The Space

Welcome to our mountain retreat. The house is surrounded by 100’ firs, beautiful forest, and private backyard garden with flowers and fountains. Located in the mountains between Napa & Sonoma valley’s, 1.5 hours from San Francisco, in the heart of the wine country. We are a short drive via windy country roads to neighboring towns of Calistoga, St. Helena, Glen Ellen, Kenwood, & Sonoma, and numerous parks for hiking.

The home sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms, with fresh linens and towels provided for guests, and ONE bathroom. The cozy living room has a fireplace and large flat screen TV/Satelite/DVR, and looks out onto the garden, garden cottage (sleeps 2/counted as bedroom #3), and forest beyond. The kitchen is large, fully equipped, and perfect for dining in and has comfortable bar seating. Just outside the kitchen and living room is a large deck with gas BBQ and outside seating.

This rugged forested location makes Cell Phone service unreliable, and there is NO internet. There is, however, a Land-Line provided for your incoming and outgoing calls…or to make a restaurant reservation. This is an ideal location for couples or small groups wanting seclusion and comfort, surrounded by nature…all within a short drive to anywhere in the wine country.

Secluded location!!...approx 5 miles to downtown Calistoga, in the country, set in the middle of a dense forest, via twisty country road. NO internet, NO cell service. 3 bedrooms/3 beds, and ONE bathroom.
Maximum number of guests at any time is 6 persons. NOT appropriate for very young children NOR elderly persons whom have ambulatory difficulties. This house is ‘split-level’ and has stairs to the front door as well as inside the home. House is NOT baby-proofed and contains breakable art collections. Home owner does not live in immediate area, and needs 48 hours notice of requested check-in date.

  • Out of the way location with beautiful gardens and loads of space. Only 1 bathroom, far too many insects in the house and there didn't appear to be much attention to cleaning.

    Response from Matt:

Guests are instructed to keep doors closed, and screens closed for that very thing, being bugs coming in. The house is cleaned weekly.

  • We had a perfect time at Matt's cottage for my birthday weekend. It rained the whole weekend we were up in Calistoga, but it was so cozy by the fire. In fact, Matt had a fire ready for us when we arrived, as well as wine and snacks - a very sweet touch. The woods around the house are gorgeous, and we loved the eclectic details within and without. We were especially fond of the cottage in the backyard with it's antique mirrors. Even though the hideaway is secluded, the town is a short drive down the mountain. Downtown Calistoga is lovely with lots of shops and delicious places to eat. And wine country and hot springs are a bike ride away. In short this was a very special trip, we all enjoyed ourselves immensely and will be back!

  • Had a lovely weekend in wine country at Matt's home. Excellent kitchen, cozy beds, fun decor, amazingly quiet, and no phone reception/internet is perfect while on vacation. Would definitely go back, heck, wish I were there right now.

  • Our stay here was absolutely wonderful, from the booking process to the stay to the departure process. Matt was extremely nice, provided great details about the house and area, and answered all of our questions. The house itself is so unique, it was really fun just to look around at the cool decor. When we arrives, Matt had a fire set up for us (all we had to do was light it), and wine and cheese were waiting in the kitchen. The kitchen itself has everything you could possibly need, which is so nice considering your a little out in the mountain. Overall we had a great stay and I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in Santa Rosa/Calistoga!

  • We stayed at Matt's place with 5 people, a weekend getaway to the wine country. The place is so amazingly artistically weird (in a good sense) that we spent probably good hour or two just exploring around and reading "?" signs you will find on some of the items that are especially hard to guess of what those items are :) We didn't really cook much but there's a great kitchen setup and a cool knife collection. We really appreciated that Matt left us a bottle of wine, chocolate, cheese&crackers, that was awesome!! Oh, and the fireplace is just great, real wood too. It's a very rustic country experience though, so you gotta be prepared for a water system with minerals and well water, as well as if you dare to sleep in the garden cottage you might see an occasional bug (well it's a forest and it's an outside cottage :) Overall, it was a really unique experience definitely adding to our wine country trip and making it special. Would highly recommend :)

  • My husband and I planned a weekend away in the heart of Wine Country and were looking for a place to stay...we saw thus home on the site and immediately fell in love! The pictures are beautiful and true to light however, the house is much better in person! We love the collector artistic style of Matt's home! We used the kitchen which was incredibly stocked with any kitchen gadget you would ever want or need! My husband is a chef and felt at home in this kitchen...he was actually jealous with the layout and setup! We arrived before dark which was perfect as it is a little difficult to find. Matt's directions were perfect! He was so helpful and informative about the area and even left us a bottle of wine and cheese and crackers! The perfect start for a romantic weekend getaway! We were able to enjoy the surrounding area and then come home to a fire in the fireplace and unwind with a glass of wine! My husband and our daughter participated in Calistoga's Harvest Moon Half Marathon
On Sunday and it was a new family tradition...we look forward to staying again with Matt! Thank you Matt!

  • I rented Matt's place for the weekend with 5 of my girlfriends and had an absolutely amazing time! Matt was very reliable every day leading up to our arrival and actually met us at the house, where he walked us through everything (and even built a little fire for us!) He also left a bottle of wine and snacks and made us feel very at home in his beautiful house with the BEST kitchen! It was so fun to cook there (felt like we were on a cooking show with literally every tool you could ever ask for)... and just admire our surroundings in general. The house was very quiet and secluded and made for the ultimate restorative weekend. I would go back in a second (and hope to again soon!)

We are professionals who love to travel, surf, and Art of all kinds. We fell in love with this house for its secluded forested location, and our ability to weave into it a love of gardening and art. As well as a love of food, wine, and cooking. This house is perfect for staying 'in' and just hanging out, enjoying the garden and fountain, and seeing the sites so close by. Bothe state park is a short drive for fantastic hikes, and amazing wineries in every direction.
