La'al Yam is a delightful cosy cottage with wonderful views and full of charm. It is surrounded by gardens full of wildlife. A place for rest and relaxation, where you can completely unwind. It is the East wing of Hylands, decorated in sympathy with Arts and Crafts principles. Quality finishes and materials throughout, using local suppliers and crafts people.
It is 12 minutes walk from Kendal's many independent shops and restaurants and 5 minutes walk to our local pub the 'Rifleman's Arms'.
The space
You will arrive at La'al Yam at Hylands up a wooded driveway bordered with large sculptures we have made.
At the top of the drive you can park, from there you can see La'al Yam's open oak porch, just beyond the wood shed. The wood shed is for your use and will provide you with plenty of wood for the wood burning stove. There is a shelf here where surplus eggs and vegetables are placed for you to help yourself to. The area outside the porch is enclosed by a curved stone wall, that provides a sitting space for you to use. You can linger in the porch on an oak bench to soak up the late afternoon sun whilst you remove your muddy boots. From the porch you enter the inner hall with original tiled floors. This was once the house scullery and wash rooms, so the tiled floor slopes to the doorway. The inner hall is surrounded by four beautiful original oak doors which lead you into the cloakroom, kitchen, sitting room and shower room.
The kitchen faces south and has views through the acer to the wildlife pond. A bespoke yew kitchen made by local craftsmen from timber we have felled. The pantry is a useful store with original shelves and gives plenty of storage space for food as well as a freezer and a microwave. The light over the table was made by a local sculptor Charlie Whinney.
The sitting room, with wood burning stove also faces south, with view of the garden. The carpet is made from wool from our local Herdwick sheep.
The shower room is fresh and new with a beautifully tiled large shower.
The main double bedroom is above the sitting room and kitchen and has space to sit and rest away from the rest of the house. It is a very peaceful light room. The second bedroom is a twin room with beautiful French brass beds. This room overlooks the entrance porch and your outside eating area and beyond to the back meadow and a wooded area where we feed the birds and our chickens enjoy foraging.
All our bedding is William Morris soft cotton with feather duvets and pillows. The double bed has a heated blanket in the winter. All the wallpapers are William Morris too.
As an architect and sculptor we hope our blended skills bring La'al Yam a contemporary appreciation of arts and crafts to help you enjoy your stay.

The space, table and benches around the entrance to La'al Yam is for your use.
The meadow and wood to the back of the house are shared with us and other guests and can be used for quiet sitting or a rustic BBQ or camp fire. Also shared is our new wild life pond, do sit around it, it gets the best of the evening sunshine, but do take care not to get too close to the water!
We built the pond on a former grass tennis court in 2023.

The Atelier, Apple House and Tethera Nook are other self contained holiday lets we have at Hylands. All are on Airbnb.
The gardens are open for charity as part of the Nation Garden Scheme (NGS) on two days each year. We have other gardening groups visit a few times a year.
From time to time to time we run gardening and painting workshops. We would let you know (invite you to join in) if an event was planned during your stay.
