Our social and vibrant hostel in downtown SF is the place to stay! We invite travelers and adventurers of all ages, from all corners of the globe, to rest their heads at this historic hostel in the heart of San Francisco. We pride ourselves on creating a community vibe and a space that encourages guests to gather together, exchange travel stories, and get to know one another.

The space
This room has one comfy full-size bed that can hold up to two people. Rooms also come equipped with a 32” media monitor, complete with free media. There are five single occupancy bathrooms on each floor, each with complimentary essential oil organic lavender shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel. We also have a free sauna on the top floor and massage chairs in the lobby for your every relaxation need.
Our Grand Ballroom is the heart of the hostel where people play music, make friends and unforgettable memories, fall in love with the city and each other, and raise glasses in celebration. The ballroom, where musicians are always invited to play, has a pool table, ping pong table, books, games, and complimentary coffee and tea throughout the day. We provide free wi-fi throughout the hostel and also free computer use in our internet lounge. Just off of the ballroom we have a fully equipped kitchen that is open 24 hours a day for you to use. We provide a guest fridge for you to store food, liquor, whatever you want!
Every morning in the ballroom we offer a free breakfast that consists of bagels, fresh fruit, organic oatmeal, yogurt, eggs, OJ, coffee and tea. We have free dinners every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We invite guests to help cook, but of course you don’t have to cook to eat!
After participating in our nightly activity, such as our famous Pub Crawl or Beer Olympics, you can get comfortable in our funky dorm rooms or cozy private rooms and enjoy our delicious free meals. If you have the time, hop on our “hostel on wheels” for a famous Green Tortoise Adventure Travel trip to Yosemite, Baja, Alaska, Burning Man, and other US National Parks! These are just a few of the reasons the Tortoise has become a legend.

Where you’ll be

San Francisco, California, United States

Our hostel is located in the culturally rich neighborhood of North Beach (SF’s Little Italy) and borders America’s largest Chinatown. We have great food and great fun on all sides! The rhythm of the Beat poets flow in the streets outside their regular hangouts, like Vesuvio, and City Lights Bookstore, just a couple of blocks away. And we are only a 20 minute walk from the famous Fisherman’s Wharf.

There's one word that fully encompasses the experience of staying at our hostel: Community. At first glance, one might presume that the endgame of all hostels is to create a sense of firm familiarity among guest and staff alike, but with us, you can feel it. With a full roster of events that are ongoing, all inclusive in both experience and price, and a design purposefully conducive to the gathering of folks all around the world, we are dedicated to establishing a world reaching community that you feel while you are here, and long after your stay. Our adventure travel company launched in 1974 with the purpose of bringing together folks who share the same single ambition: Travel! For the next twenty years, our buses brought these wandering souls to experience places as close as Santa Barbara and Monterey, to destinations as far as Alaska, New York City, and even Costa Rica. As incredible as these destinations are, we believe it is more about the journey than the destination. In the 1990’s we opened our San Francisco hostel to offer a haven for travelers to settle, rest, and of course party! In opening our hostel, we hoped to create a sense of community and create a haven where these newly found friendships would flourish. We believe that bringing people together to create a community is the true purpose of a hostel. Community. That’s what we’re about. Stop by and experience it for yourself.
