The fireplace works wonders and there is a real 4-burner gas stove. No electric heaters or electric appliances that heat are allowed as is a fire hazard and the electric bill goes sky high. If you need one, I can rent a safety appliance heater for US$6/day for the bedroom only which only covers the extra cost for electric. Winter nights especially around Xmas and New Year's until Feb or March can be cold reaching slightly just below freezing point with light frosts at night. However there are very adequate blankets provided all around; just be prepared. The house is warmer than outside.
Descent accommodations for the price. The house is a bit out of town but we had a car so that was not an issue. San Cristobal is chilly so a fire was certainly needed in the evenings. It heated the living space nicely but not the bedroom. There are plenty of blankets provided to accommodate.
We spent 9 wonderful nights at Janet's cottage in SCLC. The cottage is as described on the site. It's cozy 1 bedroom, comfortable, and simple. It is definitely not for those looking for luxury (as accurately stated in the description), but it was great for us as that is not what we look for.
The separate bedroom and living area was nice. There is a good outdoor space and lovely backyard which we shared with Ginger (a sweet golden retriever) and the guests from the other cottage. The fireplace was wonderful (as described by others) and was only a small extra charge for the wood which was well worth it. The kitchen was quite small and not stocked for extensive cooking. We made eggs, soup and quesadillas - but it's not great for anything more elaborate. That said, there's great food in town and delivery options as well.
The cottage is about a 5-10 minute walk to the main Street of Guadalupe and about 15-20 minute (depending on your pace) to the main squares. Walking was easy (though the altitude was challenging at first for us flat landers) and taxis were plentiful and cheap.
Janet was not there as she was traveling, but she was incredibly helpful and responsive via email. Additionally Marta was on site for any of our needs locally. Janet had great recommendations for food, transportation, sites, etc.
I would highly recommend Janet and her property to anyone looking for a great low key experience in San Cristobal.
We stayed in Janet's cottage between Xmas and New Year. The cottage is exactly as described and represented in the pictures. If you have a car or scooter it is ideal as the private gate allows you to securely park your vehicle.
The cottage is a few minutes drive (or a few more walking) from the centre of San Cristobal. All instructions and information provided was thorough and accurate. Although Janet was abroad at the time, we could still reach her on her cell and she arranged everything for us in advance: we were met by Marta, the house helper who although did not speak/understand English was very helpful.
The cottage has no central heating but 1 gas heater and 1 fireplace. We enjoyed the fireplace a lot!
Overall a great stay in San Cristobal. Thank you Janet (and Marta).
Janet was away while we stayed-but was easily contactable and the very helpful Marta was there to greet us and help with anything. Firstly-the cottage is a lot closer to the main drags than we expected-a 15 minute walk. This is great as you still feel you are in a country retreat. It is very quiet and peaceful. The cottage is a good size and faces directly onto the garden. There are two other houses on the property but is feels private and secure. This is our first airbb experience and it was a success.
This is a charming house with a beautiful yard and garden. We really enjoyed the outdoor space, especially the grill and picnic table. We felt at home and comfortable. We liked the homey feeling of being greeted by the cat and dog in the yard as we came and went. It's a great location for easily walking into the center of town and had safe parking for our rental car which brought peace of mind. The host was helpful in answering our questions and giving us tips. Overall we loved our stay and highly recommend this accommodation.
Janet is a wonderful host. She is engaging, hospitable, friendly and has a vast experience about life in Mexico and San Cristobal de las Casas in particular.
She has arranged her personal friend and cab driver to pick me up at Tuxtla Guiterrez airport upon my arrival. Most of the Tuxtla cab drives are not familiar with San Cristobal and it takes them too long to find the proper address. I was brought to her place in no time by this friendly gentlemen. Upon arrival Janet showed me the place, which was clean, spacious and nicely furnished. I was impressed by the view of her lush yard. There was an excellent wi-fi connection. The water at her place was purified and suitable to drink. There was a constant hot water, gas for the stove and refrigerator. Although it is not close to downtown, cabs are readily available for transportation. Matter of fact, the location offers a unique advantage of being away from hustle and bustle. One feels like being at an oasis. I can definitely recommend her place for anyone who is planning of spending some time in San Cristobal de las Casas.
The best part of my stay was also getting to know Janet. She is a very resourceful person and has a wonderful life experiences. After a few days I thought we have known each other for a very long time. It was a real pleasure of getting to know her and calling as one of my friends.
