This was a great experience. I ended up reserving 3 rooms for my two brothers and our families, and it was wonderful. The views of the mountains while walking next to the horses was wonderful, and all of the children enjoyed. There was fire chimney with wood for burning outside in the evening. Breakfast was great as well. Deanie was called away on business, but the team made us feel at home. We will be coming again!
Deanne was a very warm and enthusiastic host. We felt like old friends right off the bat! She provides a very comfortable setting. So much so that we lingered several hours after breakfast enjoying getting to know each other better. We left vowing to keep in touch with each other and look forward to meeting Ken. Hopefully we can catch up to each other soon.

We felt very welcome and loved everything about the farm I loved it so much that I'm going back next week and taking my daughter with me for a girls trip. We are huge animal lovers so we really enjoyed the interaction with the horses and dogs. I also love photography so the beautiful views were perfect. Can't forget the delicious breakfast , what a great bonus!
Think of this B&B the same way you think of your favorite house shoes.... comfy... unpretentious... familiar... relaxing... The facilities are nice, cleanliness is top-notch and the horse property is beautiful... but what makes a B&B memorable are the people.... and you won't find friendlier, more interesting people than Deanie, her husband Ken and their family. She will welcome you like a long-absent daughter / son and you'll probably find cookies waiting in your room. (Fair warning!- they are delicious...so eat them immediately or they WILL disappear! She's all about "fresh", so she will "toss your cookies" if you save them for the next day!)
She is from Newfoundland (per Deanie- pronounced Newfn-LAND'... "like GRAND") and her husband Ken is English, so bountiful breakfasts are just part of the experience... always unique, always delicious. You COULD choose to just have cereal or fruit salad... but don't... you'd miss a real treat.
We always had delightful conversations with our hosts and fellow guests while thoroughly enjoying our morning meal. We often enjoyed picking up the conversation that evening over a newly found bottle of local wine.
This is a great place from which to discover the surrounding Shenandoah Valley. It is beautiful... reminding us of rural Europe with rolling green fields and forests of every hue. There is great hiking and sightseeing in the national forests, and many a winery and craft brewery where you can sample their offerings.
The vibrant town of Staunton (pronounced Stanton or they'll know you're "not from these parts") is just down the road, and not to be missed. It's large enough to have a downtown with interesting shops, a trolley-bus, wonderful restaurants, an authentic Shakespeare Theatre and a tourist office... but it doesn't feel at all touristy. You are immediately struck with the stately architecture, the number of beautiful old homes, and the livability of this successful small town.
Whether you're looking for a relaxing weekend or a week or two of exploring, these are the people and the place you're looking for! We had a great time!
Thanks for your very kind words, Jim and Uli. You should have been a writer! We look forward to the next time we can get together and perhaps that will be when Jessica comes back? We'd love to have you all again, and with Ellie, of course!
Ken got a new puppy for his recent birthday. Oh, he says thanks for the card...so very thoughtful of you! The puppy came to us in a roundabout way as a foster but soon won his heart and is now in her permanent home with us. She is an 8 week old Pitbull/American Bulldog cross and is as sweet as can be. You'll meet her soon, I hope.
Love to you all,
Deanie, Ken and Lydia
This was our first time at Penmerryl Farm but won't be our last. The farm is absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed an amazing breakfast of bacon, apple pancakes, fruit with yogurt and yummy cheesy potatoes. Our boys had fun playing pool and ping pong. Our room was clean and cozy. Deanie, Ken and Lydia made us feel right at home. We hope to return soon!!
What a perfect, relaxing weekend in a lovely part of Virginia. The accommodations were great, clean, and affordable, but the best part about Penmerryl is the hosts! Deanie and her family were incredibly welcoming and fun. We spent several hours each morning having interesting conversations over delicious breakfasts. It was just what we needed, and we will definitely return. This would be a great place to come with a group of friends as well. There's plenty to do in the surrounding area- hiking trails, visiting Staunton, and exploring the Penmerryl property, we ran out of time. Another major bonus is the dog friendly nature of the property-- our dog had a blast.
What a fantastic place to stay! Feels far off the beaten path, but it's still very easy to get to. We spent a weekend here and enjoyed the cozy down to earth atmosphere and bar-none hospitality. We walked in the woods, got to know the horses, and lounged about with resident dogs taking in the turning of the seasons! Breakfast is a great opportunity to learn more about Penmyrrl and the guests--it's easy to loose yourself in conversation. Stauntan is just a jaunt up the road with a beautiful historic down town.
A wonderful weekend we'd love to repeat

My husband, Ken, and I have raised our children here at Penmerryl and really enjoy sharing this wonderful place with others. We love to meet and host new people from all walks of life and all parts of the globe. I cook for and take care of my guests just like my family. I am originally from St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada and Ken is from London, England. We spent 7 years living on a boat and sailing before coming ashore to raise our family.
And now that time has come to step back a little from Penmerryl and go back to the sea for a while, and we are so happy to introduce to you our new Co-host here at Penmerryl, Gammon Castellvi. Gammon is originally from Venezuela and so is fluent in Spanish. She is also a fabulous cook and will take excellent care of guests at breakfast! Another huge plus in having Gammon on board is that she is an accomplished Equestrienne, with years of horse experience and the ability to share her knowledge with guests. If any would like to add a horse experience to their stay here at Penmerryl, that can certainly be arranged with prior notice.
