Only 15km from the Waitomo Caves and 2km from the Kiwi House. You will be staying at a 3/4 bedroom house that is the areas farm house. We are very willing to help if required but otherwise the time is for you to relax.
Set back from the road, on the side of a hill is our farm house. 2.5km from the town, on an easy to get to road. Our place is just off the state highway, and 15km easy drive from the Waitomo Caves.
With views of road and countryside, we have two single beds available in a fairly large room.
Our Farm House is a great place for you to base yourself while you explore the Waitomo area and visit the world famous limestone caves and/or the Kiwi House. The kiwis are fed at 1.30 each day and its quite an experience to see this. Otorohanga has a few shops - a bar and bakeries and others. A good place for fish and chips is Sonnys or Dew Drop In which is beside the Westpac Bank. The Thirst Weta is a great bar with very good food.
There is a supermarket in town for provisions.
The animals on our property have dwindled lately but we have one white duck that comes around the house, an inside/outside dog and two cats as well as two beef cattle on our three acres. I sometimes have foster kittens and cats.
Two single beds with the bathroom down the hallway.
Breakfast is provided which consists of whatever we are having - cereal and fruit and yoghurt, and/or toast and spreads, and tea and coffee.
Wifi Internet is available and there is plenty of parking.
We do not provide dinner. You are welcome to heat something up for dinner.
Our Farm House is a casual home. It is clean, tidy and comfortable but we are not fastidious. We are non smokers.
We look forward to meeting you soon!
Bedroom, bathroom down the hall, lounge, kitchen. Microwave, tea and coffee, fridge for storing food if required. Heat up your dinner meal if u would like to.
Interaction with Guests
Usually I wind down as the day goes by so by evening I am a bit quiet and ready for bed fairly early. If hubby is around then he is more inclined to talk in the evenings. I enjoy mornings so am up feeding the animals and making breakfast and more likely to chat then.
Country area. Alpacas next door, if u would like to meet the alpacas up close and personal, my neighbours are very happy to introduce them to you. There are many trees and green fields and nice views.
If you love to cycle through beautiful trees with the sounds of bird life above you, then it's only 30km drive to the Timber Trail pathway where you can hire a bike and head off along the paths with a variety of length circuits to take. It's signposted and maps are available at the start point in the Pureora forest.
Buses come to the town 2km away. Driving by car is easy and there is a longish driveway to the house but once you get to the house there is plenty of room to turn around.
Other Things to Note
If u r able to it's good if I know about what time you will be arriving. A quick email or text from you means I can plan my day around that arrival time. Sometimes Navman tells fibs in this area so it is important to read the itinerary that you receive when your booking is accepted and maybe you could put my telephone number in your phone.
Please note that NZ roads are not straight and they require more concentration than roads in other countries. It will also take you longer to go from A to B than (website hidden) maps says. Driving say from the Bay of Islands to here is probably a bit much for most drivers as is driving from (website hidden) looks small on the map but its not that small. Please allow plenty of time in your travels and drive carefully.
Just arrive, settle in, chat or relax in room or on the deck, discuss next days activities,go on computer to check out further plans. We go to bed at about 10pm.
Leave by 11am on day of departure.
The room is a bedroom only, bathroom down the hall.
Shirley and Darcy were great hosts. Nice country feel where they live. Bella was friendly as were the kittens and the duck. Breakfast started the day on the right foot. Great base for Waitomo Caves and west coast area around Kawhia...beautiful scenery.
We loved staying at Shirley's and Darcy's farmhouse. A lovely clean room, fresh air and always a cat or a dog to love. Our hosts were charming people who offered a nice breakfast. Unfortunately, we didn't stay long. Arrived in the evening and had to leave the next morning. But I'd sure recomment this room to anyone who wants an inexpensive, yet very comfortable stay.
Shirley was absolutely wonderful! Incredibly kind and she has the cuuuutest kittens wandering around outside. She was so generous she even did a load of laundry for us. Wonderful woman, would love to stay with her again!
Shirley made us very welcome. She has a very comfortable home. She was very obliging. A great place for animal lovers. Shirley fosters cats before they are rehoused.
We felt very at home and would recommend staying with her.
The experience at Shirley and Darcy's farm house was amazing! Lots of fun animals and great people to hang with. Otorohanga is a really small town, 2K walking distance but it was a great stopping point and easy access to Waitomo. The beds and toilet/bathroom are very clean and simple. If they weren't booked the next night I would have stayed an extra night.
Shirley was a great host and wonderful company. Local recommendations and conversations about NZ were appreciated, and the room was quiet and comfortable. A quick drive into Otorohonga was perfect for the evening. I would definitely recommend staying with Shirley if you are ever out in the area of Waitomo!
Shirley was very welcoming and a delight to meet and really helpful over what we should visit. Our bed was very comfy after a great meal in local Otorohanga. I think it was at The Weka - Shirley will know! Shirley has a wonderful assortment of cats, duck, dog (Bella, likes being tickled) etc living outside which made the place pretty unique.
