About this listing
Experience a very characteristic area, full of parks and with an active nightlife. All within 3 subway stops from the Coliseum. Our apartment is spacious and full of light. It has very high ceilings and can room up to six people.
The area of Garbatella has been built in the late 1920s/early 1930s drawing inspiration from the garden city movement in the UK, because of this it retains a lot of green areas a distinct architectural feel.
Our apartment is located in one of the historical 'lotti' and allows for a unique experience in one of the few areas of Rome that still offers a homely feel, with old ladies looking out of the windows at their grandchildren who are playing soccer in the court.
The apartment has been recently renovated and is composed of a large living room with a sofa bed and the possibility of adding two more beds and, a master bedroom and the office (that will stay locked). There is also a fully furnished kitchen with a dishwasher and a bathroom with a bath tub.
The apartment has a surface of approximately 900 square feet (85 square meters) and has very high ceilings (over 12 feet/3.8 m)
On the top floor of the building you can enjoy the communal terrace that will provide you with a great place to sip a glass of wine at sunset.
The area offers a great night life: in the radius of a three minute walk there are at least 4 restaurants that are worth the visit, a theatre and an underground club.
The subway is a five minutes walk away and the Coliseum is 3 stops away.
You will have access to the whole apartment except for a small room (our office), which we use for storage when we are away.
Interaction with Guests
Depending on when you arrive, you will be greeted, by either me and my girlfriend or by my brother who lives nearby. We only rent we we're out of town, so chances are it will be my brother, however we very much enjoy meeting our guests over the phone if we can't greet them in person.
Garbatella is one of the few places where you can still experience the 'true' Roman experience: the historic center has become too touristic, and the suburbs are places where people only go to sleep.
Garbatella has a great nightlife, and retains a certain character during the day: you will often hear kids playing soccer in the courtyard during the afternoon and their mothers supervising them from the windows.
Garbatella is also a very interesting experiment in urban planning, we highly recommend getting lost in the gardens between the houses (they are all public gardens, you won't be trespassing).
The subway is a 5-10 minutes walk away. Three stops get you to the Coliseum from there.
The Roma Ostiense train station is 10-15 minutes walking from the apartment, trains to the rest of Italy or to Fiumicino airport leave from there.
Other Things to Note
We have a video-projector you can use if you feel like, just plug it into your laptop!
You can also use the top floor terrace, provided you are respectful of neighbors, since it's a shared space.
Please do not bring any pets. If you really don't want to smoke on the terrace or in the courtyard, please do so at the window.
We rented the apartment for 5 days and it was perfect for us.. Carlos arranged to have his brother checked us in. he showed us the local stores and coffee shops (cappuccino=awesome) ... Great prices.... Not like in Vatican city..... Carlos checked us out and took us to the train station short cut to the airport... Great value, close to train apartment, great host... = great time in Rome... Ty Carlos....
We were stayin at Carlo`s for 4 days in October and we enjoyed our stay a lot! The apartment was really nice and clean and very good-located, with the centre just within a 7mins trip by metro. It was equipped with everything anyone needs for a comfortable stay and a rooftop terrace was a big plus! We loved the area a lot: it was quiet and not touristic at all with several good restaurants near by and a supermarket within a 5 mins walk. There was an amazing bakery/cafeteria on the way from the metro station where they sell this freshly made delicious pastry that was to die for!
Calros`s brother Lorenzo met us at the station and showed us around the neigborhood. He was very friendly and answered every single question we were shooting at him. On our last day we had a late flight but they let us leave our bags in the apartment before we left to the airport. We would definitely recommend staying in this apartment if you need comfort and want to be close to everything and escape crowds of tourists.
From the very start Carlo was quick to answer all my questions -a very friendly chap that I would have loved to share a few drinks with, but unfortunately he was not in Rome at the time of my stay -Carlo, fyi, I left some Belgian beers in your fridge :)
So, communication was excellent -and the apartment was even better. One tiny detail I thought was a pity was that the oven was disconnected, but that was only because I promised a good friend to bake chocolate soufflé, which now was not possible, but that was not really a problem -luckily my friend was very understanding. The apartment itself is really really a good deal: very spacious living room with airco and a nice view, a kitchen with all the stuff that you need to cook your own meals, a long and small bathroom and a nice big bedroom with a comfortable double bed. Everything was nice and clean, and I did not really find fault with anything -I would go there again without hesitating a single second. Carlo's brother Lorenzo, who picked me up at the Garbatella metro stop, was also very kind and, as we were walking towards the apartment on the day of my arrival, he showed me the most interesting places in the neighbourhood -speaking of which, Garbatella really is a nice area -not crowded nor touristic, but you do need to speak Italian, as English will not get you very far. The people are very friendly though, always willing to help.
I think I lost my heart there somewhere ...
Absolutely great spot in a very fascinating side of Rome.
The flat is very spacious, well maintained and well connected to the centre.
I would definitely do it again!
Carlo and his brother Lorenzo were really attentive hosts. Great communication, good tips to explore the area. We actually fell in love with Garbatella. A "normal" neighbourhood which is meant in the most positive sense. No tourists, just nice and friendly Romans. Really good restaurants and bars in direct neighbourhood to the (by the way) spacious appartment. All tourist attractions no more than one metro-station away. Very recommendable!
About the Host, Carlo
my name is Carlo, I'm 31 and I was born and raised in Rome, during the past 4 years I've lived in France and in the US: I basically took my studies as an excuse to live abroad, travel and get to know different people and languages.
After these two years I was feeling very homesick: Rome is a lazy relaxing city, which can be unnerving at times, but where life is so so sweet. The weather is great, the food is awesome and the nights are fun. So I decided to come back and enjoy it and I moved back here with my girlfriend, who is French (almost Belgian).
The thing is: many friends, my in-laws and my employee are all abroad and I end up traveling a lot, so I thought I could sign up here to help pay the rent.
What else…I enjoy reading, music, art, cycling and I'm kind of a geek (did I mention I'm a physicist?). I enjoy Rome's underground scene, but I don't disdain a classical concert from time to time. I'm definitely a foodie and a wine lover.
One thing I enjoy a lot is sharing my city with foreigners and tourists, because it helps me rediscover it every time and fall back in love with it.
