About This Listing
The perfect place to escape from the rat-race! Beautiful three bedroom house on 1.5 acres, backing up to National Forest. Available to rent by the room or the whole house (subject to a maximum party size of 8, with 2 using sofabed in living room).
Located in a quiet and secluded mountain community, this is the perfect place to get away from it all and relax, but there is also great access to ski resorts (Sugarbush 45 mins, Killington 30 mins, Middlebury 20 mins), hiking, fishing, swimming etc. There's truly something to do in every season. Great place to check out the fall foliage from late September to October.
The community also features 2 tennis courts and a swimming pond and is a great place for leisurely walks, snow-shoeing etc.
Burlington, Montpelier and Rutland are within easy reach and the local town of Rochester has a great selection of restaurants, a lively bar and there's often live music and entertainment.
Guests have access to pretty much the whole house, with the exception of the sleeping loft, which we use for storage and ask guests not to use.
Great Hawk is a peaceful and secluded mountain community, conveniently located for access to the amenities in the town of Rochester. We were attracted to how quiet the community is, and there's also no light pollution, so guests always enjoy an undisturbed night sleep!
In the summer it's great to sit out on the deck and look up at the stars!
Other Things to Note
The roads in the community are dirt roads and are relatively steep in places. For visits in the winter, the roads can be snow covered and icy in places, so 4x4 and or proper winter tires are highly recommended. Guests without these can easily park at the bottom of the driveway, but that adds 50 yards for you to carry your belongings up to the house.
The driveway is plowed after every snowfall of 3 or more inches and sand is put down periodically, but we'd still recommend you have a vehicle capable of dealing with Vermont winters!
We want our guests to relax and enjoy themselves. This is our home, so we simply ask that you treat it as if it were your own home.
Joe and Crystina sent us directions as well as helpful tips about the house and area before our arrival. We loved the house which is in a very peaceful area with no cell phone reception. We especially enjoyed relaxing in front of the fire after skiing Sugarbush all day (about a 30 min drive). One small issue we had was getting up the steep snow-covered driveway. It took us a few tries but we made it. Thanks Joe and Crystina!
We had a wonderful time at Joe and Crystina's lovely house! It's even better than we expected, lots of charm with all the comforts of home. Joe and Cyrstina provided great house instructions so we had no questions upon arrival. We would recommend it to friends and family in the future.
This was our second time staying at Joe and Crystina's lovely home - it's too perfect not to return to. Clean, spacious, and just the right mix of rustic (fireplace, wooded seclusion) and modern (dishwasher, washer/dryer); You can't beat it. Joe and Crystina were also very communicative, making sure we were alright throughout some beautiful but icy Vermont weather. Can't recommend it highly enough!
We just came back from a wonderful week at Joe and Crystina's place. The house was exactly as described and Joe was super easy to communicate with! We look forward to coming back another time!
The house is a gorgeous get-away location that greeted us in a beautiful snowy setting. Our weekend there could not have been any more perfect - we felt right at home and it was difficult to leave this beauty behind. We will come back!
The contact with Joe and Crystina was just as great. Quick responses, tons of useful information and just a genuine kindness in sharing their beloved house. Thank. You.!
Our experience at Joe’s place was great! He was extremely helpful and responded promptly to all our questions and concerns. The house is exactly as shown in the pictures (even better): cozy and comfy living room with a working fireplace, spacious bedrooms (both with nice views), two separate bathrooms and a kitchen with everything you can need. The balcony is great, and the foliage views amazing! It’s a quiet place to stay and perfect for couples or groups of friends! Perfect place to enjoy the foliage season: The Green Mountain National Park, Route 100 and Route 7, all close by! We really loved staying here and would highly recommend it to family and friends!
My husband and I really enjoyed staying here. Joe was very easy to communicate with and we had no issues finding the house / getting in using his directions. The house was clean and the bed was comfortable. We especially enjoyed using the stone fireplace in the evening! We visited during the fall and found the property to be close to a lot of nice activities (i.e. Great Cliff outlook hike, local farms/produce, charming restaurants in Rochester + Brandon and some breweries.). If you come during the summer, there's a community tennis court and swimming pond nearby. I would definitely recommend this house if you're looking for a nice mountain getaway.
As a tip, there's limited cell reception in the area, so make sure you have your directions nailed down in advance and bring a wifi friendly device that you can use once you're at the house to plan any activities.

About the Host, Joe & Crystina
We're an easy-going thirty-something couple that loves to travel, entertain and experience new things.
We split our time between the city and the country and love to get up to Vermont after a long week at work, light the fire, crack open a bottle of wine and relax!
We like our guests to feel relaxed too, so we have no expectations and are rarely operating on a tight schedule. We want our guests to feel they can go with the flow and there's always something great to do in any season, whether it's an activity, or just sitting on the deck enjoying the views and fresh air.
We also have a chilled-out three year old labradoodle (non-shedding!) who loves to meet new people and a young son, James (born September 2012), who will make sure he doesn't disturb your stay!
