "bestdesignedcity" on line.
My house is 3/4 of a mile from the subway (Metro) & a four-minute walk from the closest bus stop (at Kenmore & Montrose Avenues). I live about 7 miles from the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport. For details about Buffalo's public transportation system, look for Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority" ("NFTA") on-line.
If you arrive by car, you may park on the street (free parking) or possibly in my driveway.
My neighborhood offers an eclectic mix of city living. Within walking distance to my house are inexpensive restaurants like Amy’s Place, as well as more upscale dining like The Steer and Shango Wine Bar featuring New Orleans food & live music some nights. A great restored 1950s diner, the Lake Effect Diner, is also in walking distance of my house.
If you arrive without a car, these places are in easy walking distance of my house (less than 1 mile: a large grocery store (Tops); 2 drugstores - Walgreen’s & CVS; several pizzerias; Wendy’s; an inexpensive taco place (Mighty Taco, very well-known locally); & the ever-popular Tim Horton’s coffee shop. I live less than a half-mile from the suburb of Tonawanda & my house is also within 3 miles of many suburban conveniences & restaurants, including the Boulevard Mall.
If you are coming to Western New York primarily to visit Niagara Falls, be aware that I live in Buffalo, which is 16 miles from Niagara Falls, NY. If you have a car, no problem. However, if you arrive by bus or train, please plan to arrive at the BUFFALO train station (on Exchange Street, in downtown Buffalo) or the BUFFALO bus station - not Niagara Falls.
If you arrive by bus, you will get off the bus at the bus station in downtown Buffalo, on Ellicott Street. Walk up to Main Street (just 2 blocks) and take the Metro (subway) to my house. Exit at the last stop - University Station - which is 3/4 of a mile from my house. If you arrive after dark or in bad weather, I may be able to pick you up at University Station so you don't have to walk. Be aware that on Sundays & holidays, the metro and bus schedules are more limited.
My house is also 1 hour from beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake (in Ontario) & about 90 minutes from the vibrant city of Toronto, Ontario, in Canada.
I have been active in two other home-stay travel organizations for 19 years, so I've had considerable experience hosting guests in my home. I very much enjoy meeting travelers.
Your guest room has a large basket full of tourist information about Buffalo, Niagara Falls, & Western New York. I invite you to look through it - you'll be surprised at how much there is to do and see in Western New York! - and you can help yourself to any tourist brochures. I can also lend you a Buffalo-area street map, if you don't have a GPS.
Coffee (regular or decaf) and tea are available, upon request, throughout the day, when I'm home. If you book at least 72 hours in advance, I will try to accommodate any special requests, if possible.
Be aware that I usually turn off my computer about 10:00 pm. Requests sent to me after 10:00 pm probably won't be seen until the next day.
The living room, the eating area & when weather permits, the back deck & front porch.
Interaction with Guests
I enjoy chatting with my guests and getting acquainted with them. I also like to travel so it can be enjoyable to swap travel stories.
My neighborhood offers the best of both worlds - the character & interest of city living, yet in very close driving distance to most suburban conveniences.
Other Things to Note
If you stay at my house on Saturday night, be aware that you will probably need to check out by 9:00 am on Sunday. But I will still prepare a full breakfast for you, at 8:00 am, before you leave.
Quiet is key. The bedrooms in my house are close together. Because I work full-time, I ask guests to be considerate & very quiet after 11:00 pm.
To maintain cleanliness, I ask that all food and beverages be consumed at the kitchen table. Food and beverages are not allowed in the bedroom.
Only one shower per day is permitted, and showers can be no longer than 5 minutes long.
I would ask that you remove your shoes when you enter my house. Also, my hardwood floors were recently refinished so I would ask you not to wheel or drag a suitcase on the floors (including the floor of the guest room). Rather than carry a large, heavy suitcase up the stairs to the guest room, my guests have found it easier to bring only a small suitcase or overnight bag into the house.
You may arrive after I get home from work, any time between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm. If I have an evening commitment and will get home later than 6:00 pm, I'll let you know in our initial communication (I'm rarely out later than 10:30 pm).
If you're a partier, a heavy drinker, or a smoker, I'm afraid my place is not for you. (Smoking is not permitted in my house or anywhere on my property, including outside.)
Saturday breakfast is usually homemade pancakes or eggs, if you prefer - or both. Cold cereal, hot oatmeal, & whole wheat toast are also options. I'm happy to serve you a nice breakfast.
Before sending me a request, take the time to describe yourself in your profile; otherwise, I won't be able to host you. Knowing a little about you (for example, where are you from? What brings you to Buffalo/Western New York? What are your interests? ) can also help me be a better host.
I don't allow pets.
It was great accomodation! Sharon kindly served me with home-made breakfast. She first even asked me what I like to have.
The house was very clean, and located near University station where I could easily take either local bus or metro rail to downtown.
Sharon picked me up at the bus station on the first day and also she gave me another ride coming back to her house.
Sharon is a great host and respects her guests. If I have a chance, I would like to stay again in near future.
Sharon was a friendly host and very knowledgeable about Buffalo. The room and house were comfortable and clean. Nice, safe residential neighborhood.
Very clean and well-cared for home in a nice neighborhood, comfortable room and bed. Especially convenient location, as I needed to spend time in the city of Buffalo and visit friends in the suburbs. Sharon was welcoming and helpful, and was eager to attend to my needs.
Comfortable room and neighborhood, felt safe parking my car and walking to a local restaurant that Sharon suggested. The home cooked breakfast was a nice treat.
This was my first experience using airbnb and I have to admit, I was a little nervous. However, Sharon made it a pleasant experience. She was very flexible with my arrival time, which I appreciated. Once I arrived she made me feel welcomed and comfortable in her home. She gave me a tour of the house and even invited me to join her in her lovely backyard. The room I stayed in was clean, nicely decorated and perfect for what I needed. Sharon also offered to make me breakfast the following morning; however, I had plans.
About the Host, Sharon
I''m an active 64-year old woman working as an educator at a university but looking forward to retiring in a few years. I love to travel and hope to do more after I retire. I have two wonderful adult children who are on their own.
I'm a great guest - I'm very neat, clean, and quiet, and I leave any space exactly as I found it. I generally to go to bed about 10:30 -11:00 pm and I'm up & ready to go about 7:30 am. I sleep best when it's very quiet and in a dark room.
I'm also a very hospitable and friendly host. I provide a very comfortable guest room, complete with a large basket of information about Buffalo & Western New York. I've lived in Buffalo all my life so I know the area pretty well and I can offer plenty of suggestions. I always tell visitors coming to Niagara Falls that there is lots to do and see just 16 miles away in Buffalo.
I occasionally volunteer for the local Visitors' Bureau, which gives me an opportunity to learn even more about Western New York. In addition to my job, I also run an all-volunteer nonprofit - Global African Village - which I co-founded in 2007. We do humanitarian work in a rural area in eastern Uganda. I'm also a published author.
I enjoy meeting people & hearing their interesting travels stories. I hope you'll stay with me and tell me about your travels!
