What a quiet gem. We visited the Modern Farmhouse in early spring, and enjoyed Leelanau County a little earlier than the rest of the tourists. The house provided us with the peace and quiet we desired for this vacation. Scenic drives lead to wonderful destinations for food, wine and and nature. The house was very impressive. Excellent craftsmanship and design. We will likely incorporate some of Sean's ideas on our next remodel.
The farmhouse was exquisite! We loved the style & warmth of the home. top quality linen, & the location was perfect as we wanted a quiet get away in the country. Sean was very accommodating as his home was fully stocked with herbs, your basic cooking staples, plenty of wood, etc. We have stayed at several homes & by far Sean was the best host ever. I have never had a host allow us to text him & the few times we did his response was within moments. The warmth of his home & personality made us feel like we were staying in the home of a close friend!
My husband, sister, brother and I spent a beautiful and relaxing week at Sean's farmhouse the beginning of February. Like the reviewers before us, we spent the entire time (and even once we returned to our respective homes) pretending that this wonderful farmhouse and its environs was ours. What is it about this serene place that makes one so wish that it could be visited anytime one wanted. And this sentiment is from us and we ALREADY have property in Leelanau County! Thank you, Sean, for creating such a magical, warm place.
Sean's Modern Farmhouse is an enclave of Leelanau peninsula perfection. My husband and I visited for three weeks this January in the most extreme Michigan Winter weather that the area has seen in over 15 years. We experienced snow storms galore, fierce winds from every direction, Polar vortex (email hidden)d the most exquisite views to witness all of Mother Nature's frosty ferocity from the comfort of the farmhouse with its glowing wood stove, which warmed the house like a belly full of soup! On the milder days, we enjoyed snow shoeing around the farmhouse and its nearby fields (Lake Michigan and the Manitou Islands are visible from the western ridge of the property), as well as cross-country skiing and snow shoeing at a couple of nearby natural areas, Houdek Dunes (less than 10 minutes away on M-22 just north of Leland) and the Leelanau State Park (up past the village of Northport). We also enjoyed cross-country skiing on a new 7-mile trail established between two area wineries, 45 North and Bluestone, as well as the jovial local cider house, Tandem Ciders. I highly recommend Tandem's house-cured pickled eggs paired with a pint of cider in their cozy tasting room after a long trek through the snow. In the evenings after long days playing in the snow, shoveling incredible drifts to build a snow fort for a Winter picnic on one occasion, we turned on the sauna and warmed up our "snow muscles" before drifting off to dreams under dark Winter skies. We made most of our meals at the farmhouse, and found it well-equipped with good cookware and utensils. Sean's impeccable design blends industrial modern elements with clean lines and textures, resulting in a space that conferred immediate welcome and thoughtful attention to detail. Our visit was not without incident, as various mechanical systems misbehaved while we were there. Sean was quick to dispatch people to come fix everything, and was in constant communication with me so I knew what was going on and what to expect, which I feel is the true testament to a great host.
We left craving more time to soak up the unique spirit of the farmhouse, and we look forward to a time in any season when we can return.
As a New Year's and two birthday celebration getaway, our group of friends was so impressed with our stay at Sean's. The house had everything you could possibly want, with everything thought out perfectly by Sean. You can tell he has impeccable taste and understands entertaining and hosting guests. He was extremely responsive and in touch.
Our group (comprised of two graphic designers, an industrial designer, architect and chef) could not stop talking about the perfect kitchen, picturesque views and subtle designed details of the house, and we are picky people! Everything was thought out and felt like it was created exclusively for guests. We felt extremely comfortable in Sean's space, without fear of strict house rules.
The winter visit on Leelanau was gorgeous and with a woodburning stove, sauna, and even a snow sled waiting in the yard, we could not have asked for a better getaway from Detroit. We cannot stop talking about the space, how we wished it was our own and when we will return next. Thanks, Sean!
The farmhouse is a beautiful property and Sean is a responsive host. My family (6 adults total) stayed in the farmhouse for the Christmas holiday. We loved the big kitchen (it really is fully stocked, you don't need to bring any pans or anything) and the cozy living room. There's lots to do—we went to a wine tasting and went skiing—but the house has such pretty views that it's nice to just curl up by the fire with a book or a board game. I would definitely love to spend more time at this beautiful property.
You simply can't ask for more! I'll return to Sean's Northport farmhouse again and again because it's beautiful, comfortable, and exceedingly enjoyable every time. If you like to cook and enjoy a meal at the fireside, this place is for you. Also, I sleep like a baby in the perfect bedrooms of this house. Restfulness is guaranteed. And great water pressure to boot!
This was our second time at the farmhouse and it was just as remarkably beautiful, clean and comfortable as it was the first time. I convinced my family to join me here for Thanksgiving and everyone loved it. We re-visited Tandem Ciders, which we loved, and also discovered a grocery store that we were really excited about: Oryana Natural Foods Market in Traverse City. The house is ridiculously nice and well-stocked, and Sean is a kind, ultra-attentive remote host. Everyone was talking about how they would like to come back for cherry season... This might be the best house on Airbnb?! And I am super picky.
This was my second visit to Sean's stunning modern farmhouse. I, like the previous guests, keep imagining this is my only private abode in the middle of Leelanau. Everyone hits it right on the money. Sean is gracious, responsive, and his home is extremely thought out to make it the best possible experience for his guests. The house is beyond words. I love every detail, and the chickens, are so fun to have around. I can't wait to go back!
We are hesitant to post this review because since our stay, we have been pretending that Sean's place is actually our own private farmhouse. But, Sean deserves another great review so we have decided to be adults and post this for him.
We have stayed at many rental properties in the last few years. The holy grail of a rental experience equals a perfect property AND a perfect host. We found the holy grail in Michigan.
The property: Sean's property itself is in a dream location (rolling farmland, vineyards, beautiful trees, water views just down from the house). The farmhouse is decorated beautifully - the historic elements of the farmhouse have been preserved while appropriately modern finishes have been added. My wife probably took 1000 pictures of the place over the course of our stay, as she kept exclaiming, "This is EXACTLY how I would have decorated this place!" Beyond the beauty of the house itself, there are many unique aspects of the property that make for a true serene retreat - the sauna, the chicken coop, the firepit, the chef's kitchen, the radiant floor heating.
The host: Sean was so incredibly generous and welcoming. He emailed us prior to our visit, saying that he was looking forward to hosting us. When we arrived, we couldn't believe his lack of "house rules" - his basic mantra was, "Enjoy the property and whatever is here." We have stayed at properties in the past where there are so many "DO NOT or We will fine you" rules, that you are afraid to even breathe in the home. Sean's hosting falls at the other end of the spectrum - you truly feel as if you are staying in a friend's house, where the policy is "What's mine is yours."
Needless to say, we are already planning a return visit in the future. Thank you Sean for an incredible getaway!
