Gorgeous country retreat between Burlington and Middlebury. A "dimensionally transcendental" space (bigger on the inside!) built as an artist's studio, located in a meadow bordered by woods and a wide creek on 22 acres, gorgeous in all seasons. One large, 2-story room with two double beds: a bed on the main floor with a plush new mattress, and a comfy futon on the sleeping loft. There's a well-equipped new kitchen perfect for making romantic dinners, a full bath with a claw-foot (email hidden) player, wireless internet, and a land line. As you can see from the reviews, it's a very special place, intimate in size but expansive in feel, because of the cathedral ceiling and wall of windows with a view onto the meadow, creek, and sunset. It's a beautiful artistic/rustic interior, quirky, but with a moderately high level of comfort. Perfect for an active vacation, a romantic get-away, or a creative, spiritual, or rejuvenating retreat.
The surrounding 22 acres of land are gorgeous in all seasons. There's great snowshoeing and cross-country skiing right outside. In the warm season, hang out in the outdoor living room nestled in a White Pine woods right outside the back door or swim in the creek that borders the woods. Walk .03 mile along the road pictured above and play in the waterfall or sun on the rocks near the covered bridge. A few miles away are Lake Champlain, hiking trails, and swimming holes. Explore Burlington, Middlebury, Vergennes, and Shelburne, and try their great restaurants, museums, and shopping, all within a half hour's drive. And don't miss the famous flatbread pizza served one night a week in winter and two in summer at Pizza on Earth, on a lovely farm 5 miles away, with a stop on the way to pick up beer or the perfect bottle of wine at Spear's country store. There's lots to see and do, but you might want to snuggle in and stay put.
Provided are linens, blankets, towels, and both feather and foam pillows, a travel hair dryer, shelves and drawers for your clothes. Also Scrabble and Backgammon.
Take a look at the reviews and see if it's the place for you: it is the country and there is the chance of encountering a mouse, spiders, crickets, and even fireflies inside. (Early September '13 PestPro was in for mice). The bathtub has a hand-held shower and is on a platform so if you're over 5'7" it's best to sit down.
Nightly price includes 9% VT hotel tax. No breakfast offered, but the kitchen is stocked with cooking basics.

We had the best time here. Such a perfect spot nestled in the snowy scenery. We're already planning on coming back in the summer!
We had the most wonderful romantic time at Janie's cottage! It was the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Total relaxation and privacy! Beautiful scenery and so much to discover outdoors. My boyfriend even proposed to me during a day-trip to Montreal which we were close enough to take a bus from Burlington. Wonderful place to read, relax, sleep and eat! We would love to go back during another time of year to experience the wonderful lake and trees. Thank you, Janie for an amazing time!

Oh my goodness. Janie's cabin is absolutely the perfect place for a peaceful, happy retreat. My husband and I went during the winter and we were surprised how warm and inviting the place really is. It's a dream spot where you can cook dinners, go for a leisurely stroll down to the river, and drink wine late into the evening. The best part in my opinion? The claw foot bathtub. A serene place with wonderful energy. Thank you Janie for being so lovely!
Janie's house was a dream! She was very easy to communicate with and we have really enjoyed her place.
I would definitely recommend it.
Janie has the ideal set up for a beautiful, serene getaway. My boyfriend and I live just 30 minutes away, but we felt like we were in another world - exploring the woods and creek, and holed up in her cozy cottage. It's magical.
Dominic and I had a good and quiet time at Janie's cottage. The kitchen is perfect for those who love cooking. The communication was really easy and we had all the information necessary for our trip. I would recommend the cottage anytime.
What a wonderful place to spend the weekend! After losing power for almost a week following Hurricane Sandy, Janie was kind enough to offer her place to us for an extra night. Getting out of the cold, dark house was great, but staying in such a cozy and realxing space made it even better. It was a great weekend getaway for my family of 4- we all loved the space and were able to relax, cook up some wonderful meals, and we were even inspired to spend a night painting with some supplies we got at a local craft store. I am looking forward to my next trip to this cozy retreat at some point in the near future. Thanks again Janie!
A lovely, lovely space built by an artist. We would definitely come here again. Good bed, simple kitchen, good radio for classicall music, quiet, spacious: the perfect place to unwind.
The location of Janie's place is Heaven on Earth. If you are looking for a peaceful place to take day trips, to experience fall foliage, to just be, this the place. Great kitchen, very good communication with Janie, a special piece of Vermont. Went to Sunday supper at Shelburne Farms, apple picking at Shelburne Orchards, walks to covered bridge and all around. Living among the trees, stream, and off the grid was a fabulous opportunity for us to experience a different lifestyle.
Like Louis, we wish we could give this a higher rating, but it's a mixed review. Pros - The location (btwn Burlington, Vergennes, Middlebury, Bristol, etc.) is great. The setting is beautiful. Janie is easy to communicate with. The location is very quiet. Cons - There is no light over the back door. Because the back door is falling apart, it is really hard to open and close. The house is VERY dusty. There was a coating of dust on all of the not-used-frequently surfaces. My husband is mildly allergic to dust and had to take medicine during our entire 7 day stay so as to be able to breathe. There is only a bath tub with a flexible hand-held hose extension. The tub is raised off the floor and only has about 5' 6" of headroom. This makes it difficult / impossible (depending on your height) to stand while taking a shower. Also, the shower curtain does not go all the way around the tub so, if you stand to shower, the walls and floor (which are wood) get wet. There is a note stating that the VERY small refrigerator "runs cold". In fact, half of our 7 days worth of groceries froze. (The shells of our eggs cracked) There is a note stating that there is mouse problem and that food should be stored in either the refrigerator or the storage box. We did this. We were also very careful to wash ALL of the dishes, stove, counters, etc. after every meal so as to discourage the mice. However, every morning, there was mouse poop on the clean dishes on the counter. There are 4 shelves and 2 drawers for clothes. There is no place to hang clothes and no hangers. We stayed for 7 days. The space for our clothes was insufficient. We were here for a wedding and needed to be able to hang clothes. Like Louis, we had a nice vacation but we've stayed in better places for comparable money, and some of these issues could be so easily addressed.
