This little cabin was built just after the Civil War by freed slaves. It has a shabby charm that appeals to most guests, but some may prefer more contemporary amenities.
Downtown Historic Beaufort, 6 blocks from Bay St. Cozy Cabin ideal for a getaway in beautiful Historic Beaufort, South Carolina. Newly renovated back to it's original size (very small).
This Sea Island cabin was built by freed slaves just after the Civil War and is restored with an historical emphasis. It has a wood burning fireplace and a window heat/air conditioning unit. This house is listed on the National Register of Historic places.
The house is very small and rustic--after all it was built by ex-slaves after the Civil War and is over 100 years old. It has a sleeping "nook" rather than a private bedroom. 5 night rental minimum. Conveniently located but not fancy. It has a very artsy and Caribbean feel. In the Northwest Quadrant, a traditional and colorful Gullah neighborhood with lots of kids.
Pets allowed, but please contact us about it in advance. Fenced yard. Walk to Bay Street Restaurants and Bars as well as Boundary Street. About 30 minutes from Hunting Island State Park (pristine beach).
The entire house and fenced yard.
Interaction with Guests
This is our vacation home, so unfortunately we will probably not get to meet you personally.
Traditional Gullah neighborhood in the historic district. This is a vibrant neighborhood full of kids and local characters of modest means. It can be a bit loud with the neighbors kids and outdoor grilling, although it is usually very quiet.
You can walk to the downtown waterfront (about one mile). We have a bike you can use.
Please respect our neighbors.
If you use the fireplace, screen must be in place at all times.
Please remove any perishables from fridge and take out trash to curb (in roll cart); Trash pickup is on Mondays.
Britt was in contact with me before I even left my house - checking on my ETA and letting me know that they had stocked the fridge with some beer and milk which was a very kind gesture. I asked if I needed to bring anything - paper products, towels, etc. but they had all of those things covered.
We enjoyed the personal nature of the home - the selection of artworks and even reading materials, the quirkiness of the house, and the spaciousness of the yard and back deck were all very accommodating. Due to the historical nature of the home, there are only lamps (no overhead lighting), some overhead fans, and a window AC/ heat unit. We found this to be very comfortable. we moved a lamp on top of the sink for when we made dinners late at night (as it got a little dark in the kitchen) but this was no means a real issue. The neighbors across the street greeted us when we arrived and said hello whenever we left/ arrived home for the day. The location was perfectly accessible to eating establishments downtown and for driving to and fro our job site at a local school (where we painted a mural). I WISH that the outdoor shower had been functioning - I texted Britt halfway through the week to inquire about this and was informed that they tried to get it set up in time but just didn't quite meet the deadline. This did not in any way put a damper on the trip and I'd say all in all, it was one of the best beach weeks I have ever had.
we had a great week at your place, really enjoyed the area and hitting charleston and savannah, too. the cabin was cozy and comfortable. we love what you did with the place, and all the art. just fantastic and very pleasant! i especially loved the devil dancing with the female skeleton, and the trio of panels above the dresser in the bedroom.
we hope to return and stay again some day. -ken & jenn
Britt was helpful and responsive, though we really did not need much during our stay! La Cimarrona is delightful - a really sweet little place. It has everything you need, plus lots of fun, bright and artistic touches. We loved it and would stay here again any time we are back in Beaufort. Thank you for a fabulous little midwinter break!
The house was easy to find and the house rules were easy to follow.
The location worked well for my needs and I enjoyed the over all size of La Cimarrona.
Britt is a great host. We really could not have asked for a more perfect spot. We arrived late and Britt gave us a bunch of great takeout options. The center of town was a short walk from the cottage. Many restaurants and Gallery's.
We made day trips to Savannah and Charleston, the cottage location made it possible.
Our dogs loved the large fenced in yard and my wife and I enjoyed drinks on the deck while we watched them romp. The laid back feel of the cottage was exactly as it was presented. We had a great time and hope to be back.
Britt was super responsive in all communications. La Cimarrona was a sweet little house in a historic and beautiful town. I loved my much needed week of decompression!
Britt was very friendly and easy to communicate with. The house was convenient for exploring downtown Beaufort, which was just an easy walk away, and the excellent beach at Hunting Island.
The private back deck and garden, and the front porch were a real bonus.
We were disappointed that the inside of the house didn't match up well with the pictures online. There was more furniture in the rooms, which made it seem rather darker and more cramped. There were also some maintenance issues, although this may just have been because it was the end of the summer.
