A note from one of our happy condo owners:

Dear Fellow Condo Owners,

A message from paradise! I can say that after all these years. For those of you who have not been here yet -- you cannot believe how beautiful it all is. Pictures? Nice but nothing like in person. When we walked in the first day it took our breath away. It was what we had dreamed of all these years. We have coffee on the patio and one night we had dinner. It is amazing. To Bob and Doris a very special thank you for all your hard work and I do mean hard work.

Again it's heaven and a special thanks to Bob and Doris.

Your fellow condo Owner,

News flash!!! My condo is now under spectacular renovations. You will just love all the special touches my inter decorator is doing. This condo is now a DESIGNER CONDO. Cindy Thau, from Tamarindo, Costa Rica has desighed the whole condo. Go to "comments" below to see what Cindy has to say about her spectacular work of art on this condo.

Hi Mark:

We had a great time in Costa Rica. We liked the condo so much we made an offer on another unit that is for sale.

I’d be happy to write up a review on your listing on the website.

Thanks for a great vacation.

This owners unit is on the first floor and walks out to the beach and pool.

The condo is in a small neighborhood called Surfside. It is on a dirt road (get ready for really badly rutted roads if you go to Costa Rica) separated from the main dirt road by an empty lot. You can walk across the lot to Surfside Market, a grocery store where you’ll find basic provisions and wine, beer and liquor.

The grocery store just opened a restaurant that had a more varied menu including pasta dishes, fish meat and chicken dishes. It also has a bar which seemed to have a few local gringos hanging out the two nights we ate there. You can walk down the road fronting the beach to a very cute, very small hotel, the Club Bahia Potrero that has an open air restaurant.

you can enjoy walking up the beach towards Flamingo to a bar and restaurant called Pleamar, which just opened an internet café. You can get casado for about $3. Casado is the local dish, and has barbecued or baked chicken, meat or fish (generally dory fish which the say is mahi mahi) along with rice and beans and a small salad.

Playa Potrero beach is a couple of miles long. The sand is brown, and the water is very easy for swimming. Gentle waves, no riptides or undertow. This is due to an offshore rim of a sunken volcanic crater, which encompasses the large bay, and which breaks the surface in a few places several miles offshore at the Catalina Islands.

Costa Rica beaches are often beautiful but treacherous due to riptides, but not Playa Potrero. It is considered perhaps the most swimmable beach on the Guanacaste coast. Playa Flamingo, a couple of miles away, is very pretty with white sand, but is more dangerous for swimming. The Catalina Islands create some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the region.

We went to Costa Rica Diving, located on the main road leading out of Playa Flamingo. It is run be a German couple. You can go snorkeling at two locations at the outer edges of the bay, and see lots of colorful fish in very calm, relatively shallow water.

Playa Potrero is located northwest

  • The location is simply amazing, much more beautiful then the pictures convey. We stayed on the ground floor which has a large private deck and steps down to a private pier and seating area. Inside there was plenty of room for 2 of us and all of the amenities functioned as they should. Mark was a great host, checking in with us to confirm everything was in order and kindly allowed us broadband access. We'd certainly come back again.

  • The Waikiki Marina Tower is a mix of hotels and owned apartments and has the basic amenities such as pool, hot tub, tennis court, laundry room, vending machines and covered parking. The apartment is cozy and has amazing views of the Waikiki Marina and Diamond Head through a huge sliding window. The apartment is small and just has the basics including a queen size bed which is soft and you can feel the springs inside. When we checked in, the front desk agent at the hotel was confused about how parking worked and it took some time to figure out. In addition, there was a leak under the sink where we had bathroom products stored which were soaked along with the floor. We told the front desk but it was not fixed while we were there.

We stayed for 2 nights upon arriving on Oahu as we were transferring to Ko'Olina for a week (which was amazing). We were planning to stay one last night in Waikiki on the tail end of our trip to Hawaii and wanted to stay somewhere upscale but had yet to book. When pulling up a Kayak search results, we found the Waikiki Marine Tower also had a hotel which was cheaper ($99 vs. $140 we paid plus the cleaning fee of $100, so really $190).

After staying there and doing my searches of the local area for hotels, although a great view and location, we could have stayed in the same building for cheaper or found more value in other local places.

  • Mark's place has the best view I have ever found using Airbnb. I've traveled all over the US from Hawaii to the east coast, using Airbnb and have yet to find such a picture-esque view as the one I found at his place. Mark is an excellent host and very straightforward. I would recommend him and his place to anyone considering a stay in in Annapolis.

  • Mark has a great apartment that is well located in Ipanema. It's in a safe area two blocks from the beach and is very close to bars, restaurants and supermarkets. The apartment is equipped with everything you would ever need for a long stay. I can't speak well enough about the apartment. And in case you're interested, the AC works well enough, the water pressure is fantastic... and the water gets extremely hot!

We had an issue with the apartment when we checked in late at night, but Mark arranged to have the issue remedied early in the morning and he was very apologetic about it. In fact, he volunteered a refunded of one night's payment and even comped us an additional night. Keep in mind that Mark lives in the US (Annapolis, MD), so he arranges the apartment cleanings with a local company in Rio. I would suggest contacting Mark one or two nights prior to flying out to ensure everything is in order before your arrival.

Everything else went flawlessly. You can jump into this one blindly and you won't be disappointed! We can't wait to go back to Rio, and when we do, we'll be looking to stay in Mark's apartment again.

  • Very nice flat with a funny design (at least, we weren't used to that
next to all commodities, in the main street of Ipanema, gives a quick access to the lake, Ipanema and Copacabana beaches.
I would definitely recommend you find some bicycle you can easily park inside the building.

The host is answering to any question you may have, in a simple manner. This gave us an easy booking/easy access and no trouble.

I would recommend this flat to couple who don't like TV + with a bit of fun in mind :)

  • Mark's place was clean, attractively decorated, and spacious. The view of the South River from the living room was awsome, as advertised.

  • Loved it. Cozy and Great location. Great Choice for Rio.

    October 2013
  • The view of the room was excellent. The mattress was too soft for me. The kitchenette was okay with some small appliances, but I did not cook there because the space of the room was too small. The internet service was not working. I had to lock in to other units internet which had very limited signal. The room key wasn't working for two times. I had to go to front desk to fix the problem. There were two elevators, but only one was working.
Overall, the room was okay because it came with free parking.

  • The reservation was canceled 60 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.

    June 2013
  • The apartment looks exactly like it does in the pictures. Plenty of space for 2 people and everything looks new. Literally a 4 minute walk to the beach and Fasano Hotel. Keep in mind the beach closest to the apartment is the gay section of the beach. There was a grocery store, pharmacy, pastry shop, and banks steps from the apartment. Mark also arranged a driver to pick me up from the airport that spoke English and took me to Christo Rendenter for a fair price.
