Our time at 'The Painters House ' was delightful, a perfect place to relax and unwind after a busy day. Bernard and Faby were wonderful hosts. We took advantage of the full day tour up to the mountains offered by Bernard and it was amazing, wonderful scenery, stopping off for lunch in a local cafe, seeing so much or the stunning country we'd never thought possible. So much better than merely following the convoy of tourist vehicles.
Thanks to Bernard's local connections we were able to visit the site of an archaeological dig when it was supposed to be closed. it was outstanding and a true history lesson, learning that the small village we were staying in used to be the capitol of Morocco.
Bernard and Faby could not have been more helpful , they answered any questions we had, helped us navigate the market which on first glance could seen as intimidating to some, and even gave us a lift to our Marrakesh accommodation to continue our holiday.
The village of Aghmat is just that, a village, so don't expect mad nightlife or a party town but as a place to soak up the reality of a country rather than a walled off tourist trap, its perfect.
Great start but ended not so well,
The room and gardens was fantastic and offered great value for money. Dinners were very expensive but very good quality. The town location is a very quiet one and offers no restaurants or much to see so I would not suggest going for more than a couple of days. Bernards small tour offered a great insight to the local area, walks through secluded villages, archaeological sites, salt filters, and a fantastic 5*star hotel for tea. Unfortunately his big tour was more of just a drive (around 7 hours in the car) through the mountains and not suited to us at all. Communication meant we were not aware of what we had paid for.
We stayed four nights but 2 would have been ample for the holiday we had in mind.
We felt very welcome and had 2 really beautiful days staying at Bernard's home. Bernard took the time and effort to show us around the area and we visited some amazing places we would probably never have seen would we have been on our own.
It is a beautiful place to stay so we can only recommend it.
Bernard and his wife Faby are extremely warm, friendly and gracious hosts, immediately making us feel welcome, orienting us to our accommodation and Aghmat.
We spent a wonderful 2 1/2 days there with Bernard taking us to many interesting places we would never otherwise have known about nor experienced....saffron gardens, a foundry, archeological digs, Berber market and villages, artesan workshops and a great day trip to the Atlas Mountains .
We opted to have our dinners and breakfasts at the painters cottage and very much enjoyed our meals and conversations with Bernard and Faby.
We highly recommend a stay at the painters cottage,.... a perfect retreat from the frantic souks of Marrakesh.
Thank you Terry, You, Claire and Buzz were so kind, it was a real pleasure to have you with us. We are happy that you have been satisfied and we know that it is thanks to you. You are very open mind and that is all the difference when you traval in order have a look at everything with interest. You are welcome as you want and when you want. I have the honnour to consider you as friends. Thank you.
The best experience yet! We had a beautiful bungalow with plenty of room to relax. Fabi- who is French Moroccan with a family history of close association with the royal family cooked interesting and tasty dinners- an optional extra. Bernard took us on tours- also optional extras. We visited salt pans and the local
Archaeological digs that have uncovered and partially restored ancient harman, palace and mosque. The highlight was the trip to the Atlas Mountains. We visited a small village and watched a man make tajines. Bernard can speak French, English, some Arabic and Berber so he could interact with the people we met and he well known in the town. We had mint tea overlooking the dam, passed beautiful towns on the hillside and huge resorts such as the one owned by Richard Branson. On the way home we encountered a road block for a sporting event. Bernard was able to get to the other end through local knowledge. It was a Fantasia. Beautiful young men and one girl in fabulous attire atop splendid horses. About 12 would line up and run in a straight line spinning their rifles which had to be fired in unison. Row after splendid row. What a wonderful experience! Another trip was to the local Friday rider. We bought meat and veggies for dinner that night as well as some souvenirs without the hassle of Marrakesh. Another trip was to a local Berber family- friends of Bernard's where we spent a very pleasant hour. Make sure you go to Bernard and Fabi's for the best experience of Morocco!!!!
Dear Trish, Dear John, You know what?, If you think we were gentle for you, it's because you were gentle for us, and you were so friendly visitors that when you went away, I was sad and near to have some drops in my eyes. It was a fantastic experience for us too. If you want to come again, don't hesitate, we would love that. A big THANK YOU TO YOU.
