I would not stay in this apartment again. My wife and I started getting bites on our legs 3-4 days after arriving. After realizing the bites were not mosquitoes from being outside and they were coming from inside the apartment, we did a thorough cleaning and thought it was resolved. They bites returned 1-2 days later and after catching one of the tiny insects we realized they were fleas. The host Sue got an exterminator and had the place cleaned (her "professional housekeeper" was a young girl who used a paper towel to mop the floor).
After needing to vacate the apartment for a day because of the fumes, we needed to vacuum every day for 2 weeks. Sue did not offer to have a housekeeper do this. Moreover, I'd get a flea on my ankle when walking outside. So we had to check our legs every time we entered/exited and this rendered the outside space unusable.
We thought we'd just deal with it until about a week later when we saw a mouse. After looking around, we realized there were mouse dropping on the counters. Sue, the landlord, said she didn't feel the apt to be unclean despite fleas and mice. She admitted to not using insect spray because of her asthma and there was a mouse trap under the bathroom sink. So the problems were evident to her and she knew insects might be a problem.
I have pictures of fleas, mouse droppings, dog hair underneath the bed, and a giant cockroach encased in a spider web under the bed. If you're wondering if we scammed Sue, just message me and I'll send you the pictures.
It's insulting to be called scammers or having problems with our finances when Sue provided an unclean apartment that we constantly had to clean and deal with for a month.
Our view is that if a landlord provides an unclean space that's infested with mice and fleas and the tenants are inconvenienced with daily, mandatory cleaning, then financial compensation is warranted. Just as a hotel would be liable for discounting a guest's stay if the accommodations were terrible. Sue also had no problem with the refund, so we had an understanding that there were real problems with the apt.
Her words: "Abou 6 months ago I saw a mouse run into the house when I was sitting outside with the French doors open. I hate mice! Neil set a trap & we got him! We kept the trap for the possibility of a next time. We will split the cost of the rentL with you 50/50. You didn't enjoy your time as you planned but you used the place for 28 out of 30 days. We'll go 50/50. If that's acceptable would you like a ck or Paypal? If ck please send your mailing address. If that's not acceptable then let's take it to Airbnb. I have no problem with that!"
We learned our lesson staying at an apartment with no reviews!
