Stay with a social anthropologist and her two roommates in a friendly Van Nuys home at the end of the quiet cul-de-sac. Meet my three friendly dogs, two cats, enjoy a delicious breakfast and soak in my backyard hot tub.

The Space

I have a home that is at the end of a quiet cul de sac with a large (10,000 square foot) yard and a private gated driveway for parking. The backyard features a jacuzzi with perfect jets, fruit trees, outdoor seating and a firepit.

Guest Access

Available is a nice hardwood floored room (10' x 10') with a comfortable bed with a pillow top mattress, air conditioning, fan, closet, cable TV, a desk, bookshelf, 24/7 wifi and a delicious breakfast. Guests are welcome to use my washer/dryer and enjoy my fabulous pets (three dogs and two cats). Sightseeing suggestions gladly provided.

Interaction with Guests

I love to visit with my guests when I am available. I provide breakfast and enjoy chatting over coffee in the mornings. I'm a well-travelled anthropologist who hosts a variety of salons, groups and activities at my home. Over the summer I will be hosting a Sex, Culture and Society Salon on many Sunday evenings.

The Neighborhood

My house is at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in a friendly Van Nuys neighbhood. Nearby are wonderful and inexpensive markets and restaurants featuring food from Mexico, El Salvador, Japan, Africa, Thailand, Armenia and Viet Nam.

Getting around

We are an easy walk to a variety of bus lines on Sepulveda Blvd, Van Nuys Blvd and Vanowen Street that service the city and enable quick access to the Orange Line of the Metro System. I am happy to pick up and drop off guests at the Van Nuys Flyaway (LAX airport shuttle bus), the Van Nuys Amtrak/Metrolink Station and the Sepulveda Orange Line Station.

Other Things to Note

In compliance with laws of Los Angeles I pay the 14% travellers occupancy tax. This fee is built into the guest fee I charge.

Check In
  • A good, relatively secluded location at the end of a street.

I arrived relatively late and left the next morning, but I was still able to have a 30 minute chat with Leanna about a wide variety of topics. I enjoyed visiting with her.

The room was perfectly fine. Plenty big and had all of the necessities. I was pleasantly surprised that she offered to make breakfast for me. Apparently I didn't read her Airbnb listing very closely, because I had no idea this was included! :-)

She had some other guests, but since I was only there for a very brief time, I only briefly met the others.

Will certainly check into this location next time I am in town.

  • Leanna is a very friendly woman, she picked me up at the Van Nuys bus station and provided me with alot of information about LA. She is very knowledgeable in her field of work and it was very interesting to talk to her.

Originally we had the room in the house but was switched to the room in the garage (because it was bigger). I wasn't too sure about the specifications of the room but it was great that there was a mini tv. It can get noisy at times because outdoor noises can get through the wooden garage door easily. Leanna has two friendly dogs and I suggest to those who stay here that they be animal or dog lovers. Leanna was out of town before I arrived and she had a friend to clean the place and so perhaps that was the reason why it was not as clean as I expected. Nevertheless it is an extremely good deal, considering the price! Echo was a really cool cat and I'll surely miss her!

I would definitely recommend Leanna's place for other budget travelers!

  • Leanna was a wonderful host. She replied to my messages quickly, and she didn't mind answering all my questions (I had many). The home was very cozy and I loved my room! It had everything I needed for my one week stay - big bed, full closet with hangers, dresser, TV w/ VCR, a writing desk, power strip, heater, AC, and even a small bookshelf.

Breakfast was included in the price. Leanna set aside many things for breakfast, and even posted a list on the frig so it was easy to know what was OK to take and what was not. She had many pots and pans that I could use to prepare food, so that was very convenient. I thoroughly enjoyed eating my breakfast outdoors on the patio.

There were also two bathrooms in the house, so we never had a problem.

I had a great time in her home. It really felt like home. I definitely would do it again!

  • Leanna's place feels like home. Dogs and a very friendly, cool cat and lots of good people. Leanna has something uplifting to say, always. She's very intelligent and personable and comfortable to be around. In the future, when I'm in LA I will definitely see if her place is available again.

  • Leanna was a warm and welcoming host. She's an interesting person and good conversationalist. Staying at La Case de Pensamiento is like staying with a family and a welcome break from the impersonal nature of hotels and motels.
