  • I stayed in Philips apartment with my wife and two children for 5 days in the beginning of July 2014. We had 5 wonderful days since this is an absolutely great neighborhood with nice and trendy restaurants and bars although we didn't try the bars because of traveling with small children. The apartment was clean and have all the amenities for cooking in (but who want's to do that with all the great restaurants and deli's nearby?). It is a great base for excursions to explore NYC since it is centrally located in lower east side, close to subway stations and bus stops including some of the tour bus lines.
The only downside is that the apartment really is a little bit on the small side for 4 people - especially if you like us are traveling with 4 large suitcases; you simply run out of space and are literally stepping on each other's toes :-/
In summary: the apartment is excellent for two people staying in Manhattan / NYC with great restaurants and (what looks like) a great nightlife.
It is doable to stay 4, but expect it to be crowded and that two people must sleep on a double air bed (the sofa bed is too uncomfortable to sleep in).
As a host Philip is attentative an checks in with you to see if everything is ok.

We would definitely recommend this place to friends and families and wouldn't mind staying here again when we come back to NYC as a couple without children. The only reason we don't give this 5 * is the quality of the sofa bed and that it is a little bit on the small side for 4 people.

  • Thanks to Phil for hosting us in the apartment. We had a few minor issues that Phil sorted out promptly. I would say that 'Beautiful' is overstating the apartment a bit. It is adequate and clean but there are no extra trimmings. The main bed was ok. Even though the apartment advertises a sofa bed, it is not suitable for sleeping on at all as the springs are almost poking through the fabric. I stayed in the apartment with my parents - parents had the main bed and I slept on a double air bed provided by Phil. The air bed took up the whole space in the living room but that was fine as we only went back to the apartment to sleep each night. It is conveniently located very close to the subway which is great for exploring the city. The neighbourhood is not the greatest but is only a ride on the subway or cab to everywhere else! Mum and dad said the air con in the main room wasn't very good, they were quite warm in the evenings (end of June). The air con in the living room was cool enough but quite loud so I ended up turning it off so I could sleep. TV and wifi worked well. Kitchen had a few cups, plates and cutlery so we could arrange some breakfast each morning before heading out. There is also a great coffee shop down stairs. Shower has good pressure. Towels were a bit thin so if you like a good towel, bring your own. All in all, the place was fine and Phil was accessible and prompt and courteous in addressing our concerns.

    Response from Philip:

Hi Karina! Thanks for the review! New towels are on their way along with a new deluxe mattress for the couch. Can't wait for that to arrive!

Sorry you didn't love the neighborhood! I really find the Lower East Side to be super exciting and full of cultural activities, restaurants and night life. But glad you were able to get where you needed quickly.

    Thanks again!

  • Please read the entire review. We found Phil very friendly and he couldn't do enough for us. The apartment was clean and quiet and the subway is accessible without even crossing a road. The Aircon was fine. Despite these pluses we found the apartment was a lot darker and shabbier (frayed rags for curtains?) than the photos but, more importantly, it wasn't comfortable. The fold out bed was especially uncomfortable and that offered the only seating. The kitchen was hopelessly under equipped (2 saucepans, no kettle, oven didn't work, no kitchen tools, no bench) and the leaking gas stove meant that we had to constantly turn the gas supply on and off. A small table and chairs for eating would have helped with the comfort factor. New towels are desperately required. If you don't plan to use the fold out bed nor do ANY cooking then you shouldn't have a problem. I'm no expert on NYC prices for apartments but it does seem expensive compared to my 2nd AirBnB experience on the Upper East side. We should not have dismissed the two negative reviews. They were spot on the money.

  • Enjoyed an amazing Memorial weekend at Phil's. Great location near a ton of awesome restaurants and bars and very metro accessible. Was exactly what I expected for an apartment in that part of town but was a lot quieter than I expected which was fine with me. Will definitely book again and highly recommend!

  • Great apartment and great location. Ideally located beside the subway (F Line) which opens up the whole of NYC. There were 4 of us - 2 adults and 2 kids - and the apartment was ideal for us. The sofa folds out into a double bed or there is an inflatable bed that can be used either. Lovely neighbourhood as well - with loads of places to brunch or eat out. Will definitely stay here again when we come back to NYC. If you're looking for somewhere to stay while you explore NYC this is the place for you.

Hi There! My name is Phil and I've been living in New York City for 8 years. I love the New York because it has everything you could ever want: nightlife, great food, shopping, and quick access to some of the most amazing landmarks and sightseeing on earth. I keep a very clean and well appointed home. I'm the kind of Host that will swing by at 9am to bring you a fresh pound of coffee if you need it. :) When I'm not playing Host, I work as a freelance musician and sound engineer from a studio I own on Rivington Street. I tend to keep busy but love to find time to slow down, read a book, or just listen to music. I love travelling, and look forward to visiting India someday... If this is your first time, or millionth time, visiting NYC, you can't find a better place to stay. Feel free to send me a message and I'll respond right away. Looking forward to hosting you on your travels. Cheers! Phil
