Good sized Double room within listed property 'Hempel House'. En-suite bathroom and AC equipped. Sleeps 2.
A lovely courtyard house in Galle in Sri Lanka with a swimming pool. Close to Galle Fort and Unawatuna. Fresh eggs from our chickens. Tropical, green and lovely.
Delightful example of a period house from the colonial era. It is set around a courtyard featuring a pond with tropical fish, turtles and sweet scented frangipani tree at its center. It has been tastefully restored by the Hempel Family who have been living there for the last seven years. It is just 10 mins from Galle Fort and fifteen minutes from Unawatuna and the beaches of Thalpe.
The house is surrounded by a lush tropical garden which is a bird watchers paradise. Monkeys, mongoose, monitor lizards and squirrels dart amongst the trees.
Whether having a lazy breakfast of Nalani’s delicious egg hoppers, or a long lunch of Sri Lankan curry, sambals and chutneys, (all from local produce or catch of the day) this is a place to relax and unwind. The open dining room faces onto the jungle, where women collecting firewood and buffalo stroll past. The house with its internal courtyard and pond is designed along the lines of a Buddhist mandala.
Guests can swim in our 50 ft swimming pool or at Thalpe beach just fifteen minutes away. If you are feeling more active the shops, restaurants and hotels of UNESCO world heritage protected Galle Fort are just ten minutes away while the surf beaches are within 20 to 30 minutes.
At sunset, stroll through village streets, past corner shop vendors and paddy fields. Light an oil lamp at the local Buddhist temple, view a private show of Kandyian dances performing the devil dance under the stars, or just listen to the night sounds of the crickets, watching the fireflies with a glass of chilled wine in hand.
At the end of a long day, curl up in one of the antique four poster beds knowing the house is secure under the watchful eye of Saman the Night Watchman, 2 dogs and Minky the cat.

Hempel House is absolutely stunning and was a wonderful way for us to be introduced to Sri Lanka. Emma was so helpful, meeting us when we arrived and giving us great tips for places to visit. The home cooking was delicious and we would absolutely recommend this as a place to stay if you were visiting Galle. Great location, beautiful house, fab holiday. Thank you!

Just spent 2 days at this lovely restored house a short tuk tuk ride from Galle Fort. Very comfortable bed with mosquito net and good hot rain shower. Peaceful garden setting except for the 5:00 am call to prayers and the Friday night sermon that went on till 9:00pm. Good breakfast and welcoming and helpful staff. Would recommend?
Thankyou for your lovely review!
We are so glad that you enjoyed the House and its lovely setting.
So very sorry about the prayers and sermons. Nearly every where you go there is either a mosque, temple or a school that can sometimes make alot of noise. We will warn guests from now on and put it more clearly on our listing.
Hope you can visit us again! Warm Regards. Emma
We certainly felt like home :) amazing villa just outside Galle! In a perfect place if you want to get away from the touristy fort area and feel the authentic non-touristy Sri Lanka, and close enough if you want to go to the fort.
You can relax by the pool, or in the beautiful inner courtyard with the 2 friendly dogs and the pampered cat :)
Breakfast was amazing, brought fresh from the market :) Nalini will do everything she can to make you feel at home (including AMAZING food).
Welcomed by Emma, we instantly felt at home. Tucked in a small village, off the beaten tracks, this place is a charming and tranquil place to stay. Nalini, the lady who looks after the house, was happy to provide Sri Lankan cooking lessons while she was preparing our dinners, guarded by two friendly dogs, Elfie and Daido and Minky the cat. We spent 2 nights, quiet and peaceful time. Our son enjoyed swimming during hot afternoon while we were relaxing in the dining area sipping a cup of tea. We felt as if we were staying at a friend's house.
This is definitely a must go if you want to stay around Galle! It is simply a dream house that Eduard build out of this old ayurvedic doctor hous! It was very relaxing to stay here, short tuktuk ride to the fort, amazing pool, nicely decorated rooms, and very friendly hosts! Emma, the cook, houskeeper and security guard were all brillant! Thank you very much!!! We will come again!
