A lovely courtyard house in Galle in Sri Lanka with a swimming pool. Close to Galle Fort and Unawatuna. Fresh eggs from our chickens. Tropical, green and lovely.
Delightful example of a period house from the colonial era. It is set around a courtyard featuring a pond with tropical fish, turtles and sweet scented frangipani tree at its center. It has been tastefully restored by the Hempel Family who have been living there for the last seven years. It is just 10 mins from Galle Fort and fifteen minutes from Unawatuna and the beaches of Thalpe.
The house is surrounded by a lush tropical garden which is a bird watchers paradise. Monkeys, mongoose, monitor lizards and squirrels dart amongst the trees.
Whether having a lazy breakfast of Nalani’s delicious egg hoppers, or a long lunch of Sri Lankan curry, sambals and chutneys, (all from local produce or catch of the day) this is a place to relax and unwind. The open dining room faces onto the jungle, where women collecting firewood and buffalo stroll past. The house with its internal courtyard and pond is designed along the lines of a Buddhist mandala.
Guests can swim in our 50 ft swimming pool or at Thalpe beach just fifteen minutes away. If you are feeling more active the shops, restaurants and hotels of UNESCO world heritage protected Galle Fort are just ten minutes away while the surf beaches are within 20 to 30 minutes.
At sunset, stroll through village streets, past corner shop vendors and paddy fields. Light an oil lamp at the local Buddhist temple, view a private show of Kandyian dances performing the devil dance under the stars, or just listen to the night sounds of the crickets, watching the fireflies with a glass of chilled wine in hand.
At the end of a long day, curl up in one of the antique four poster beds knowing the house is secure under the watchful eye of Saman the Night Watchman, 2 dogs and Minky the cat.

Hemple House is a little paradise just 10 minutes away from Galle fort. A beautiful old colonial house, filled with comfortable nooks to relax. We were here only a short time and leaving was nearly impossible, the housekeeper and cook Nalini made you feel at home instantly, and prepares some of the most delicious Sri Lankan food you'll eat. Emma who greeted us took every care to make sure we were settled and happy, If we returned to Galle and didn't stay here, it would feel as if we were missing out, can not recommend this place too highly.
We stayed 5 nights at this wonderful house and enjoyed every moment. The house is beautifully furnished and decorated and full of lovely artifacts. It has a gorgeous garden. Eduard is an excellent host- friendly, welcoming and and always happy to provide advice. He made us feel very much at home. The staff are absolutely wonderful. Thank you Emma for your advice and guidance. Nalani, the cook made us some outstanding meals. She is so gracious and charming.
The house is perfectly located. Only a 5 to ten minute pleasant walk into the local town and a 15 minute tuk tuk ride to some excellent beaches.
Overall, we couldn't recommend the house more highly.
Thankyou so very much for leaving a review and thankyou also for being fantastic guests and joining us at both Talalla Beach house and the Charming Courtyard House. We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay and hope that you can come and visit us again in the future! Warm regards
I've spent 10 days in Sri Lanka with my wife, and honestly talking our trip was unforgettable. Thanks to Eduard and Emma who made our trip so nice and so relaxing! They organized our arrival and departure, helped us to choose nice and interesting places to visit. Nalini was cooking delicious national dishes. Saman and Mr. Hapugolo were always helping us with every our request.
The colonial house with it's atmosphere is amazing! The garden around the house makes u feel like in jungle. Swimming pool is very cozy, we spent a lot of time there.
There is a cheap fruit market in 5 min walk from the house.
It took for us around 15 min to get to the Unawatuna beach by tuk-tuk.
Thank u so much, Eduard and Emma, for our fantastic holidays and for ur hospitality!
If u're looking for having good time, relax and feel the real life of Sri Lanka we strongly recommend you Eduard's house!
Charming is an understatement! These holiday living quarters are idyllic in every sense of the word. Surrounded by lush tropical plants and buzzing with wild life, Eduard's place is a haven in any language.
Step outside the front gate and it's located in the heart a local village that gives you a real sense of the Sri Lankan culture. It's away from the popular developed tourist areas but at the same time close enough and easy to get to should you want explore those sites/destinations if you wish.
Not only were the facilities luxurious with a hint of simplicity and authenticity, I was taken care of like a welcomed member of the family. If you wish, you can engage in friendly conversation with Emma and Eduard and get local advice on places to go and things to do or be left to your own devices. Nalini is an exceptional cook, preparing and cooking any meal of choice including delicious Sri Lankan curry. Even the night watchman and the grounds keeper made you feel welcome - both kindly natured.
I couldn't recommend this place more highly!
Going through the entrance of Hempel House.. I was immediately taken back to previous eras of gracious living… you enter this beautiful colonial house through the living room, huge sofas, walls covered in art, books of every description and then into a central courtyard, softs sounds of water, birds and gentle breezes. The bedrooms are off this courtyard; all decorated tastefully, each having a character of their own. They all have internal bathrooms - one has an antique copper basin as a washstand. The dining room is essentially outside with a covered roof, a huge table and a large family kitchen off it. Upstairs there is the Master Bedroom with an outside bathroom. It is reached by an open staircase (where the walls are covered in paintings and textiles) and is beautifully presented and away from the other bedrooms.
All around the house one can sense the owners’ excellent taste in Art and Culture of Sri Lanka. Outside in the mature gardens is a secluded swimming pool line din dark stone with a throne at one end to sun on in splendour.
I have visited many colonial homes but this one strikes one as being the most atmospheric, tucked away in a small village away from the hustle and bustle of village life but close enough to take advantage of Galle and the surrounding countryside.
The owners are very much hands on and nothing is too much trouble for them. There is a cook if you so desire and a night watch man. I would recommend this highly as a place that captures the essence of Sri Lanka past and future.
This villa was incredible, beautifully restored but still rustic and imperfect. We were the only ones staying there so it was a real treat to have the pool and house to ourselves. Our lovely cook Nalini prepared delicious Sri Lankan dishes for us and looked after Nina with genuine care. Eduard was a charming host. It was one of the highlights of our trip.
