Designed as a nod to my heritage, Skoghus ('forest house' in Norwegian) was crafted for relaxation, and reconnecting with nature. The treehouse sits in the centre of a Scottish Highland cattle farm, with pasture and forest in all directions. From the yard, you'll be able to observe and engage with the farm's cattle when they come by. Inside, you can disconnect and unwind, with luxury amenities. The dwelling is completely unique and provides a very special feeling while living in the trees.
The space
Upon arrival, you'll enter the property through a single farm gate and wind down the gravel driveway, across the cattle guard and into the private yard. There is room for 2 cars to park if necessary, however the treehouse is designed for 2 people. It's best to park inside the fenced yard so cows don't rub on your vehicle. Please respect the neighbouring properties and do not cross any fences.
Inside the yard, there is lots of space for bocce, campfires, soaking in the hot tub, or just taking in the scenery. The space is fully surrounded by pasture, where you can observe the various animals and enjoy the complete absence of roads and buildings. Along the fence is the feeding station where you can treat the cows to grain and get an up-close experience with the resident Highlanders. They are friendly, curious animals, with a ton of beneficial traits. You'll hear Ruth's bell jingling as they make their rounds. (Pro Tip: they love sliced apples).
As you walk down and across the stone steps towards the treehouse you will find a steel bridge heading to the front door. You will enter your personalized code (that we'll provide you a day before) into the smart-lock for a streamline private check in.
Inside you will find a modern custom kitchen with (most of) what any kitchen needs. Pots, pans, cutlery, dishes and basic utensils are all in there for your use. Because it’s small, it doesn't have everything a big kitchen might have, so try to think simple for meal plans. It is also equipped with: a small fridge, toaster, induction cooktop, dish rack, French Press, kettle, salt/pepper/oil and spices.
Past the kitchen is a couch and little collection of books. The couch could sleep a child but the building was designed and built for just a couple. If you do wish to bring your kids, please let us know right away so we can make sure to supply extra bedding. The additional cost is $45 per night / per child, but again, the space is compact! Across from the book nook is a table and bench where you can eat, read, work, or play games.
Out the back of the building is a deck where you're likely to enjoy the best morning coffee (or cocktail...) of your life. It's elevation is great for stargazing at night and the cows and deer are often wandering by below. The deck is almost 30 feet above the field so it's important to be very careful out there - another really epic but not-kid-friendly feature.
Back inside there is a tilting ladder that you climb up to the sleeping loft. Please make sure you lean forward while climbing up. If you have trouble with ladders or are claustrophobic, sadly, this dwelling won't be enjoyable for you. Up in the loft is an ultra comfy mattress and silky smooth bamboo sheets. You'll be looking up at the stars and branches through the pair of skylights overhead (you might want to bring a sleep mask if you need it to be dark in the morning!). We have a TV and Treehouse wifi for the ultimate Netflix and Chill experience.
There is a bath room with an actual flush toilet and a large tiled shower which is quite rare for a treehouse or tiny home, but super convenient. We also provide you with shampoo, conditioner, artisan soaps and towels. Again, everything inside the treehouse is quite compact so please be prepared for tight quarters and simple living.
Our number one goal is to provide a memorable and relaxing stay, that helps guests disconnect from the stresses of everyday life, and experience the peaceful, agrarian lifestyle. Our second goal, is to do so without disrupting neighbours, the environment, and the animals. Please respect the land and help us continue to be able to share it with others.
Guest access
Guests will have access to all of the fenced-in yard which includes their own private hot tub, fire pit, lawn and parking area. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SNOW TIRES ON IN THE WINTER, as we get more snow up here than on the valley floor. Please close gates behind you so the cows don't get out!
Other things to note
Skoghus is situated on a specialty cattle farm, where Scottish Highland cows are raised. They will not be in your space during your stay, but they do graze in the pasture all around it so don't be surprised if you come across "cow-pies" on the way in. They are friendly and docile animals, but they tend to swing their heads around and they have long horns. Please only engage with them through the fence - do not climb any fences.
There is a nice campfire pit that is available for use, but only when there is no fire ban in effect. Please check online during your stay to make sure it is safe and legal to have a campfire. Don't forget to bring firewood with you!
When the ban is on, we do provide a propane fire pit but you will need to bring your own propane bottle.
Please enjoy the hot tub but only use the plastic glasses that we provide for out there. Please always make sure to secure the lid back on after you're done.
In the winter months, its important you have snow tires on your vehicle, as the driveway is long and the snow comes a little more often up here.
