Gorgeous country retreat between Burlington and Middlebury. A "dimensionally transcendental" space (bigger on the inside!) built as an artist's studio, located in a meadow bordered by woods and a wide creek on 22 acres, gorgeous in all seasons.

The Space

One large, 2-story room with two double beds: a bed on the main floor with a plush new mattress, and a comfy futon on the sleeping loft. There's a well-equipped new kitchen perfect for making romantic dinners, a full bath with a claw-foot tub, a radio & CD player, wireless internet, and a land line. As you can see from the reviews, it's a very special place, intimate in size but expansive in feel, because of the cathedral ceiling and wall of windows with a view onto the meadow, creek, and sunset. It's a beautiful artistic/rustic interior, quirky, but with a moderately high level of comfort. Perfect for an active vacation, a romantic get-away, or a creative, spiritual, or rejuvenating retreat.

Provided are linens, blankets, towels, and both feather and foam pillows, a travel hair dryer, shelves and drawers for your clothes. Also Scrabble and Backgammon. And a lot of information on local attractions.

Take a look at the reviews and see if it's the place for you: it is the country and there is the chance of encountering a mouse, spiders, crickets, and even fireflies inside. The bathtub has a hand-held shower and is on a platform so if you're over 5'7" it's best to sit down. It has a new shower head (May 2014) with 5 settings and strong water pressure.

Nightly price includes 9% VT hotel tax. No breakfast offered, but the kitchen is stocked with cooking basics.

Guest Access

The surrounding 22 acres of land are gorgeous in all seasons. There's great snowshoeing and cross-country skiing right outside. In the warm season, hang out in the outdoor living room nestled in a White Pine woods right outside the back door or swim in the creek that borders the woods. Walk .03 mile along the road pictured above and play in the waterfall or sun on the rocks near the covered bridge. A few miles away are Lake Champlain, hiking trails, and swimming holes. Explore Burlington, Middlebury, Vergennes, and Shelburne, and try their great restaurants, museums, and shopping, all within a half hour's drive. And don't miss the famous flatbread pizza served one night a week in winter and two in summer at Pizza on Earth, on a lovely farm 5 miles away, with a stop on the way to pick up beer or the perfect bottle of wine at Spear's country store. There's lots to see and do, but you might want to snuggle in and stay put.

Interaction with Guests

I am always available by text or cell. I am generally not on site when the cabin is rented, but I respond quickly to any questions during the visit. I enjoy communicating with guests!

The Neighborhood

Great natural beauty with an intimate scale. Covered bridges, rolling hills, swimming holes, x-country ski trails, fresh eggs for sale across the road. The neighborhood accessible by car also has cafés, restaurants, bakeries, markets, hardware, yoga . . . pretty much anything you'll need.

Check In
  • My boyfriend and I stayed in Little Roscoe House for 4th of July weekend. The house was everything we hoped for and more--a quiet, calming retreat in the country, still close enough to drive to food and fun in Burlington or other nearby towns. The house was bigger than we expected, the setting is truly picturesque, and we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The house is somewhat rustic--handmade furniture, minimalist bathroom--but that only added to the charm for us. Janie had thought everything through, and was so kind and easy to communicate with. We're looking forward to returning to Janie's house the next time we're in Vermont!

  • Lovely little place. Janie takes care to have the amenities you need to feel at home (pepper mill, olive oil, nice towels, coffee grinder), etc. Decor both eclectic and rustic; bed was comfortable. Fireflies put on an incredible display at night!!

  • Janie's country retreat is a cool unique little shack in the woods. It wasn't exactly what my wife and I were going for on our trip, but it would be great for others that can appreciate the unique art displayed inside, and the simplicity that this rental has to offer. It is an open concept studio with a rustic meets artistic decor. The bathroom has a claw foot tub but the walls are unfinished and lighting is minimal. This rental would be a great fit for anyone seeking seclusion but still wants to be a short and beautiful 30 minute drive from downtown Burlington.

  • Janie was very pleasant and easy to communicate with, she answered quickly to all our questions. The site is magnificent, peaceful, and the house has a unique charm. It's a perfect spot for those looking for a quiet place.

  • The cottage is really fun. Its all one good size room (apart from the cute little bathroom) but we never felt crowded. There's no television, but when you're in such beautiful setting, you don't need one. We used the place to explore Middlebury and Burlington, both 20-30 minutes away, but nice drives. Didn't get a cell reception while there, but the wifi really helped keep in communication and make plans. Great place!

  • Janie's place is beautiful! We loved her eclectic collection of art. The surroundings are very green and picturesque, and we wished we could spend more time outside but it was unfortunately a little wet during our visit. Lots of fun things to do around the area - we went to the farm and spent some time exploring nearby towns. Janie was very responsive and easy to communicate with! Thank you!

  • This tucked away spot could not be more ideal. The space itself is beautiful in its simplicity, the creek is mere steps away, and the country sounds were exactly what I was hoping for during my stay. Thanks to Janie for all the clear communication prior to the trip. This place is a GEM. The location though initially feels far out is really only 20-30 mins from multiple small charming towns including Burlington. Thank you and I hope to be back!

  • What a great remote location!

  • Janie and her cabin are both amazing!! Janie was incredibly responsive, easy to communicate with, and welcoming. The cabin included a thick folder of area hiking, restaurant, and activity recommendations from Janie, as well as clear & concise need-to-know info about our stay. As for the cabin, we thoroughly enjoyed this gem of a retreat. Everywhere we looked, there was a fun and unique piece of art, and the cabin is cozy & comfortable.

Thanks, Janie! We hope to be back!

  • We had a wonderful stay at Janie's place in Charlotte. The house is simple, functional, cozy, and well designed. The property and surrounding area is the real highlight, though. (From whichever way you drive to the property, you cross a covered bridge!) As Janie's ad says, the shower is a tight squeeze and the water pressure is nothing to write home about, but all in all it worked and provided enough after a long day of hiking in nearby Mt. Philo State Park.

Janie was easy to communicate with and provided her number for any questions. Highly recommend.

    Response from Janie:

Thanks Andrew! I'm happy to say that the water pressure in the shower is now resolved. New filter on the pipe and new shower head with five settings. Ready for your next visit!
