  • Think of this B&B the same way you think of your favorite house shoes.... comfy... unpretentious... familiar... relaxing... The facilities are nice, cleanliness is top-notch and the horse property is beautiful... but what makes a B&B memorable are the people.... and you won't find friendlier, more interesting people than Deanie, her husband Ken and their family. She will welcome you like a long-absent daughter / son and you'll probably find cookies waiting in your room. (Fair warning!- they are delicious...so eat them immediately or they WILL disappear! She's all about "fresh", so she will "toss your cookies" if you save them for the next day!)
She is from Newfoundland (per Deanie- pronounced Newfn-LAND'... "like GRAND") and her husband Ken is English, so bountiful breakfasts are just part of the experience... always unique, always delicious. You COULD choose to just have cereal or fruit salad... but don't... you'd miss a real treat.
We always had delightful conversations with our hosts and fellow guests while thoroughly enjoying our morning meal. We often enjoyed picking up the conversation that evening over a newly found bottle of local wine.

This is a great place from which to discover the surrounding Shenandoah Valley. It is beautiful... reminding us of rural Europe with rolling green fields and forests of every hue. There is great hiking and sightseeing in the national forests, and many a winery and craft brewery where you can sample their offerings.
The vibrant town of Staunton (pronounced Stanton or they'll know you're "not from these parts") is just down the road, and not to be missed. It's large enough to have a downtown with interesting shops, a trolley-bus, wonderful restaurants, an authentic Shakespeare Theatre and a tourist office... but it doesn't feel at all touristy. You are immediately struck with the stately architecture, the number of beautiful old homes, and the livability of this successful small town.

Whether you're looking for a relaxing weekend or a week or two of exploring, these are the people and the place you're looking for! We had a great time!

Thanks for your very kind words, Jim and Uli. You should have been a writer! We look forward to the next time we can get together and perhaps that will be when Jessica comes back? We'd love to have you all again, and with Ellie, of course!
Ken got a new puppy for his recent birthday. Oh, he says thanks for the card...so very thoughtful of you! The puppy came to us in a roundabout way as a foster but soon won his heart and is now in her permanent home with us. She is an 8 week old Pitbull/American Bulldog cross and is as sweet as can be. You'll meet her soon, I hope.
    Love to you all,
    Deanie, Ken and Lydia

  • This was our first time at Penmerryl Farm but won't be our last. The farm is absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed an amazing breakfast of bacon, apple pancakes, fruit with yogurt and yummy cheesy potatoes. Our boys had fun playing pool and ping pong. Our room was clean and cozy. Deanie, Ken and Lydia made us feel right at home. We hope to return soon!!

  • What a perfect, relaxing weekend in a lovely part of Virginia. The accommodations were great, clean, and affordable, but the best part about Penmerryl is the hosts! Deanie and her family were incredibly welcoming and fun. We spent several hours each morning having interesting conversations over delicious breakfasts. It was just what we needed, and we will definitely return. This would be a great place to come with a group of friends as well. There's plenty to do in the surrounding area- hiking trails, visiting Staunton, and exploring the Penmerryl property, we ran out of time. Another major bonus is the dog friendly nature of the property-- our dog had a blast.

Thanks, Therese and Devin, for your kind words. We loved having you and really would be happy to have you back with some of your friends and perhaps some of their dogs as well.
    Until next time...
    Cheers,

  • What a fantastic place to stay! Feels far off the beaten path, but it's still very easy to get to. We spent a weekend here and enjoyed the cozy down to earth atmosphere and bar-none hospitality. We walked in the woods, got to know the horses, and lounged about with resident dogs taking in the turning of the seasons! Breakfast is a great opportunity to learn more about Penmyrrl and the guests--it's easy to loose yourself in conversation. Stauntan is just a jaunt up the road with a beautiful historic down town.

A wonderful weekend we'd love to repeat

  • My boyfriend and I had an excellent weekend at Penmerryl Farm. Deanie was an exceptional host. There were cookies waiting for us in the room when we arrived and she really had thought of everything. Breakfast was delicious and everyone is friendly and relaxed because the place is so nice. Our weekend ended up getting rained out, but with Deanie's advice we still had a great time. I highly recommend Penmerryl Farm. It's a great location and a short drive to many nice towns, wineries, and hiking trails. This was our first Air bnb experience, and it was a great one!

  • Penmerryl Farm was the perfect vacation spot. It's beautiful and has lots to do -- swimming, tennis, canoeing, easy access to wineries and great restaurants. Deanie makes a fantastic breakfast. Thanks for hosting us!

  • We cannot wait to go back. Even though it is under an hour from our house, it was the perfect get away. Myself, my husband our two children and our dog were treated like family. The farm is spectacular, the horses are amazing and Deanie and family are some of the most gracious people I have ever met. This is the perfect place to truly relax, the children can run free and be endlessly entertained by playing pool swimming, and air hockey. It is actually possible to sit and read by the pool! We chose it because of all of the other reviews, and we were not disappointed. We stayed in one of the rooms, but next time we will rent a cabin with friends and come for the while weekend. It is a magical place.

  • My son and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Deanie and her family were most gracious hosts with who made us feel so comfortable and at home after a long drive. We appreciated Deanie e-mailing us before our stay and giving us excellent directions. The country breakfast was delicious, especially the potatoes with cheese. We look forward to returning next year on our way back from fiddling camp. Next time, we will be sure to extend our visit so that we can relax by the pool, and my son can play with the pups! Thank you so much for your generous hospitality.

  • We arrived at Penmerryl Farm on a Thursday afternoon. This is a working farm, and the chance of the family being tied up with farm business is good. We arrived to find a large whiteboard with our names and room number. We went right to the room, which was modern and clean, and found a plate of cookies just waiting for us!

Lydia, Deanie and Ken's daughter, arrived a minute or two later and gave us a quick tour of the B & B. Our room was poolside; the pool was refreshing, and there were plenty of chairs, loungers, tables, and even grills for the guests' use. There was also a game room complete with pool table, air hockey, and TV.

The two most noteworthy things are the family and breakfast. Deanie and family made us feel very welcome and made sure we lacked for nothing. The sat around the pool in the early evening with the guests being sure that we all got to know one another.
Deanie's breakfasts were amazing! Be sure to try the peach pecan French toast!

We would definitely stay here again!

  • All I can do is echo all the good things that others have said about Penmerryl Farm. Deanie and Ken were wonderful, hospitable hosts and we very much enjoyed our stay with them. The room had everything we needed (except for another room to get some space from the kids...maybe we'll look at booking one of their cabins next time!), the breakfasts were scrumptious and abundant. There was something for every taste, and if not, Deanie whipped up something else with a smile. The kids LOVED spending time in the pool which was right outside our door, making friends with the animals and playing in the game room when we weren't out exploring. Deanie was terrific about checking in with us throughout the day to make sure we were taken care of. We had access to the kitchen for whatever we might need. It was definitely a home away from home and we'd be thrilled to make another visit. Thank you!

About
My husband, Ken, and I have raised our children here at Penmerryl and really enjoy sharing this wonderful place with others. We love to meet and host new people from all walks of life and all parts of the globe. I cook for and take care of my guests just like my family. I am originally from St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada and Ken is from London, England. We spent 7 years living on a boat and sailing before coming ashore to raise our family,
