If just renting a room, I will likely be here. Parties of 4 or more, I usually stay elsewhere.
Its not a neighborhood; its the forest!

We had a fabulous stay at Barry's place! We arrived to exactly what was presented and could not have been more pleased. Easy access to numerous hiking/mountain biking trails in the Nisene Marks is within 1/2 mi. Kayaking, Surfing and Coastal Hikes all within 30 min. Santa Cruz proper about 10 min. Barry was a great host; extremely responsive; largely unseen. But a great guy to hang out with if the chance presents. This is just one incredible spot for the rate. Great jumping off point to urban or natural infrastructure, but awesome for moderate group size cooking in, relaxing, and catching up.
The weekend was perfect. As I pulled up into the driveway of the house, I was greeted by 3 deer. A great way to start my stay.
There were 10 of us in the house and no body felt crowded.
Barry was helpful getting us set up in the house, making sure we had everything we needed and were comfortable.
I will certainly book here again.
A group 10 guys stayed the night at Barry's place. His place was spacious and clean. Everyone had their own bed...either in one of the bedrooms or the bed in the downstairs "great room" ((Great because the TV was giant, made the playoffs that much better. A pool table and one of two sectionals-a good bed too.).
The upstairs living room was large too with a big sectional that gave two guys their own "bed".
The kitchen and dunning area were perfect for hanging out, multiple "chefs". It made for great community.
The (email hidden)e picture don't do it justice. The area is private. We saw deer all the time. The cats were fun. An all around beautiful area in Aptos.
I will most certainly be back. I've already book my next trip with another group of friends.
Thanks Barry for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
Barry's place was great for our running group to ring in the New Year. Our goal was to spend some of the last hours of 2013 on a beach, which we did, and then we had a lovely morning enjoying coffee and spending time on the beautiful balcony. We also got our first run of 2014 clocked before "checking out". Great location and place for a group. Thanks Barry!!
The site is beautiful, right in the middle of the forest, with deer coming to the yard every day, and birds everywhere. The house is what Barry, our host, said it was: a comfortable home, dated, drafty, but truly charming. Barry was great; very attentive when we needed him, very kind and friendly, and great to talk to. He makes a difference to the place. We were six people, my wife and I and our four adult children. We cooked every day and used the entire house. All of us were happy because we were in a true home environment. The beach is ten minutes away and you can take long hikes right from the house. I highly recommend this place.
This house was great! Plenty of space, and the pool table itself provided plenty of entertainment for our group, and the double fire places kept the place warm and cozy. We were pumped to be surrounded by the great outdoors and plenty of nice trails. The host is also a really awesome and kind guy. Only warning is to check nobody is allergic to cats, because there might be one there :)
Awesome pad with a great view. Very clean
Had a lovely stay at Barry's place in the woods 10 minutes from Santa Cruz. Huge place, so lots of room. Made breakfast in the kitchen. Would love to stay here again! Like a private getaway. Barry was very communicative via email.
Barry's place was yet again the perfect destination for our large group, dubbed "Women's ReTreat Yo-Self 2013." We wined and dined ourselves on his massive porch and enjoyed the beauty of the Nisene Woods, as well as the comfort of the many couches and beds around the place. Barry's laid back hospitality also made the stay yet again a great one. I'll be back for sure!
This was just the place we needed for some R&R in a beautiful setting. The house is lovely and quite big, and slept the 6 of us with no problem. We were able to cook a pretty elaborate meal in the kitchen, use the pellet stove in the living room when it got cool at night, and hang out on the patio in the morning (the patio is most excellent). There is also a pool table downstairs that we did not get to use. We also loved that there were a couple of kitties coming and going while we were there.
We got to meet Barry on the second say we were there -- what a nice guy! If you are looking for a peaceful place to stay in the Santa Cruz area, I highly recommend Barry's place.
