Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • This was the perfect crash pad for the week in NYC. The location is excellent and the place is private and quiet. We had two in the main bed, one on the inflatable and one on the couch. It was tight but we all got a good nights sleep.

  • This apartment was not as advertised, to our disappointment.
Whilst Phil was ok in regards to communications, it was the bare minimum. The linens supplied are very low quality and fell off the bed, even the bottom fitted sheet. They were also very pilled and had other people's hair in them....gross.
There is no coffee machine, or coffee as advertised, but there are spices etc that can make cooking a lot easier and tastier.
The bed and sofa are incredibly uncomfortable, but the host does provide a double just have to move the table to fit it in.
The gas seems to have a leak, as every time it is turned on, the whole apartment fills with the smell. Every single faucet also leaked, so be careful of anything on the bench when using the kitchen one.
This apartment is tiny, make no mistake about it. The bedroom is bigger than the living room. The curtains in the place are unsewn rags clipped with dodgy curtain hooks.
Also, be aware that this is a walk-up, and the stairs are narrow and steep. Not a huge problem for us, but some might find it an issue. There are also no laundry amenities, but Tian Tian on Essex does a great job for a low cost.
There is a grocery store right across the street, which has excellent prices. The pizzeria and Tequilaria are also fun and very reasonable cost wise.
As we were warned to tell anyone else in the building that we were friends of the owner, I am dubious as to whether the apartment is actually allowed to be a sub-let, but this didn't affect us and the neighbours were mostly very friendly. This was just as well, because the walls are so thin you can hear the neighbour boiling their kettle every morning!
All in all, this is a good location, but needs either a drastic price cut, or serious maintenance and updating/upgrading.

    Response from Philip:

    Hi Janine,
I'm so sorry to hear about your experience. I wish you had contacted me about your concerns so I could have made any changes/repairs right away from you! It seems that your experience was rather unique compared to all my other happy guests and I wish you had given me the chance to give you the type of experience you were obviously looking for.

I feel the apartment is very well described, it is small -- it's New York City! The rooms are photographed accurately and I don't describe having laundry amenities.

If you are ever back in town I'd love to host you again with a free night on me and I'd make sure you have a fantastic time.

    All the best,

  • What a terrific host, and a nice, quite place to relax while visiting the city! The location is excellent, with tons of things to do as soon as you step out the door.

  • No complaints! Philip was organized and made our stay easy and comfortable. Loved the neighborhood.

  • This was a great location and I was very grateful Phillip could accommodate my last minute booking. He was a great communicator and getting keys was an easy transition even after midnight. Everything was fairly clean, it was a quiet building which I loved, and there's tons of shops and restaurants within walking distance. I'd definitely recommend this spot and stay here again. Great neighborhood & great nightlife.

  • Awesome communication, everything as expected, no hassle

  • Fab clean, secure apartment in a wonderful location. Many bars, restaurants, cafes and boutiques close by. Subway station around the corner. I would definitely book Phil's place again next time I am in the Big Apple.

  • Even in the middle of a polar vortex, my boyfriend and I had a wonderful vacation at Phillip's home in the Lower East Side. The apartment is in the best neighborhood, surrounded by great bars, amazing food, unique boutiques and a subway stop just around the corner. Some of our favorites were Contra, Skal, Crif Dogs, Doughnut Plant, 169 Bar, Spitzers for happy hour and the wine bar across the street. We also visited the coffee store right next door multiple times a day.

The apartment is spacious, clean, quiet and well maintained. It was our haven of warmth and relaxation after scurrying about in the cold. Phil made sure we had everything we needed for our visit and gave us recommendations for neighborhood gems. We parked in the parking garage on the same block for about $50 a night, there are other lots that are only a few blocks away for cheaper, but we wanted to be in a garage for the impending snow. We left our car there for the duration of the trip and walked or took the subway everywhere.

I highly recommend this lovely apartment in one of the most charming neighborhoods of New York City. We hope to return on our next visit!

Hi There! My name is Phil and I've been living in New York City for 8 years. I love the Lower East Side and Brooklyn because it has everything you could ever want: nightlife, great food, shopping, and quick access to all subways and sightseeing. I keep a very clean and well appointed home. I'm the kind of Host that will swing by at 9am to bring you a fresh pound of coffee if you need it. :) When I'm not playing Host, I work as a freelance musician and sound engineer from a studio I own on Rivington Street. I tend to keep busy but love to find time to slow down, read a book, or just listen to music. I love travelling, and look forward to visiting India someday... If this is your first time, or millionth time, visiting NYC, you can't find a better place to stay. Feel free to send me a message and I'll respond right away. Looking forward to hosting you on your travels. Cheers! Phil
