Are you seeking a true escape - a place to disconnect, unwind, and recharge? Nestled on 50 secluded acres in the Ozark Mountains, the Moonshack is a solar-powered, off-grid cabin surrounded by National Forest! A spring runs by the cabin, flowing down to a charming dam and waterwheel, filling the air with soothing sounds of nature! Many guests come here to completely unplug and leave the world behind, spending days immersed in peace. We invite you to find your own sanctuary at the Moonshack.

The space
We built the Moonshack ourselves during the pandemic! What began as a safe haven for our family has now become a special retreat for you too. We even documented the build—search “Moonshack” on YouTube to check it out!

The name comes from a mix of Moonshine (our spring ran a Moonshine Still in the early 1900s) and the rustic shack-like design of the cabin. This 800 sqft off-grid cabin by the spring is a dream brought to life. The spring runs constantly, and its soothing sounds make it hard to leave.

Crafted mostly from recycled materials from an old family barn, the cabin is fully off-grid with renewable energy (see “Solar/Generator Use” in Other Notes). You’ll enjoy modern comforts like a flushing toilet, outdoor shower, air conditioning, a 1920s propane cook stove, a clawfoot tub, and hammocks indoors and out.

The interior combines mid-century and rustic vibes. The loft has 3 twin beds and a futon, plus a kids’ living area and an adult living area. The main bedroom features a queen bed and dresser, and the open living space is inviting for relaxing together.

Explore our on-property hiking trails, or bring your own ATV or mountain bike for adventure nearby. Between the cozy hammocks, soothing spring, and nature all around, the Moonshack is a truly unique off-grid escape.

Guest access
We highly recommend an AWD or 4x4 vehicle year round!! We have a steep spot that 2nd autos struggle with. Our you can park above the steep spot and walk the 1/4 mile to the cabin.

Our property is surrounded by the Mark Twain National Forest on three sides, offering plenty of space to explore. Feel free to enjoy our 50 acres and hiking trails, but bring tick spray and sturdy hiking shoes.

The road to the cabin is private, with signs at the entrance to guide you. In winter, please consider snow and ice conditions and plan for a 4x4 or AWD vehicle.

Other things to note
Solar / Generator

Our cabin runs on solar panels, giving you a true renewable energy experience. You don’t need to do anything—just enjoy! Depending on sunlight and power usage, the backup generator may be needed. It’s quiet and easy to start with a push button. A battery monitor inside the cabin shows current levels and whether the generator should be turned on. In summer, if you use the AC, the generator may run more often. Extra gas is provided if needed.

Pet Rules
• No pets on furniture, inside or outside.
• Pets are not allowed at the spring head (it’s roped off).
• Pets may get wet on the property, but no wet pets inside—please dry them off outside first.
• Bring your own pet beds and towels; do not use cabin blankets or towels.
• Pets may not be bathed in the clawfoot tub.
• Please dispose of pet waste in the woods.

Path to the Cabin

The path is dirt, short, and a bit steep or uneven in spots. We’ve installed a rope for safety where needed, and the path is beautifully lit at night. Photos are posted so you can see what to expect.

Hi friends! We are Michael and Laine Loftis! In 2018 we sold everything and traveled & lived fulltime in an RV with our 4 kids. With our home base in Missouri, we dreamed up a plan to build the Moonshack! We documented the build on YT @ Loftispartyofsix. Then another dream formed to build the Glade Top Fire Tower and Smoke & Mirrors!! We no longer live in an RV but still love to travel. We hope you enjoy our Unique properties in the Ozark Mountains!!
