It is also possible to take an organized day trip from Akureyri to the island of Grimsey, which straddles the Arctic Circle. One of the most extraordinary aspects of Akureyri is its warm climate. Although its sits only 60 miles from the Arctic Circle, it has some of the best weather in Iceland. Summer temperatures frequently range in the high 20-°C!
There are no particular rules except we expect our guests to treat our house with respect. There is no food left in the fridge. There are clean sheets but the guests are expected to make their beds themselves.
The house has a lovely living room, with the floor-to-ceiling windows giving you a stunning view across the fjord to Akureyri and lots of light flooding in. We spent evenings in the hot tub, looking out to the snow capped mountains, and were lucky enough to catch the Northern Lights. (n.b. Icelandic hot tubs are different to ours - you empty them out each time, like a bath, so don't panic that it's empty when you arrive!) Gunnar was very responsive, and called to check we'd settled in ok, which was very much appreciated. The house is a little tricky to find on Google Maps, so make sure you print off the pic in the gallery where Gunnar's marked its location.
The house is great, very well located and easy. We found all we needed in the house to enjoy our stay and Gunnar was always available to answer our questions.
Akureyri and places around (Husavik, Myvatn, Detifoss...) were very interesting and easy to reach ( and the road is beautiful).
Thank you Gunnar !
Gunnar was very helpful and responsive. The house was gorgeous, with amazing views.
Gunnar was a fantastic host, he was very helpful, polite and contactable at all times. The house itself was clean and spacious and the views were spectacular. The main issues where that the hot tub was broken (previous occupants had burst a pipe) and the wet room was completely impractical. Apart from that we enjoyed our stay in his home and would definitely recommend it.
The property is in an amazing location, the views are stunning.
It was easy to find even in the snow and dark. The key holder was frozen closed, but with advice from Gunnar over the phone we managed to get in.
We had some issues with the heating being turned off by a previous guest, even though Gunnar wasn't in town he was very helpful sending people round to look into this issue. Sadly as it started to warm up it was time for us to leave, but even with this issue we really enjoyed our stay.
What an amazing place! We loved our stay at Gunnar's place and wish we could have stayed for longer! Not many hosts send spare keys to you via plane (from Reykjavik to Akureyri) within an afternoon! Perfect experience
