Cozy, private, and under dark skies

Guests highlight the stargazing, the cozy design, and how the cottage feels private despite shared grounds
Small on purpose - Tiny Tex is a thoughtfully designed micro-cottage where a pocket door reveals a full wet-room bath, blackout curtains buy you slow mornings. Set on seven Hill Country acres between Johnson City and Fredericksburg, with Dark Sky stargazing overhead, it's the cozy, curated cocoon for solo travelers and couples who want a getaway that feels considered, not cluttered. Recommended by The Hill Country Bon Vivant. Refreshed May 2026.

The space
Embark on a unique journey into the world of tiny house living, where charm and coziness converge to create an authentic Tiny House experience. Our quaint cottage invites you to indulge in a tranquil retreat filled with character.

Take a leisurely stroll down to the creek, a tributary to the Pedernales River, and try your hand at feeding the fish. Whether you're an avid angler or simply seeking relaxation, it's an experience worth trying. As night falls, gather around the fire pit to warm your soul and gaze at the awe-inspiring Texas night sky.

THE COTTAGE - Refreshed May 2026.
Tiny Tex is exactly what it sounds like — and that's the charm. Every inch has been designed on purpose: a full bed dressed in high-thread-count linens - cozy for one, honeymoon close for two. Pull the blackout curtains tight for long sleeping-in mornings. The cottage has a pocket door that slides back to reveal a wet-room bath with a walk-in shower tucked cleverly out of sight. The kitchenette keeps it simple — Keurig, microwave, and a mini-fridge stocked with local "take one, leave one" beers — and with seating for two, you're ready for coffee at sunrise or wine at sundown. Stream a movie on the 32" smart TV, and settle in. Small, but somehow exactly enough.

INTERNET SERVICE
Fast, reliable WiFi through underground fiber internet, not the satellite service common in rural Hill Country. Video calls stay smooth, streaming plays through, and the weather can't touch the connection.

LAST STAND KITCHEN
Breakfast is part of every stay — prepared by Chef Jack of Last Stand Kitchen. A retired professional chef and restaurant owner, Jack most recently served as Executive Chef at Garrison Brothers Distillery just down the road in Hye. He sets it out in the kitchenette before you arrive. No schedule, no clock — your morning at your pace.

Heading to a winery, a hike at Enchanted Rock, a slow afternoon on the porch or working remotely from the cottage? A picnic lunch is a proper mid-day break - no cooking, no errand, just a meal ready in the fridge when you're ready to step away from the screen. Last Stand Kitchen packs picnic lunches on request — fried chicken, chicken salad, a Hill Country charcuterie board, or something custom Chef Jack builds for your day. Because Jack sources fresh and prepares everything by hand, picnics are made to order - subject to his weekly availability, with at least 7 days' notice before check-in. If you're closer to your arrival than that, send us a message anyway — we'll always do our best to put something together. Message us when you book.

OUTDOOR LIVING
Open the door and your world expands. Start by opening the Merlin app to see how many of the nearly 650 bird species the area is known for. The front porch faces the horizon — a prime seat for sunset, especially with something cold in hand. The shared common area sprawls with a hammock strung between the pecan trees, a picnic table for long dinners, a charcoal grill, and a wood-burning fire pit where the night tends to linger. And then the sky takes over — the Texas night above Fredericksburg is dark and vast and full, the Milky Way making the occasional cameo on the clearest nights.

THE HILL COUNTRY
You're tucked into the heart of Fredericksburg wine country, where vineyards, tasting rooms, and farm-to-table kitchens are never more than a short drive apart. Spend a morning hiking the pink granite dome of Enchanted Rock, an afternoon wandering the wildflowers of LBJ State Park, and an evening on historic Main Street Fredericksburg, browsing boutiques and catching live music. Then come home to your tiny haven, slide the door behind you, and disappear.

Guest access
Your stay includes the entire Tiny Tex cottage and the shared common area — fire pit, charcoal grill, picnic tables, and hammocks. Everything inside the cottage is within ten steps; everything beyond it is yours to explore at your pace. The four cottages are arranged around the common area, which becomes the gathering point for guests who want company and is easy to skip if you don't.

Other things to note
The four cottages share a beautiful common area at the heart of the property, including a fire pit, picnic table and hammock. Each cottage has its own porch for privacy when you want it, and easy access to the common area when you don't.

Pets are welcome with a $50 fee per stay (See House Rules for the full pet policy).

WiFi runs on underground fiber - fast and reliable, unaffected by weather.

A Welcome Book is in the cottage when you arrive. QR codes are available for accessing the WiFi network, the Welcome Book and the local area guide.

Neighborhood highlights

You're staying in a quieter corner of the Hill Country, where the day's plan can be as simple or as full as you'd like. A 15-minute drive west delivers Main Street Fredericksburg with its wineries, bakeries, and live-music patios, and a half hour north takes you to Pedernales Falls State Park for a swim along the limestone ledges or a long, unhurried hike. Wildseed Farms' wildflower fields stretch east of town, and just five miles from the cottage, the tiny town of Hye holds Garrison Brothers Distillery — a small-town stop that punches above its weight. For the truly slow days, you don't have to leave the property at all. Check my Guidebook for my favorite local recommendations, including a few quiet places that don't make the usual lists.

We're Amy & Jack. We love to travel but our heart is in the Hill Country, so a few years ago we bought a property and made our dream come true. Jack is a retired professional chef & restaurant owner — most recently Executive Chef at Garrison Brothers Distillery. He prepares the breakfast that's part of every guest's stay through Last Stand Kitchen. We completed a thoughtful top-to-bottom refresh in May 2026 — new linens, restyled interiors, and updated outdoor spaces across all four cottages.
