The apartment is a luxury duplex in early gothic Palazzo. The apartment has been fully renovated, with respect to its original colors, style and materials. You will find that it is an extremely pleasant stay, because it is quiet, very sunny, spacious: the apartment measures 140 sqm (1506 square feet). There are three confortable bedrooms, a large, fully functional, nicely equipped modern kitchen, three bathrooms and large living room. The living room has a fireplace. the apartment is fully furnished with all necessary conforts, and has a southerly view on a calm canal. All amenities are available: 41 inches LCD TV, Bose sound system with DVD, Internet access with Wi-Fi, A/C. I just purchased a very comfortable, modern couch from the famous italian design brand "Living" - you will find it quite amazing.
The area of Cannaregio is very venetian, all shops are in the vicinities: market, butcher, groceries, fish, bars, restaurants, banks, supermarket, pharmacies, all within a 200/400 meters radius. The apartment accomodates up to 6 people.
Cannaregio is the northernmost of the six historic sestieri (districts) of Venice. It is the second largest sestiere by land area and the largest by population,
The Cannaregio Canal , which was the main route into the city until the construction of a railway link to the mainland, gave the district its name. Development began in the eleventh century as the area was drained and parallel canals were dredged. Although elegant palazzos were built facing the Grand Canal, the area grew primarily with working class housing and manufacturing. The history of the Ghetto of Venice is particuarly fascinating. When on March 29th, 1516 the Government of the Serenissima Repubblica issued special laws, the first Ghetto of Europe was instituted. It was an area where Jews were forced to live and which they could not leave from sunset to dawn. The area was closed by gates watched by guards and up till now the marks of the hinges are visible there. Jews were allowed to practice only some professions: they were doctors, because they were the most prepared and able to understand Arab writings, money lenders, because Catholic religion forbade this practice, merchants and "strazzarioli", ragsellers. However, Jews held successful positions in the city such as merchants, physicians, money lenders, and other trades. The Ghetto existed for more than two and a half centuries, until Napoleon conquered Venice and finally opened and eliminated every gate (1797): Jews were finally free to live in other areas of the city.
In the 19th century, civil engineers built a street named Strada Nuova through Cannaregio, and a railway bridge and road bridge were constructed to connect Venice directly to Mestre. Today, the areas of the district along the Grand Canal from the train station to the Rialto Bridge are packed with tourists, but the rest of Cannaregio is residential and relatively peaceful, with morning markets, neighborhood shops, and small cafés.
At home: internet, TV, DVD, high quality music. A fully functional, modern kitchen. A library. Complimentary bar. A nice, classy, relaxed athmosphere. Sunny the whole day, quiet at night. Pure enjoyment and relaxation!

Venice is a very quiet city, with no background noise, so loud music is heard very far away. Guests are encouraged to be mindful of neighbours, especially before 8 AM and after 8 PM. In Venice there is a system for recycling paper/cardboard, glass, plastic, so guests are very strongly encouraged to dispose of garbage in the appropriate sites and time slots. Garbage is collected outside the door in the street before 8 AM.
We had a delightful time in Venice and this apartment suited us just fine. While we wouldn't call it "luxury", the place was clean, spacious, and convenient (and a bit unusual/quirky, but not to its detriment). It's location is away from the hustle and bustle of a busy street (at least in November), and yet close enough to everything.
We were greeted by Nanie - who played the role of a very nice apartment manager. She went over everything with us and was quite cordial. The hosts were kind enough to provide fruit, bread, jams, beer, coffee, and a host of other things. We also bought some things and left them for the next guests.
All in all, it was a fine apartment in a beautiful city.
This apartment is big, in great condition, equipped with nice and stylish furniture and decoration, and located in a trendy area of Venice, where local people hang out at bars at night, and artist studio just around the corner. Marc's father is a great man as we'll.
Marc's communication was prompt, courteous and faultless. His father, Michel, met us from the Water Taxi that Marc had arranged on our behalf. Fresh fruit, bread, milk and even cold beer and prosecco awaited us, the facilities were explained which include air conditioning, dishwasher and washing machine, three TV's (which we didn't use) and sound system, in fact everything one needs.
The area is a haven from the crowds and we enjoyed a more Venetian experience than our previous trip. A 'Billa' supermarket is close and has a great selection including champagne which was needed as my son proposed to his girlfriend during our stay!
We enjoyed dinner twice at '40 Ladroni' (literally downstairs) where the staff made us very welcome, drinks at 'Al Timon' (over the bridge, down the alley, turn left) - inexpensive and popular.
Our party of five had a memorable, comfortable stay and I recommend Marc and his apartment especially for a family group as we were able to relax together as well as enjoy our own space.
This was a great location, close enough to walk to and from, yet far enough for peace and quiet, you will enjoy Venice from here!
Had a fantastic stay at Marc's place. Easily beats any hotel for a family holiday. The apartment is full of character, well organised, and very clean. Location is great.
My friends and I stayed for 4 nights at Marc's Venetian apartment. Our whole stay was fantastic. The apartment itself is spacious and full of character. The location was perfect, in a very quiet area of Venice with lots of local bars and restaurants yet within easy walking distance to the tourist centre of town.
Would definitely return! Perfect place to stay for a group of between 3 and 6
This was a great venue for me to host my family on a special birthday vacation. Marc and his Father were charming to deal with, and showed great kindness in their willingness to help organise and go that little bit extra to ensure the success of our vacation. Although only "two canals" up from the grand canal.....you might as well be in another world. I suppose you don't go to Venice for peace and quiet...but.... you really do appreciate getting back to your own bit of sanity, to enable reflection on the countless wonders you have just witnessed, in the company of real Venetians.
Many thanks and best wishes for the future.
The place is spectacular, I highly recommend it. Cannaregio area is the top place to stay to be away from the tourists and get to know real Venice.

I have lived in Venice all my life, studied International Relations and currently working for the UN. I am managing the properties through my family - father and mother are architects that studied in Venice from 1967 and never left it. We know the city inside out and are in love with it!
