Apartment, fully renovated, quiet, sunny, spacious. Fully furnished with luxury fittings, southerly view on a calm canal. All amenities available in the apartment and surrounding area

The space

The apartment is a luxury , early gothic Palazzo. The apartment has been fully renovated, with respect to its original colors, style and materials. You will find that it is an extremely pleasant stay, because it is quiet, very sunny, spacious: the apartment measures 140 sqm (1506 square feet). There are two confortable bedrooms, a large, fully functional, nicely equipped modern kitchen, two bathrooms and large living room. The living room has a fireplace. the apartment is fully furnished with all necessary conforts, and has a southerly view on a calm canal. All amenities are available: 41 inches LCD TV, Bose sound system with DVD, Internet access with Wi-Fi, A/C. I just purchased a very comfortable, modern couch from the famous italian design brand "Living" - you will find it quite amazing.

The area of Cannaregio is very venetian, all shops are in the vicinities: market, butcher, groceries, fish, bars, restaurants, banks, supermarket, pharmacies, all within a 200/400 meters radius. The apartment can accomodate up to 6 people.

Cannaregio is the northernmost of the six historic sestieri (districts) of Venice. It is the second largest sestiere by land area and the largest by population,

The Cannaregio Canal , which was the main route into the city until the construction of a railway link to the mainland, gave the district its name. Development began in the eleventh century as the area was drained and parallel canals were dredged. Although elegant palazzos were built facing the Grand Canal, the area grew primarily with working class housing and manufacturing. The history of the Ghetto of Venice is particuarly fascinating. When on March 29th, 1516 the Government of the Serenissima Repubblica issued special laws, the first Ghetto of Europe was instituted. It was an area where Jews were forced to live and which they could not leave from sunset to dawn. The area was closed by gates watched by guards and up till now the marks of the hinges are visible there. Jews were allowed to practice only some professions: they were doctors, because they were the most prepared and able to understand Arab writings, money lenders, because Catholic religion forbade this practice, merchants and "strazzarioli", ragsellers. However, Jews held successful positions in the city such as merchants, physicians, money lenders, and other trades. The Ghetto existed for more than two and a half centuries, until Napoleon conquered Venice and finally opened and eliminated every gate (1797): Jews were finally free to live in other areas of the city.

In the 19th century, civil engineers built a street named Strada Nuova through Cannaregio, and a railway bridge and road bridge were constructed to connect Venice directly to Mestre. Today, the areas of the district along the Grand Canal from the train station to the Rialto Bridge are packed with tourists, but the rest of Cannaregio is residential and relatively peaceful, with morning markets, neighborhood shops, and small cafés.

Venice is a very quiet city, with no background noise, so loud music is heard very far away. Guests are encouraged to be mindful of neighbours, especially before 8 AM and after 8 PM. In Venice there is a system for recycling paper/cardboard, glass, plastic, so guests are very strongly encouraged to dispose of garbage in the appropriate sites and time slots. Garbage is collected outside the door in the street before 8 AM.

This place is a gem - the location is in the north east of Venice (more residential and less tourists) but still only 20 minutes walk from all the important sites. The apartment is beautiful, the decor is in an oriental style and the old Chinese bed (whilst very creaky) is pretty. However, one word of warning. The apartment (especially the front bedroom and the lounge room) can be very noisy, especially at night. There is a restaurant downstairs and the sound travels through these rooms (for example, we could hear the footpath being swept like it was in the house). It did not bother us, but if you are a light sleeper you will definitely find t difficult. In saying all that, would definitely stay again.

What a privilege it was to stay in this beautiful Venetian apartment. There was ample space for our family of 5 and the location with views over the canal was superb. Away from the bustling crowds but easy walking to the sights was perfect. Our host's friend who welcomed us was welcoming and informative. I must give special thanks to the patience of our host when we failed to arrive at the time I had specified by 2 hrs as I had incorrrctly given the wrong time. Our visit was too short but hope to return and this will be top of our list. Thank you.

This space was absolutely amazing! We had been warned that Venice in the summer was overrun with tourists and crazy busy. The location of this home was perfect, we could get up early and have a few of the canals to ourselves! In fact, we had a photographer meet us outside one morning and she was able to get some great shots of just our family without the crowds! The house itself was perfect, above a lovely little bar (that didn't get too loud) and providing amazing window views onto the canals. Marc's father met us at check in and provided oranges, cherries and bread for our stay - such a delight. Our kids loved the space - there was plenty of room for our family of four. I can not recommend this airbnb enough. We will definitely we back and have already recommended to our friends. LOVE IT!

Great beamed lounge and funky decor , in lovely canalside location but a bit noisy ( above a restaurant with outdoor seating and garden) and price high for two tiny bathrooms, with only one ensuite.

Response from Marc & Elisabeth:
Quite a few non-truths in this review unfortunately. We were already waiting at the apartment when the guest arrived at the airport and responded immediately. Maybe the guests' roaming service was not working correctly? The temperature during this period never went above 21 degrees celsius, we even prepared the beds with duvets because of the chilly weather. When asked for the location of the remote controls for the A/C we responded immediately. There are no mosquitoes in Venice in the month of May. The restaurant closes completely at 10:30 PM and there are only people chatting, no usic or noise. In Venice there is total silence, so people speaking at a restaurant seems noisy... The price is announced very clearly in the ad, the pictures are many and clear. What is not clear is why this comes as a suprise...

This property was the icing on the cake for the most perfect weekend in Venice. Located in the north of Venice, it is in a beautiful neighbourhood, which is much quieter and shared with locals. The apartment was a great size for three couples. There was plenty of extras too; two cakes, bowls of fruit, a bottle of fizz in the fridge, tea, coffee, liquors, CD's to add to the ambience. Absolutely amazing. A short walk to great restaurants, including a great little place right on the doorstep. We happily sat in the sunshine drinking with the locals downstairs. And just as easy to saunter to the main sites, Rialto and San Marco or jump on the vaparetto, which is also a 3 or 4 minute walk to the bus stop. Outstanding accommodation. And great value when compared to hotels that have nowhere near the charm or amenities of this great property. A true gem.

We were extremely happy and pleased to stay at this wonderful Venice gem! Location was perfect for us, and the decor is just one of a kind and Elisabeth's kind flexible help was very much appreciated and we took the boat taxi directly to the house from the airport which is highly recommended. Hopefully I get to stay there again in the future when visiting Venice.

I (Marc) have lived in Venice all my life, studied International Relations and currently working for the UN. I am managing the properties through my family - father Michel and mother Elisabeth are architects that studied in Venice from 1967 and never left it. We know the city inside out and are in love with it!
