Mona Lisa
The Italian thief, Vincenzo Perugia, was working as a glazer in the Louvre. He kept the painting under his bed in Paris for two years. When he returned to Italy in 1913, he offered the Mona Lisa for sale to a Florence antique dealer called Geri, who informed the authorities. During the subsequent trial, Perugia maintained that his motive was patriotism. He wanted to take the painting back to its spiritual home, although it was Léonard de Vinci himself who sent it to François Ist. The thief was sentenced to one year in prison.
