Great apartment in a great area. It felt more spacious than the photos show, very comfortable, very clean, slept 6 no problem. Lynn sorted us out with extra keys so we could be independent couples. Roman was very welcoming.
Some old reviews imply that Alphabet City is a bit dodgy - well, it's not 5th Ave, but we never felt unsafe and we got the 14D bus from Avenue D most days. (Tip - bus is slightly slower but much cooler than the subway and you get to see stuff. You need one change on 14th St to get anywhere in Manhattan.) The streets are tree-lined and there are charming little community gardens dotted about. There are loads of restaurants and bars just the other side of Tompkins Park (also safe), and the ones we went into were very good. For groceries, Associated on Avenue C has a decent range and helpful staff (I would give Wholesome Foods a miss).
The only issue I had with the area was the noise from all-night parties on roof terraces - I was in the back bedroom and had to use earplugs (and then I could sleep OK). The rest of our group didn't find it disturbing.
All in all, an excellent holiday.
We had 6 in this apartment & we were a little cramped. There were enough bedrooms, but the room with the double bed was so small that there wasn't enough room for the suitcases & we had to keep the suitcases in the living room.
The apartment is conveniently located to public transport, particularly the bus. We travelled on both the bus & subway & the metro bus was way more convenient. We had trouble opening the doors on street level when we arrived as did others. There is a real trick to this so get the host to show you how to open the doors before they leave you. Be prepared to carry cases up 2-3 flights of stairs - there is no elevator.
The apartment itself is nicely decorated & was clean. The kitchen is very small & not well equipped. There wasn't even an electric kettle to make a quick hot drink. They are not expensive so I don't understand why it isn't there for guests. There is also no hand soap provided in kitchen & bathrooms. In other places we were provided with guest soap & this is appreciated & adds a nice touch for guests. We were also provided with only towels - no face washers or hand towels & no where to hang towels other than on the furniture around the apartment. This is a common problem though - never enough space to hang & dry towels. Some clothes hoists would be handy for this. By the end of the week our towels needed a good wash. There being no washing machine or dryer meant we couldn't freshen them up.
We were left with 4 toilet roles for the week & it was so thin you had to use twice the amount! There were also no spare bin bags.
The queen bed was quite firm, but other beds in the apartment were ok.
The room with the double bed is not airconditioned & to keep it cool the door had to be kept open all the time which is not always convenient.
We've stayed in a few air bnb places now & by comparison this was our least favourite for the reasons outlined. Whilst we acknowledge that New York isn't the cheapest city for accommodation, we were expecting it to be better given we didn't go for the cheapest option that was available in New York.
There were five of us at this location. It was exactly as described. We arrived early and we're promptly met and given permission to store our luggage so to make the best of our day. Once you learn the transportation system you will see how great the location truly is. The apartment was clean, neat and tidy. I will be sure to recommend this apartment to my friends that visit New York City. Thank you again.
We spent 8 nights at this apartment and it absolutely kept its promises. The place is clean and well maintained. The neighborhood isn't exactly posh, and occasional yells from a televised James Brown might might trouble your sleep at 2am from the depths of the backyard, but it's Alphabet City after all!
Key handover was slightly late (which might be a problem for some travelers, especially at night), but very helpful and friendly. And a broken bulb was replaced in no time.. also, we had loads of suitcases and were able to let them sit in the apartment till we left for the airport in the evening. All in all: we'd definitely come back.
Lynn's place is perfect for my family trip to New York. We are five adults and one 6-year-old child. There are enough beds for all members' comfortable stays (No one needs to sleep in a couch). The place feels like a real home, with all necessary furniture and cooking supplies. Wifi is fast enough for multiple-device uses. It's clean and located in a quiet place not far from all the best spots in East Village. I would recommend this place to anyone traveling in a big group and needs somewhere that has a home-feeling!
