The Space

Hidden deep in a secluded mountain cove in the Pisgah National Forest, 35 minutes north of Asheville, North Carolina, Mountain Light Sanctuary is a magical gateway into the world of nature. Bordered by two cascading creeks and ringed by the highest mountains in the eastern USA, it holds an energy and an ambiance which are nothing short of magical.

Mountain Light Sanctuary is a gateway between the human world of "busy" and "doing" and the natural world of harmony and "being." It is your base camp for exploring hundreds of miles of trails meandering through the half million acres of National Forest, or inner explorations from your own special spot under an ancient hemlock, on a mossy rock amid the ferns, or in a secluded grotto beside the creek. • I was unablel to stay at the Mountain Light Sanctuary the night of my reservation. However, I would like to share a bit of what I learned about the Sanctuary and Michael the owner. Michael is genuine and wants his guests to achieve their lodging goals and experiences. The Sanctuary has natural and lovely accommodations varying in comfort vs nature. What ever the nature seeker is looking for, they will surely find it at the Mountain Light Sanctuary.
I highly recommend an adventure into the Pisqah Forest

Welcome To Mountain Light Sanctuary I am Michael Lightweaver, your host. My goal is to see that you have a pleasant and comfortable visit. I have traveled a good deal around the planet and the Sanctuary is the closest thing to Shangri-La that I have discovered. In fact, when I first found it, through a set of synchronicities, I knew I had discovered the end of my rainbow here in the high mountains of western North Carolina My personal story, this time around, began in a small town in southern Kentucky, where I was born, blessed with a great family, and did my initial university work. From there I went to Nashville, Tennessee, to finish my BA & MA degrees, married and raised a very fine family of four children and now six grandchildren. In 1992, having completed primary family responsibilities, I moved to Asheville, knowing in the deepest part of my soul that my real home was in these mountains. I love people but the siren call of the mountains and forest had touched my Elfin and Native American soul. From my earliest memories I was seeing the world a bit differently than my peers. For one thing, I had a global perspective that was not limited by national, religious or ethnic boundaries. Narrow mindedness of any flavor wasn’t my cup of tea. Over the course of the years I have walked many paths, both professionally and spiritually. Most of my professional work has been in some area of service; community organizing, director of a nonprofit agency, owner of an international tour company, organizer of holistic festivals, clinical hypnotherapist, counselor, and workshop leader in the areas of creativity, brain dominance, stress management, dreamwork, etc. My spiritual path began in the small town Methodist church and continued on in college with my involvement with the Society of Friends (Quakers). Years later I discovered my Native American as well as my Celtic spiritual roots which helped to reconnect me with the spirit of nature. My philosophical bent also drew me to studying Taoism, Buddhism and other Eastern philosophies. I have gain a great deal from many sources but ultimately have found that the human heart is the true temple of Divine Presence and love is the highest expression of that Presence which can best be accessed directly through inner guidance. Yes, we are a spiritual retreat center. Here's what that means: We delight in the beautiful variety of flowers and animal life we have here at the Sanctuary. We also delight in the beauty of diversity in the human family and the human experience. This diversity lends a rich depth of experience to our common journey. For this reason, we welcome all people who are peaceful & respectful of others, regardless of religion, race, national origin, politics, sexual orientation or whatever.... Our spiritual perspective is a reflection of this celebration of diversity. It is very simply the path of the heart reflected in love and compassion, in whatever form that may take at any given moment. It has been our experience that the mind divides while the heart unites. The mind, devoted as it is to ideas & beliefs, is constantly analyzing, dissecting and formulating philosophies, dogmas and practices and defending them, often with vehemence. The heart, on the other hand, doesn't think or believe. It feels. It feels that which is of Love and that which is not of Love. When we step beyond the mind and belief and into the heart we experience the true nature of Divine Presence as Love. We honor the human need to believe and to reach out (or inward) to Divine Presence through various forms & practices. But we know that when the Essence is reached, regardless of the method or path, it will be known as Love. Because we are of the Divine - of Love - our True Nature is innocence. We do not honor guilt, blame, judgment or condemnation, for our True Nature is innocence. At the personality level, the level of our daily drama, we acknowledge failure, weakness, mistakes, the human struggle - even the appearance of that which we call evil. But we know that these are just a part of our drama; just where we are at the personality level at any given moment in time, and not our fundamental nature. The purpose of Mountain Light Sanctuary is to provide you with a place to rediscover and reconnect with your essential nature, with your original innocence, with Divine Presence, and with Love. Life at the Sanctuary is simple but it is also a dream fulfilled. We heat with wood, our water comes from a spring on the mountain. We have no television and cell phones don't work here. And since I moved here in 1995, I have been sleeping outdoors, year round. It's an Elfin thing. Actually it is a very nice bedroom with a big four poster bed, polished wooden floors, an oriental carpet, and pictures on the wall -- all three of them. OK, so there is only three walls. The fourth is open to the deck so sometimes I do have leaves, rain or snow blowing into my bedroom and a family of house wrens who share the room with me are flying in and out daily. But the view of the mountains and the constant sound of the cascading creek is worth an occasional cold nose on a January night. In addition to hosting the many interesting guests from all over the world who find their way to the Sanctuary, I am also the founder and director of the International Institute For Global Leadership, a free internet based project which provides a curriculum in consciousness designed to assist our students in becoming consciously aware, high-integrity and heart-centered leaders in their communities and the world. ((website hidden)). We currently have over 100 students from 30 countries so when I’m not working outside, I’m usually at my laptop.
