BREAKFAST is something we really enjoy. We make our own natural yoghurt, seasonal jams including our delicious Seville marmalade, (made only once every year when the Seville oranges arrive!) PUBS AND RESTAURANTS AT WALKING DISTANCE
There are two good restaurants nearby, THE GRAPEVINE and CLAUDES OF CHURCHTOWN, very popular and you will need to pre-book. The HESKETH ARMS PUB also offers good food & beers and has a lively atmosphere. There are many good restaurants in the town centre that we can recommend.
Transport to and from here is excellent; 5 minutes walk to buses into town and 7 minutes to the train station to Wigan, Manchester, the famous Lake District and beyond. Southport is well served by the rail network going to Liverpool with further links nationwide. Bikes can be transported by train and you can also hire a bicycle very cheaply for about £4 a day in the town centre, it's all flat and easy riding around this area with plenty to see.
WHY COME TO SOUTHPORT?
Southport is a well maintained Victorian seaside resort alongside a Promenade by a lakeside. This classic resort has beautiful Victorian and Edwardian architecture around the town. Well worth a visit is Lord Street, a tree-lined boulevard with many shops and with the newly redesigned Atkinson Arts Centre, the Wayfarer's Arcade. There are plenty of opportunities to sit outside enjoying the many pavement cafes, traditional tea rooms and restaurants. You may want to visit the Inn Beer Shop, selling more than 360 different beers from around the world - a tiny, quirky, independent bar.
The town also has a very good SWIMMING POOL, CINEMA COMPLEX, THEATRES, BOWLING.
A lovely place to walk, cycle or birdwatch but not to swim as the tide leaves behind vast expanses of sand and marshes. Stretching from Crosby in the south to Southport in the north, the natural coast is a beautiful expanse of beaches, pinewoods and sand dunes. Southport beach is a short walk from the town centre.
The large marshes around Southport attract huge amounts of seasonal birds and we are very well provided for with many hides and areas for bird watching in Marshside, MARTIN MERE and MERE SANDS NATURE RESERVE. The tranquil and picturesque forest and lakes of Mere Sands are very interesting and make an ideal place to walk, even if you are not a committed bird watcher.
Southport is known as England's Golfing Capital, most recently hosting the OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. There are 15 top courses which are no more than an hour's drive away and six of them are actually on Southport's doorstep.
CHURCHTOWN VILLAGE is a 10 minute walk away having the great Hesketh Pub, restaurants, quaint shops and antiques. Spend an afternoon at the Botanic Gardens, listening to the Summer Band Concerts.
TRANS PENNINE TRAIL CYCLE ROUTE
The beginning of the trail starts at the sea mark sculpture in Southport. The trail then forms a 215 mile national route and runs from coast to coast. There are also other local trails for walking and cycling with clear leaflet guides to help you.
There are BIKES FOR HIRE in the town centre.

Perfect. Nice Room, Dorothy and John made my stay as convenient as possible, they are just great! Delicious, healthy breakfast! Highly recommended...!
My Mom and I loved spending time with Dorothy and John during our stay in Southport! They're the kindest people and went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. Their house is full of charm and the breakfast was fantastic. Definitely check out the nearby Cedar Farm Galleries (and ask John to help you with directions!) and also north Wales if you have the chance to do a day trip... the walk from Pontcysyllte Aqueduct to Llangollen was fantastic. Great hosts and a lovely area.
Dorothy & John were great hosts, very friendly & warm without being intrusive & we enjoyed our chats over breakfast each morning for the 2 days we stayed with them. We arrived later than expected & needed to rush out as were attending a party that afternoon, they knew this & gave us space & time to sort ourselves, which was very considerate. They also made us feel really at ease about coming and going as and when we wanted and using their home as our base for what we needed to do.
We were in Southport visiting family only a few streets away, so finding their home for us to stay in was perfect for us. We didn't spend much time in the house as we were here primarily to visit family but if we were here longer, I'm sure we would have chilled there a little more & used John & Dorothy's local knowledge on recommendations. I felt as though they judged our needs perfectly & left us to our own devices as they knew the purpose of our visit.
The room was lovely, spotlessly clean with lots of little touches to make our stay really comfortable, including bottled water, tea & coffee making facilities (with real milk from the fridge - a huge plus vs a sterile / chain budget hotel) & a great choice of books which had I had time, would have loved to delve into. The bed was extremely comfortable too & we both had an excellent night's sleep.
The flexibility of what time to have breakfast was great, and when we did venture down for it - what a treat, it was absolutely delicious, fresh & plentiful! We were really lucky with the weather and were able to sit out and eat in in their beautiful & tranquil garden.
Overall, the experience, service and standard of accommodation was outstanding value for money & so much nicer than staying in a sterile hotel or b&b. This was our first airbnb experience & we will definitely we back to stay with Dorothy & John if they'll have us.
Dorothy asked if there was anything else they could do to improve the experience & I can honestly say I can't think of anything. For what we needed, it was absolutely perfect & you were great hosts - thank you.
Dorothy and John are lovely hosts who live in very pretty part of Southport. Their house is beautifully presented. We were greeted very warmly with a lovely cup of tea in the very pretty back garden by the pond. The breakfast table was laden with a wide range of breads/toast, cereals, fresh fruit, seeds, nuts and beautiful home made jams, jelly and yoghurt - a veritable feast. Our room was spacious and the bed very comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our short visit and highly recommend Dorothy and John as AirBnB hosts.
Dorothy and John made us extremely welcome in their lovely home. They greeted us with a cup of tea and a delicious home made muffin and explained the Airbnb ethos . They were very friendly and showed us around and answered all our questions. The room was clean and well appointed with lovely bed linen and a comfortable bed. The house was well appointed and beautifully decorated. The garden was pretty with a clear pond and plenty of fish. The neighbourhood was very attractive and quiet. Dorothy and John recommended a very good restaurant for our evening meal. Breakfast was a treat taken in the garden. We had home made yoghurt and cereals and nuts and fruit salad and toast and home made jams. There was plenty to eat and we enjoyed the relaxed style in which it was served. Dorothy and John were excellent hosts and would recommend their home to anyone wanting to stay in Southport.
Unfortunately due to time constraints we were unable to fully appreciate this fine establishment.... However, it is as described - a beautiful home, fantastic hosts and an amazing breakfast. Would definitely return if ever we return to Southport.
A very great welcoming, in a lovely house. Very well kept, with a super nice garden.
The bedroom is quite large, the bed really confortable. Doroty and Paul have think to everything (Radio with iPod, universal adaptors, hair dryer, cofee & tee and so on)
The breakfast is just awesome, full of fruit. I definitely recommend.
Thank you to Dorothy and Paul for this really nice experience.

About the Host, Dorothy
I grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I enjoy family the most, friends, fell walking, reading, jazz, theatre and (website hidden) and entertaining go hand-in-hand. Travelling is my great life enhancer and hope to do much more of it as I browse at the many amazing Airbnb places around the world. Alas, my bones creak and protest too much. We no longer have pets and we don't smoke. We have two grown-up girls no longer living with us; so it is lovely to have guests.
John is a retired art and design teacher and he also enjoys hosting and getting to know the guests that come to us from around the world.
